Recording Is A Cakewalk

Subject: Recording Is A Cakewalk
From: Jerry Rasmussen

A while back, I started a thread asking if anyone was using the Cakewalk software for burning CDs. Apparently, no one is. After asking a million dumb questions, I finally decided to take a chance on the software and just installed it last night. This has been a very busy day... did my monthly program at the nursing home, and spent most of the day out of the house. But, tonight I bit the bullet and tried to record a song from a cassette to CD. On one level, that shouldn't have been a big deal because I've done it before on previous software. But, I was excited about the Cakewalk program because it offers quite a bit more controk, not just in editing, but in trimming tracks and making a reasonably professional final product.

Well, tonight, I took a tape of songs I've written but never recorded that I want to put onto a CD (just for my own use) and after a few false steps, I recorded a darned good sounding track onto CD. That was without any editing or fixing of an old tape. I'm very hopeful that I can learn to use Cakewalk, but that it will be an inexpensive way to burn tapes of recordings to CD.

I don't know if there is any interest in hearing more about how I'm progressing on this software, but it is a very inexpensive program to use... cost just $39.95.

Now, all I have to do is figure out how to get to sleep.

All of this is part of the learning curve in preparation for doing a CD of the Gospel Messengers from high quality tape recordings I've made over the last couple of years.

I remember that thread Jerry ... at the time I was looking around for some recording software. I found that using the old Sony reel to reel and an ancient soundboard was not very effective anymore and was unrealiable. I actually settled on a software recording application called Record Producer Deluxe. Now I record digitally and directly into the computer and burn the results onto cd's. I can record multi tracks, and edit. I'm very happy with it and quite surprised with the results.

Hi there,
I am new to this web discussion stuff, but thought that I might try it. Your cakewalk program records tape to c.d...but what about recording straight to c.d? I have used the n-trax (or n-tracks) and you can burn c.d's really easy using it. You can try it for free, it is a virtual studio...very cool. I have had difficulty with synching up tracks, so I mostly do one takers- which takes me all night. --------Montana tunesmith.

That looks great, number6! I'd be interested in hearing more about how easy it is to use. It looks more like a Home Studio. I have a digital 8 track that mixes and burns to a self-contained CD burner. That is, that's what it does if you can figure out how to work the darned thing, I haven't given up on it yet, though, so it made no sense to invest in a computer home studio. If I go that direction, Record Producer Deluxe looks like a good product to check out. I am not particularly adept at figuring out complex equipment, and I find the manual for my Zoom digital recorder very confusing.

Maybe if I get smarter some day?   sigh..........

You can record directly to CD with cakewalk, too, but it looks like it is more limited in that regard than Record Producer Deluxe. But, it you have a tape machine and produce good tapes, Cakewalk appears to be a very easy to use product that does a good job of making CDs.

I recorded my first three albums on tape, and was very happy with their sound. Tape isn't "current" enough now, but it still sounds good to me, with perhaps more warmth to it than the digital recordings.

I'm glad to see some discussion going on here.

I'm pleased you started this thread Jerry. I'm surprised this subject hasn't been posted sooner. I think quite a few catters would be interested in this subject. If we can do our own recordings of decent quality and have them in WAV format we can swap our own music amongst one another.

I tried Cakewalk out after reading your first post ... I found it limited in multi track recording ... I than started surfing the web for other digital recording applications and decided upon Record Producer Deluxe. I'm pleased with the results; good quality from just recording via a mic onto the computer, multi tracking and converting to WAV format. I haven't done extensive editing, but I find it a bit complicated at this point.

I hope this thread inspires more posts on home digital recording. I certainly would like to know more of what's out there.

SiX: Yes, the cakewalk Pyro is not a good choice as a home studio. I wouldn't recommend it for that. But, I have an enormous amount of good music on cassettes and lps that I would like to be able to transfer to CD with some level of control, with simple operation. Cakewalk does that for me. Perhaps after I become more accomplished with it I'd tlry a home studio software... but not the stuff I looked at, which cost $300 and would take an advanced degree in electrical engineering to figure out how to use.

Would either of these programs enable me to transfer from 78 RPM to CD?    LP to CD?

Well, old dumb dumb here didn't check out the threads already written on the subject of transferring from 78s to CD. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh! If I don't find what I need (read: am intelligent enough to do) I'll be back.

DougR....here is a pretty good explanation of the basics of recording from LP or 78 to digital....http://www.shareup.com/dadioh/ He has been refing this 'dandy' system for quite awhile.
