03 Nov 05 - 07:49 AM (#1596330) Subject: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: GUEST,webmaster@efdss.org If anyone out there has a spare moment between 1pm and 6pm today, would you please consider phoning this UK number: 0845 607 1902 (local rate within the UK) Cecil Sharp House is up for a grant from the Big Lottery to make it accessible to disabled people and do a lot more dissemination work of the resources that we have there. Apparently it is a "Restoration" type phone-vote competition, with the winner (we are up against Camberwell School of Arts) getting a grant. I'm aware that a lot of people have issues with the English Folk Dance and Song Society and the politics that have occurred therein - but this vote will be for keeping up the beautiful building that Cecil Sharp, Maud Karpeles and William Kimber laid the foundation stones for, and making it accessible to more people. (I'm also hoping that they'll give me some money to fund my "make the digital archives publicly accessible on the internet" project!) Please help if you can, and ask your family and friends to help as well - we could do some wonderful things with this money... |

Is there any way to vote after the deadline, and will they accept calls from Ireland as being valid? I used to work at C#H and will always have a soft spot for it. I didn't know William Kimber laid a foundation stone - what a magnificent player he was! And I would probably not have heard his music without the Society. It is extremely confusing to follow all the details but a brief summary is that each ITV region is putting up two candidates for funding from the Big Lottery over several nights this week, and every night only one bid can win a grant of up to £50,000. Tonight's contest in the ITV London region is between Camberwell Arts and Cecil Sharp House. On the Big Lottery site some details of the bid can be viewed, but these seem to be very much abbreviated - so that it appears that all the EFDSS intends is to "spend an award of £56,242 to create a sound garden containing naturally powered sound sculptures." I've voted five times so far for the EFDSS, but I'd be much happier if I could see how these funds would be used to improve access to the library. |
