stage monitors

Any recommendations for a set (2) stage monitors for use in a 5 piece Ceilidh band. To be driven by a 100 w amp. Must be portable and compact.

Montarbo make some compact and reasonably-priced monitors at that rating.

Have a look here

We're using one of these, and about to buy another, great sound, plenty of volume (100watt), small, good price.

well worth a look

Two will come in handy to also use as studio monitors - and with a mini mixer you could even use them as a re-enforcement PA (200 watt)

fit on mike stand (ideally low bass drum stand)

forgot to add we're using the powered version (100watt)so we can send a different mix to the monitors than front of house (great if you have monitor sends on your mixer/amp.)

They used to do an unpowered model but can't see it on the site at the moment - lots of others to choose from though.

Like the look of those MA205 boxes. Can you link them up?

Yo, Herge, my man!!! Nice to see you in Barrow a while back.

I have always had major problems with my microvox feeding back with monitors, but I have cured it entirely by having my box taken out of the mix, and buying entry level wireless in-ear monitors, which are far, far better sound quality. What's more, there are two channels, so I can have my own instrument in the foreground, and the main output in the background.

It has improved things wonderfully for me, but I can't help thinking that with one sender station and five headsets, you would achieve much better sound balance (unless, of course, you have a sound engineer on a desk out front)

Herge - yep you can link them XLR/6.3 Jack in and out plus a pair of phono's for background/fill music!

We also have in-ear fold-back (very cheap system £30) that works well with larger line ups that uses one transmitter and as many in-ear receivers that you want although we tend to use 2 transmitters so we can change the mix for different band members

Prefer 205 in pub/noisy venues to give a solid sound on stage and also fills that "sound gap" as well.

Came in handy tonight as we were sub-mixing into another bands house PA, took our mix for the 205 from sub-mixer and balanced to that, then into house PA worked well and gave us more than enough fold back, then used it during the break to play some tracks from our Cd's - loud enough to be heard at the back of a 500 seater hall on just over halfway setting!

We use JBL Control 1's adapted to fit on top of a mic stand. Because you can put them so close to the player, you don't need a lot of volume. They don't have much bass either but that's the last thing you need for a stage monitor. The two speakers and the amp to drive them (a home brew based on the excellent Maplin MosFET amp module) + cables all fit into a small suitcase. They are miles better than the big floor wedges we used before.

I guess they wouldn't be right for some line-ups, but for Fendragon they're ideal: I use one speaker (with mostly me and a bit of recorder in it), our recorder/flute player uses the other (with mostly her in it), and the electric piano and electric fiddle have their own amplifiers.

Used to have a pair of Yorkville powered wedge monitors but had to trade them for other gear. Stupid move, they were great for daisy chaining and creating personal little sweet spots on stage. Because they had XLR and 1/4" inputs they worked great for those nearly unplugged gigs (as a sort of mini p.a.) and as acoustic instrument amps.

A quick look at the catalogue...they're still available in both 50 and 100 watt models.

Peace, Mooh.

Thanks I think I'll go for smaller stand mounted monitors - I'll niss the crash barrier effect of floor monitors when playing in venues without a stage - more than once we have had a dancer ending up on our laps!

Skip - enjoyed the session in Hull - good musicians who made me very welcome. See you in Portaferry?

pps they also fit nicely onto cheapo folding guitar stands if you don't want them on the floor or on mic stand.
