18 Nov 05 - 07:18 AM (#1608027) Subject: Unkown Favourites From: GUEST,Dazbo Every so often we get a thread about favourite this or favourite that so I thought I'd start a new thread but with a difference (I hope). Usually we get broadly the same names come out each time. This time, however, I propose that we list artists who, whilst not necessarily on our all-time favourite list deserve to have their work brought to a wider audience. These may be new artists just starting out, re-discovered recordings from long ago, recordings you've picked up on your travels or just deserving of some publicity. Rather than just give a name it would be nice if you could supply a brief description and any other info you have or want to divulge! I'll start with Tre Martelli: A band founded in 1977 and come from the Piemont region of Italy. They play traditional and self penned songs and dance music from or based on Piemont played on tradition instruments including melodeons, fiddle, bass, hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes. Still going after a recent brief hiatus. Tarducci: I don't know if they're still active as a group but they were a trio from Holland playing traditional and self penned tunes from Europe and further afield on guitar, melodeon and fiddle. The Devil's Interval: a young English trio singing mainly traditional songs and accompanying themselves on various instruments. Loved their concert at Towersey festival this year. Daniele Seppe: I recently got a CD of his from Italy where he took tunes and songs from southern Italy and melded them to newer sounds. It took me a while to get into this CD but it has some great stuff on it (sorry, can't remember the name). So have you any hidden gems you'd care to share? Darren |

Another Portuguese act I recommend is one that is extremely well known now but still not as widely as she deserves, and she is called Marisa, she sings Fado, and is almost as good as the legendary Amalia Rodriguez. The man writes with a clear eye and some of those songs will/should become classics, songs like 'Mr. Basketball Shoes', 'Brand New Jesus (Right Wing Man)', 'Jesus Loves Me (More than He loves you)', 'Earth and the Sky' (Nothing lasts forever but the Earth and the Sky), 'Raven with a Broken Wing'... He has written some amazing songs, two of which have become part of the folk tradition, "Song for Gale" for Gale Huntington of Martha's Vineyard who collected and preserved a great number of seamen's songs, and "Old Zeb" about Zebulon Northrup Tilton, a fascinating individual who sailed the Alice B. Wentworth along the northeast coast the first third of the last century. Larry is a pediatrician and a gentle soul who almost never actually performs, but many of his songs are wonderful. |

He works out of Minnesota, when he stays in one place for any period of time. There have been long stretches when he has just livead on the road in his car, or wherever anyone would put him up. He's never lost his love of street singing and is one of the most unaffected humans I've ever known. I met him when we shared a couple of workshops at the North Country Folk Festival in the northern penninsual of Michigan many years ago, and we immediately realized that we were long lost brothers. As far as I know, none of his albums are available on CD. If they are, man, I want them! Because Jerry is constantly on the move, I keep losing track of him. Sometimes I'll get a lead and write to an address or call a phone number, only to find that he's already moved on. Hopefully, I'll catch him someday when he stops for a moment to catch his breath. They are born American with a foot imbedded in their Scottish ancestral tradition - with a modern twist, of course. Take your choice of any one of their five or six CD's, but "Scotland Owns Me" is one of my favorite disc's. In another vein there is also a wonderful country/folk/rock group out of the Taos, New Mexico area called - South By Southwest. Beautiful vocal harmonies and fine instrumental work. Michael Hearne, who toured for many years with Michael Martin Murphy, is the heart of this group. Michael hails originally from Texas and is a nephew (I believe) of Bill and Bonnie Hearne - a fine ole Texas pair. Cheers. |

I shared the bill with them at the North East Louisiana Celtic festival back in October. They have a new edition to the band - Dudley's brother, John, who was with them in Charmer (a forerunner to SF). John plays bass and with those beautiful voices the bottom is now rounded out and they sound better than ever. They are wonderful people, very outstanding musicians, and dear friends. I'll second the recommendation of Alaska Mike too. These people are no secret to us Mudcatters though. The singer I would most like to experience up close again is Bill Boazman. He has a voice made for story telling, his guitar playing is fluent and supportive and he is one of the most inspired songwriters I have ever seen and heard. You may hear Johnny Coppin or Paul Downes singing "The Worm Forgives The Plough", but no one else, quite rightly, has the nerve to attempt his haunting "Bless These Children". I am quite baffled as to why it is not one of the most famous songs in the world. |

Let's start with Lis Harvey, who is not only a fine performer and songwriter, but holds the official world's record for the most gigs worked in the shortest period of time (see her website for details). Aaron Nathans is someone that I've mentioned a few times before. He finally has a Cd out which is called "Same Old You". The title track alone is worth the price. It's a very funny hora about a childhood friend. There's plenty to like on the disc. If that doesn't grab you, you'll love "Old People's Fruit" which uses the aquisition of a taste for grapefruit as a metphor for maturity. I could keep this list going for days. I'll post some more later. For the moment, I'll end with Hayward Williams whom I met this past Friday night. He, Bennett Cooke (whom I'll cover in a future post), and were doing the monthly Song Swap at Cafe' Carpe' in Fort Atkinsin, WI. just about the time that you think that you know where one of his songs is going, melodically or lyrically, he'll surprise you. He's a very good songwriter for his age (23), a good singer, and one heck of a guitar player. more later. Stephen Lee |

He's a wonderfully witty and compelling songwriter and excellent folk and blues guitarist with a very soulful baritone voice. Among my favorites of his are "Jesus Don't Mind" (" ... Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, he's nobody's fool. He could send ya to hell, but he loves ya too well -- Don't ya think that's incredibly cool!? ... ) and "Old Mr. Grey" (a rival of "the Blues"). He collaborates a lot with other NW talent, such as Rebecca Cohen on backup vocals and electric bass. His style is eclectic, with some songs kind of country, others more folky, and others primarily blues. If you get a chance to hear him, you really should. Genie |

Hello, I attended a workshop with James Keelaghan, Eric Bogle, Lennie Gallant and Jim Hanlon a few years back at the Stan Rogers festival. Hanlon wasn't as polished a performer but sure held his own with his songwriting. Matt Andersen may not be classed as a folk artist but he's making his way around the folk festivals in spite of that. Fantastic vocals and very funny with it. Some self penned stuff is great " The Cheshire Set" in particular, a song up the upper clases. Another realy good composition is " Cry of The World" about the denial of ones effect on the envirnoment. And at this time of the year they do a tranlated version of Gaudete which is SO apt. |

Besides her Ozark region songs, she has branched out and is writing songs about teaching (available on Amazon and CD Baby). These she uses in her motivational programs for teachers' meetings and conventions. Great voice, great guitar, and a great sense of humor in her presentations. |

I happened to run across this thread just now and although it is old, good people are considering the depth of this topic and it is a good one to think about. One correction though.....I've always performed and still do, more so especially lately.I wish I knew where the rumor started that I barely ever do concerts, because it has hurt my musical career somewhat.People actually believe those things. Anyway Please come and see me sing that some of those and other new songs at the Working Waterfront Festival this weekend in New Bedford,Mass. My website is Larrykaplanmusic.com.Its a great festival. The Rockland concert was especially fun because Nick Apollonio sat in with me and he is just a master of lyrical accompaniment not to mention being in my opinion one of the best if not the best luthiers around. The Sail,Power, and Steam Museum is making huge contributions to the area--almost becoming a folklore and folksinger center. Jim Sharp has done a great job building it. I will be back next year. My family Maine roots go back four generations and someday I will able to (I must) recreate my grandmothers Down East Yiddish accent. A true linguistic mystery! Thanks again. |
