New York City: Cousins & Demoss record "Who Broke the Lock".

The first significant folk recording on disc was cut 11/14/1895

Good question. I'll have a look. Yes, it does seem unlikely.

I don't have any notes on this, I'm afraid. Several sources give first recorded in 1929 by Bryant's Jubilee Quartet, a cylinder.

Found a great reissue, though. Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1891-1922 which gives Who Broke the Lock by Cousins and DeMoss (1898) and a clip. From the cylinder (Looks like a great CD set. With book. Important.)

Maybe this item should be withdrawn temporarily pendi further research.

Great site Abby

Percy Grainger the Australian composer also collected and recorded in Lincolnshire Uk between 1905 -1908 to wax cylinder

I am not sure when discs/with needles came in to fashion and the technology and mass production e.g sound horns I think were used with waxed cylinders too

Boy, if you can't learn it on Mudcat, it's either:
A)Not true, or
B)Not worth knowing. (IMHO)            Tw
