NW Leicestershire Quarter Session

Subject: NW Leicestershire Quarter Session
From: MBSLynne

Keep forgetting to put this up....

The first birthday of the North West Leicestershire Quarter Sessions will take place on Thursday December 15th at the Turk's Head, Donisthorpe, NW Leicestershire. All four of the sessions we've had so far, including the music weekend last time, have been great, so let's hope we can keep it up!

For more info, PM me, or post here.

See you there?

Love Lynne

Sounds good! Is it instruments, or just voice?

Either or both! We try to keep it fairly informal, relaxed - and if you want to join in, that's fine...

It was originally meant to be a music session because they seem to be few and far between, but we had so many singers that it turned into a mixture. Basically it's a do-what-you-want session! I have to admit a hankering for a higher instrument profile though.....

-double base or kettle drum?

they have a large profile.........

A musician called lynn was first class
and could even tell woodwind from brass
during a session quite cosy
after a quart of old rosie
she tripped and fell right on her ..glass

Mmmmmm, I get it then - you don't like my singing!
So yeh, well, maybe I could leave my voice at home, bring my concertina and come as a musician ...

Well I hope it wasn't too awful Liath!

Thank you everyone for coming...another really good session. Liath added a new dimension to it with her harp, which is truly the instrument of the angels, and the Wurzels tribute band called "Strange Pony" were also a definite plus. Everyone else was great too of course.

Strange thing...this was the fifth Donisthorpe session and apart from my family and four other regulars, there have been different people at every one! I hope that doesn't mean that when they've been once they don't want to come again! It does mean that each session is totally different from the last though...never gets boring!

Watch out for the next one some time in March.

Well you are on cleaning up duty then Barry. NAUGHTY boy! (Smacks hand)

Another brilliant session, and, weirdly, a whole different crowd again, with a few notable exeptions.

This time instead of the harp we had Paul with his medieval pipes. A whole contingent from "The real music club" added to the evening. The people we can now begin to call regulars were as good as usual.....thanks Tim, Rachel, Maureen and Neil. And the beginning-to-be-regulars too. I think we probably had the most people yet.

Looks as though we'd better have another one then! Some time in June...watch this space!!

Thanks to the Recorder of the Quarter Session, the sentence was very lenient indeed considering. Hanged, drawn and quartered, well, that's fair enough, but they dropped the parking charge, and with good behaviour I could be out of the coffin within 600 years.

The next Quarter session should be some time in June. We have new Landpersons in the pub, but they are perfectly happy for the sessions to carry on. However, we are told that it is World Cup in June so does anyone know which, if any Thursday in June there will be no World Cup played? There will be loads of people in the pub with the Big Screen on when it's on so no good for sessions

Well you'll get here one day Terry!

Sally, I posted you some directions...hope you've got them by now. In case you didn't and for anyone else who needs it: get to the M42 (along the A5 for you Sal) and come off at junction 11 where it becomes the A42. Follow the A444 towards Burton on Trent. You go through Stretton, then on a left hand bend there is a right hand turn signposted Donisthorpe. There's a water or electric station on the corner. Turn right and follow the road into Donisthorpe. By "The Engine" pub, the road bears round to the right...follow that and a little way further on you will see the "Turk's Head" on your right. If you pass the church you've gone too far. The Turks is on a corner, so turn down the little lane and the car park is behind the pub. And there you are!

Now, as the Quarter Session is to be tomorrow, Lynne, (that's just one day - you said that numbers were "never your strong point"!), I wondered what the body count is likely to be?
Not the number of deaths in the boring dreary, dirgelike ballads we will probably be singing (NFDs please!), but the number of attendees.
Sandy & me
Lynne & family
Sally & Shot Dogs (& Steve too I hope but I suppose not, as its term time?)
Paul Burke
Boatin Wend & partner
Some locals too (eg Steve Thompson I hope?)

That's fine then. We'll wow them!
And no football to get in the way either!

Even better than last June, I thought. We all sat outside on the decking outside the pub again and sang and played. Loads of brilliant and enjoyable talent again. Sadly Sally and the Shot Dogs couldn't make it, but we had all the others that Alan mentioned plus a few more. The new landpersons loved it and want us back.

Last June, the neighbours complained....because they hadn't known it was on so didn't get to it at the beginning. So Ted put them on the mailing list and they were at the pub waiting for us this time.

We got to hear a new trio..."Runagle" whose CD will be out soon. I think Louise has a voice to rival some of the well known young folk singers...brilliant!

So thanks to the landpersons, Alan and Sandy, Louise and backing, Sonja, Frank, Tim, Steve, Paul, Maureen, Neil, Debbie and John, Ray, Debbie, Wendy and Nigel, Noel and Olga, anyone I've forgotten, and all the people who just came to lixsten.

