The End of the World

Check it out - it's so stupid it gave me a laugh! (it's a flash animation, takes a few seconds to load)

Takes the mind off all the SNOW we're being blessed with here in Ontario, for a little while anyway...

Maybe all that snow IS the end of the world...

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

but probably not...surely they would'nt make us plow & shovel it first!

Well, the national stereotypes (American, Chinese, French, English, Russian, Australian) were typical, but amusing. How come we did not get to see a stereotypical Israeli, Indian, or Pakistani, though? They have nukes too. Or is it considered too politically sensitive to stereotype them?

Yeah, probably... ;-) You can't say "boo" about certain people these days without raising a whole lot of shit and wishing you hadn't. Not even if you are a comedian. There are a lot of "hurting" people out there...people who have suffered or at least have heard of someone like them who did at some time in the past!!! DON'T make any jokes about them. Not one. Lennie Bruce would be in deep shit if he was alive now, that's what I'm guessing.

With so much manufacturing being done in the Third World, the only thing most people in the west can make is trouble.

O.K so the End of the world will come for us all at some time but don't always believe what you hear from others:- The following song is sung to the tune of "The Lincolnshire Poacher"

I was shopping in the High Street,
When a man came passing by.
He handed me a leaflet,
Which said "The end is nigh".
It was terribly convincing,
I was sure it must be right.
It even specified the date,
And gave the time of night.

This meant of course my shopping list,
Was suddenly all wrong.
A months supply of anything,
Was twenty days too long.
I wouldn't need the batteries,
To put in all my clocks.
And when I bought detergent,
Only chose the smallest box.

In fact there was no point
In doing washing after that.
Likewise I cared no more about
The thoughts of getting fat.
Instead I just ate sweets
And stuffed on curries like a pig.
And the time appointed found me
Smelly, bored, depressed and big.

But when the time appointed came,
Life went on as before.
Except I'd cleared my bank account,
And weighed a whole stone more.
So now I spend my weekends,
On the treadmill at the gym.
And if I see that man again,
The end will come for him.

Best wishes, Mike.

It seems humor has gone way downhill since then.

I will have to watch this later; takes too long to load.

In the mean time, didn't we discuss ten possible "end of civilisation" scenarios here some time back? I searched for the thread using several different words, and nothing came up. Anyone remember? There were ten BIG thinkers who each gave their best guess for how it would all end.

The world of each ego ends when its body-mind dies. People just can't accept the fact that the world goes on without them (their body-mind, I mean). Thus, they are quite attracted to scenarios that suggest we will all go out together at one time! It's much more satisfying, specially when it suggests that all the "bad" people whom you don't like will be punished somehow.

Now, where did Jesus ever say that after his death there would be a bunch of books written about him, those combined with the old Hebrew books, and that the resulting book (the Bible) would tell you all you need to know about everything?

He didn't.

I believe in Jesus and what he stood for and what he did. That doesn't mean I have to believe implicitly in every word in the Bible. Not in the least. It was not written BY Jesus.

It was recently estimated by one author that 44% of the American electorate have a medium to high expectation that Jesus will come down to Earth and gather his church and lift them up to heaven WITHIN THEIR LIFETIMES.

This makes for pretty irresponsible citizenship, seems to me.

Well, and so have generations of Christians for a couple of thousand years now. From reading and believing in a literal interpretation of the Bible (certain parts of it)...or from taking some preacher's word for it. So far, they've all been mistaken. It did not happen in any of their lifetimes. Why would it be any different now?

I guess it's like the saying that "even a stopped clock is right twice a day"....someday ONE of those predictions is gonna be right. Maybe 14,000,000,000 years from now

A stopped clock is right....for one infinitesimally tiny moment...or is it? That moment may in fact be so small that it effectively exists only as a mental concept. The only thing that is certain is change.

The end of the world must be at least a few decades away. If it's not, then all the whining and moaning about Bush won't get finished in time, and we can't have that...

Egyptian/American? Interesting, Jenny! The guy who used to cut my hair spoke like that too. Made for quite the lyrical small-talk, and he was a talented stylist too -- but of no glaringly obvious ethnicity.

Well, except that he's gay, I guess. So cute too, arrgghhh --- what a waste!

WHen you think about it, the world as we know it ends every microsecond; the dynamic flux of change is much broader and faster than our knowing of it can usually keep up.   Guess we better get used to it, huh?
