The Topic FC, Bradford:New Venue in 2006

After many years as an important music venue in Bradford, The Melborn is to close in January.

Home of the Topic Folk Club for over 11 years, and a vital part of the Bradford music scene for longer than some care to remember, the pub and landlord 'Brother Eamon' will be missed.

The Topic will of course continue. There is a full programme still to be run at The Melborn up to and including the Topic's Christmas/Farewell Party on 22 December 2005. Artists still to appear at The Melborn include Steve Tilston, Alan Reid and Rob van Sante (from the Battlefield Band), The Duncan McFarlane Acoustic Band, Gerry Cooper, Kevin Loughran and the Holbeck Mummers.

As from January 2005, the club will be based at:

The Cock and Bottle,
93 Barkerend Road,
Bradford BD3 9AA
Tel: 01274 738446

The first formal gig at the Cock and Bottle will be Barry Smith and WestPort on 12th January 2006.

One of the most historic pubs in central Bradford, dating from 1820, the Cock and Bottle has now been taken over by a micro-brewery and boasts 13 real ales at a time!

It has a superb stained glass, etched mirrors and wood-panelled interior, with several different rooms and a number of snugs, as well as the room the club will be using. It is close to the City centre, on several bus routes and quite close to Forster Square train station.

The club has an excellent series of concerts lined up well into 2006 (including old favourites Tom Napper, Tom Bliss, Roy Bailey, Julie Ellison, Vin Garbutt, John Conolly … ) so there's a lot worth getting a good venue for.

Some information on the pub, its attributes and location, can be found via the club's website: www.topic-folk-club.org.uk

Great-it's the Harrogate side of town - I'll be over more often.

It is a number of years since I was last in the Cock & Bottle. It used to be a fine pub before a succession of unsuccessful landlords. I recall playing quiz matches there in the Airedale Quiz League, but cannot recall a room large enough to fit a folk club. Does anyone know what the arrangement will be?

John, not sure what you did with your clicky thing, but here's one that works.... (Won't I look silly if it doesn't!)

Applause for the Ref !!

I keep leaving off the http:// bit - just done one in Julie E's thread so I had better go and check it !

Geoff: I'm planning to call into the Cock and Bottle (or **** and Bottle as some forums insist in calling it - bit like the gig we did in Snicepersonthorpe recently) when we get back from the final spasm of the current tour. Must sample those ales and check the venue out - purely in the name of research you understand.

Anyone else been in the pub since it re-opened?

Actually John - the link you posted was this -
http://www.mudcat.org/www.topic-folk-club.org.uk
It doesn't work because it is trying to find www.topic-folk-club.org.uk inside the Mudcat web site.
Try using the Mudcat Link Maker where it says
Make a link ("blue clicky") below the "message" box.

Hallo.

I just thought I'd step in and contribute. First time on this forum, but I do the Topic's website, which has just been updated with some new pages. There's now a FAQ and also a Venue page, with a bio and some photos of the Cock & Bottle, the new venue.

The place is worth its own folk song, what with a fatal stabbing, an exorcism, a period of being run by Christians followed by three years of abandonment and then a glorious rebirth - and that's only the last ten years. It's one of Bradford's oldest pubs, built 1820 on or near the site of a previous inn, and is one of 250 pubs in Britain CAMRA classed as being of special historic interest. Now it belongs to local small brewer William Greenwood (it's their only pub) who aim to start brewing on the premises again.

If it gets too popular the club room might get a tad crowded - there were 50 or so in last night (for Tom Napper Tom Bliss) and that was pretty full (with the tables and chairs and everything). There's no bar in the room but it is only about 20 feet away, and there are 13 real ales.

The move has gone very well and audience figures, as far as one can judge, are possibly 50% up on what they would have been at the old venue. Still, there have only been 4 club nights so far... maybe the novelty will wear off...