Well up to now I'd have said the two June sessions where we sang outside were the best, but last night was really good. More musicians and instruments than we've ever had, with a scattering of good singing too. Thanks to everyone who came and we hope to see you again next time, which will be the Yuletide session on December 21st. On top of the great music last night, the pub actually had a choice of TWO good ciders!!!! Must be almost unique amongst Midlands village pubs.

See you in December?

Actually, I think the solstice is tomorrow Paul...it varies a day or two from one year to the next. Definitely still a solstice sing though. We missed you Paul, but I'm glad you are safe. Don't blame you for not risking the weather...I was quite worried about everyone driving here.

I hadn't actually expected many people in view of the horrible conditions, but in the event, I think we had more people than we've ever had!

As usual It was a really great session with a good variety of singers and musicians, and once again, totally different from all the sessions which have gone before. Just by the way, it was actually our second anniversary.

I do wish people would stop apologising..."I'm sorry, this isn't really folk". I don't give a bu**er what it is as long as it's music and you are playing and singing it yourself. After all, it's never been called a folk session has it? We had something from "Smells like teen spirit" by Nirvana. We had "Sweet child of mine".We also had some trad and modern 'folk' tunes and songs. It was all great.

See you in March...round about the equinox probably

Well it was much less well-populated than usual but fun nevertheless. There were slightly over a dozen of us and due to recent events in our lives I didn't really have the heart to run the thing so it just ran itself. More of a free-for-all than a singaround. We had a lot of music and some singing and quite a combination of the two with everyone joining in.

The next one will be in June, which is traditionally our best one of the year where we usually sit outside and sing and play. I hope many of you who couldn't make last night for one reason or another will be able to make it next time!

Subject: RE: NW Leicestershire Quarter Session
From: MBSLynne

Right...we had been thinking of stopping the sessions in view of the miserable, surly landlord (and the lack of cider). We now have the possibility of a change of venue so I'd like to know what everyone thinks. We can, if we like, use the Moira Furnace for the sessions. The accoustics are wonderful...Dave Barnes and I both had an experimental sing last weekend. It's a museum so likely to be no smoking (sorry, forgot to check) but going outside and standing by the canal for a smoke could probably be quite pleasant. It isn't a pub but we can probably get a local pub to put on a barrel of beer and one of Old Rosie (Hooray!!!). This brings me to the second question...what kind of beer? It's Burton Bridge they have and Ted assures me they are all pretty drinkable.

The third question: One of the reasons we were doing them on the Thursday evening was because the pub was too busy on Fridays and Saturdays. Several people have said it would be better to change the night, especially since we have a number of people who come from quite a distance. At the furnace there is no problem so do you think we should go for the Friday evening or the Saturday?

There is camping available including camper vans. They charge but it's only £4 a night.

So...what do you think?

Love Lynne
ps. We are also starting planning for a folk weekend as part of the Moira Furnace Festival next May. I'll keep you informed!

It sounds fine to me... I'd be happy about the Friday or the Saturday. Maureen might be troubled about the smoking, but in any case it's the law in pubs from only a few days later. It might be a bit of a risk for a pub to put on a barrel, as you can't be sure of numbers or what they'll want to drink. But you can always make it bring-your-own session.

Surly landlords- why do they do it? You'd think that they'd realise that running a pub means meeting all sorts of people.

Robbie...do you prefer Friday or Saturday? Shady will be thrilled if Lizzie comes.

I'm hoping that if the weather is as good as it was the last two Junes we can sit outside. The surroundings are lovely and the manageress has suggested that we could sit on the bridge over the canal by which you actually get into the room.

So far so good...any more??

Damn! Sorry about this guys. We can't have the session on the 23rd June due to a work commitment that has just cropped up. I'll get back to you and let you know the revised date. I guess it's the down side of doing it at a weekend when a lot of our work is at weekends

Suddenly realised that we cancelled the 23rd June session but haven't come up with an alternative. Hopefully it will be the following Saturday, 30th June. I'll let you know for sure in the next couple of days with the details. I think it will have to be a 'Bring your own' one this time as we don't really have time to organise anything else.

So sorry...I forgot to post back about this. No it's not on. Every time we try to organize a night we discover that there's something else happening...usually work in one form or another. We may give the summer one a miss, though we have thought about perhaps having it later in July? Otherwise the next will be in September. I'm not sure it's a good weekend for people to be travelling so perhaps it's no bad thing not to have it.

Hmmm...just posted to this and it seems to have disappeared. Try again.

Having failed to get our act together for the last two quarters, so many people have asked if we're having a Christmas session that it has spurred us on to arrange it. There was supposed to be a change of venue but it seems easier just to have it as usual. So....
At 8.00ish on Thursday 20th December in the Turk's Head in Donisthorpe there will be a Yuletide session.

Anyone coming??

Thanks all who came. I had a great time so I hope everyone else did too. Once again it was different from every other one we've had. Several people commented on it.

