BS: One long two short

Subject: BS: One long two short
From: John MacKenzie

I've been hobbling around for so long due to my arthritic hips that I've worn one leg down. Last night I realised when I was standing up with both feet flat on the floor, that my right knee was bent, while my left leg was straight. When I straightened my right leg my left heel lifted off the floor by about 2".
Have I worn one leg away, or is my pelvis now tilted after months of walking lop sided?
We need to know the answer.

Giok

Although not arthritic, I have habitually been standing on my right leg when at rest, the weight being taken off the left one. My right leg is shorter than the left now but I'm not sure why. Perhaps someone has the answer for this...is it truly that the wear and tear on the one leg is moreso than the other?
Best wishes, Mike.

My left leg has been about half an inch shorter than my right since I stopped growing, about age 16. I spent a couple decades wondering why "they" never seemed able to cut a pair of pants straight though, till a massage therapist noticed this "asymmetry" a few years ago.

So it was my legs, not the jeans, all those years!

Half an inch ain't half as worrisome as two inches though. Maybe there's some sort of insole you could wear in your shoe to compensate? I really doubt it will do your poor back or hips any favours in the long run!

Good luck,

daylia

i would recommend getting shoes with built up soles or insoles
to compensate...a chiropractor might be able to assess the
situation.

i thought this thread was about old fashioned telephones
that had party lines with specific ring patterns to
identify the phone being called. sort of like morse code
in patterns of long and short...

Giok,

You may want to check this out medically. My dear friend, Martha, had a hip replaced last year and she appears 2" taller. You may well have a worn hip socket. The pain may not be arthritis.

I would recommend X-Rays and an orthopedic specialist. The long term damage to your knees and back as well as the resulting digestive problems when everyhting inside is out of place - get some professional advice.

All of my old uncle's cows were born with legs on the left side 4 full inches shorter than on the right side. This wasn't intelligent design. It was Natural Selection, eventually, providing a way for the herd to graze around and up and down the steep hills in that part of Illinois!

Just a tall tale. (Taller on one side than on the other ;-)

Giok, I think SINSULL is on the right track.

My right leg is a bit shorter than my left -- the result of a slightly twisted pelvis (probably congenital) and a bad ankle fracture (January 1994, not congenital) -- and I have been told that eventually the differential pressure on the hip joints will cause "mechanical" wear -- now isn't that a delicate expression?

Would the National Health spring for a thorough orthopaedic review of your entire undercarriage?

I'm off to see a specialist tomorrow folks, they have promised me a new hip or two a while back, so it's getting time to start chivvying.

John - Go to a physiotherapist.

For years I walked around with one leg longer and a slightly protruding hip. I thought it was because of my scoliosis. Much to my surprise, my hip was locked. I layed down on a table and the physiotherapist literally pulled my leg (don't try this at home), I heard a pop, and now my legs are the same. It will also prevent you from having back pain and all kinds of other problems.

Try holding your pint in the other hand Giok. It might even out the old balance problem for ya. :-)

The Aussie Balanced Diet: a meat pie in one hand, and a cold beer (ok, lager!) in the other. It IS a hot climate up North.

My Dr told me that I have altered the way I walk due to pain from auto accident injuries, therefore one hip is raised up higher than the other. I also have debilitating disc disease in my knees, & the inside joints are worn halfway down. Add all this to lots of arthritis in my hips, knees & ankles & wow do I stand & walk strangely. There are many people who have one leg longer than the other, but there are plenty who, over time, alter their gait to compensate due to pain. You might consider finding out what a good Dr. could do for you. Pain is a lousy thing to have to live with.

It may be tht your pelvic/sacroiliac joint one one side is slightly out of whack. A good chiropractor, or a really good physical therapist ought to be able to tell you, and reset it, too. Either of them should order an x-ray before they try to move anything.

Have you ever landed badly on one hip or the other? Or sat down from any height? If so, this may be your problem.

Good luck,

Ingrid

Well, chop him off at the knees and call him tripod.... or Jake the Peg.

This is a true story. A workmate of mine went in for a new hip. He woke up with a new elbow, and a good case for a claim for medical negligence. He claimed for the rest of his life that the medical profession couldn't tell it's arse from it's elbow.

Well, his, anyway.

Good wishes to you, John.

Hope he had a good sense of humerus !

Doc put me on the waiting list today which means a wait of approximately 6 months, unless I have a spare £12000 to go private!!

Best of luck Giok. I know you have to wait but the two people I know who had hip replacements were so much better afterwards.

Just take it easy in the meantime.

Well, John, I weren't talkin' 'bout the wishbone treatment... Actually the Wes Ginny Slide Rule come up with it... We tie one end of the rope like unner yer armpits and 'round yer chest and then the other one to the shorter leg...

Add in a couple horses an'...

... good as new!!!

No wishbone 'bout it...

No, make that better than new 'er yer money back...

You in???

Don't know the answer for certain, but I have one leg just over 1/2" shorter than t'other and doc said everybody as a leg length difference.

As for the arthritis, try Debbie Shapiro's book "Your Body Speaks Your Mind."

Best wishes

SO Giok, by next year's Getaway you'll be up for contra dancing or Morris dancing in a kilt with Micca. Can't wait.

Meantime, do what the physiotherapist says. It will hurt but the better you do the excercises the faster you will heal. During all that boring recovery time you dould learn to play the banjo. Just a thought.