It was lovely to see everyone and great that people had come from so far away. We had people from Chester, Leek, Aylesbury and Harrow. The quality of the singing and music was wonderful and included at least three, no four...no more than that...people I would pay money to listen to. I have to say, as I said to her, that Amanda Diamond should be making and selling records. She is easily on a par with people like Kate Rusby.... a stunning singer.

I was kept totally happy as well, by hearing Eddie Richard's do "The Hiring Fair" which is one of my all time favourites. He was right when he said he'd never have got out of there alive if he hadn't done it for me. He also did "Meet on the Ledge" which is another one to make me totally happy. Houston Diamond did "No Woman No Cry", which I can listen to over and over again.
Steve Thomason was brilliant as ever. Mandotim was great and very useful since he can and does join in with all the music and I loved hearing the Country Joe and the Fish number he did, though amused to see that the only people laughing at it were the over 40s. Several younger people sat there listening with blank faces and not understanding most of it.

Tim and Neil on Swanee whistles were...interesting. Rachel (Cally Hanna) has obviously been doing a lot of practising and was great on both the concertina and the whistle. All the others were equally enjoyable and made a really good evening.

I must say I was so proud of my ShadyLady, who has always been quite a good singer though lacking in lung capacity. Suddenly her voice has become bigger, but remains beautifully clear. I know I'm a bit biased but I think she does brilliantly for 12 years old.

Once again, thank you everyone, it was wonderful to see and hear you all. We4 must make sure we continue to do the sessions regularly again. Still trying to find an alternative venue though, as the landlord remains a surly and unwelcoming sod even though we must have more than doubled his normal Thursday evening takings.

See you in March??

Love Lynne

Hi1 I'm with you about Amanda; somebody record her, and quick! The Hiring Fair is one of my favourites too, it was great to hear it in a session. Well done Shady, who I assumed was much older than 12, given the confidence and skill of her singing!
See you all next time I hope.
Tim
PS it wasn't Country Joe! It was 'Talkin' Vietnam Pot Luck Blues' by Tom Paxton! Small wonder the younger element didn't get some of the references!

Subject: RE: NW Leicestershire Quarter Session

Amanda says she's too busy at the moment as she's studying and doing disertations (Is that spelled right? It doesn't look like it somehow) and such like.

Shady started singing in public when she was 5 and belongs to three choirs now so she's an old hand! Hoping she can go back to having flute lessons now with a little help from our friends and family.

Tentative next date is possibly 15th of March, though if we manage to sort a better venue it may be 21st or 22nd March instead.

Someone mentioned the Moira mini folk festival we talked about in the summer. If we can get the Railway in Moira for sessions we could include that and the Furnace for the festival. It could be good!

Hello! We've been a bit slack with this over the last year. We will try to do better!

Unfortunately, we can't get the other venue...the landlord was most definite. So it's back to the surly but accomodating landlord at the Turk's Head. Unforunately, that probably means it will continue to be a Thursday evening.

Right...next session! Thursday 18th September at 8.00 ish.

Who's coming??

We have also been invited to help organize a folk festival at Moira furnace and are going to a meeting about it on Thursday. Don't know when yet but we will need stewards and helpers. We'll keep you posted!

Great Paul! It's a while since we've seen you!

Mr Happy, the proposed date is first weekend in September next year, but, having had the first meeting about it I'm not sure if it's a goer. The site poses an awful lot of problems being open to the general public and not able to be shut off. We have another meeting next week. I'll let you know when we've decided anything. I'm sorry to have to report the demise of the North West Leicestershire Quarter sessions. Ted tried to arrange one for March but, because there were so few people at the December one, the landlord said "No". Seems a bit stupid to me since he doesn't actually have to do anything and it menas he actually has some people in the pub, albeit only a few, rather than none at all. Oh well, is it any wonder the man is going bankrupt?

Can't, at the moment think of anywhere else to hold it so for now it's off. We will try and find somewhere else.

Have you tried "The Holly Bush" at Oakthorpe. They've recently started running the Monday Folk night again. I think the management are, once again, hovering about whether to sell the place but they seem pretty friendly.

...also, the landlord at the Britannia in Shepshed has a great upstairs room which is used for a Friday Folk Club - he's been very supportive; once again at loggerheads with the brewery but that seems par for the course nowadays.

21 Feb 09 - 10:08 AM (#2572436)
Subject: RE: NW Leicestershire Quarter Session
From: MBSLynne

Shepshed is too far away. One of the criteria for the session is that we should be able to walk there! I guess The Hollybush is in walking distance. It's a possibility. I'd have liked to keep it in Donisthorpe though. Well the Turks landlord is actually selling the place so if he gets a buyer we may be back in. Someone suggested we should club together and buy it as a sort of local cooperative pub.

However, having just been to "The Woodman", which is about 3/4 of a mile from us, to talk to him about sessions at the festival, I'm now wondering if that would be a goer. He doesn't seem to get many other customers.
