Are there any sites I can put up my music at for all to enjoy? for free of course...

I have some of mine at Soundclick
I only put up four (since I'd like to sell the bloody things!) but I think you can post as many as you wish. Good luck, Steve R.

There are loads of places.

I'm sorry, but you could surely do a bit of research by yourself, before asking such a stupid question.

Guest, I agree with one thing you say - the "I'm sorry" part. You are a sorry excuse for....

Sadie, keep asking questions. That is a legitimate method of research.

It was not a stupid question. I tried Googling the phrase "post free MP3s", and it was not obvious from the Google listings that any of the first 10 sites would accept contributed mp3s in the same way that, for example, Flickr accepts contributed images.

Unfortunately, the web is not set up in such a way that there's an easy way to find the answer to the question posed by Sadie from Shady Grove. Finding the answer has much more to do with web searching skills than with musical ones, and perhaps Sadie's expertise lies elsewhere. One thing that Sadie needs (although she didn't say so) is some advice about useful sites, in the experience of the sites' users. Searching the web to find out what users think about various sites is yet another uncommon skill. Finally, I presume that Sadie wants a site where the mp3s she posts might actually reach people who care about what she's recorded, and there's a wide range of vocabulary ("folk", "traditional", "acoustic", etc.) that might be relevant to that. Choosing the wrong vocabulary would limit a web search inappropriately.

I think Sadie made the right choice to seek community advice on this one rather than striking out on her own, armed with nothing more powerful than a search engine.

and we are assuming these ARE Sadie's mp3's and not mp3's of other artists that she wants to post.

You might be assuming that, MMario. I don't think that anyone else is...

well - it's not legal for her to post other artists without their permission -

Indeed not.

The question was:
"Are there any sites I can put up my music at"

so it's hardly an issue...

Thanks for the right word, "hosting." That's the word I needed to properly search. And thanks for the mention of Soundclick.

"I'm sorry, but you could surely do a bit of research by yourself, before asking such a stupid question."

I did and couldn't find what I needed. Mudcatters helped me. Thank you.

what would be the advantage of putting it in free places - scuse my ignorance. I suppose prisoners and very poor people could get to it. but if they're that poor - would they have a computer.

theres a lot of free music on my webste, but nobody actually going to log on to there without some slight interest in what you're doing. wouldn't it be better to get a free website and put it on there?

I think these are all interesting questions . do you use free websites. if so. why - rather than a specific artists website?

She decribes it as "my music" - I think in the context of the Mudcat the assumption is that means music she has made herself, unless she says otherwise. That's one of the things that are different about the Mudcat, and make it worth visiting.

Asking people here to advise on where they have found it convenient to put up their own music for sharing is a sensible idea. Getting advice directly from people whose judgement on other things you can check up on always makes sense.

Not quite what you're asking for, but there's a new site called Woven Wheat Whispers that's been the subject of a thread or two here recently that could help. They have a 'demo' section where you could post a few MP3's for free download, and the site specialises in 'folk' music (in the widest possible sense) - if that is why you're here, it could be the place for you.

Best of luck,
Andrew

I've had some difficulty with my initial use of soundclick and have not even been able to properly register with my info and be recognized by their system. I have not received their confirmation email with the activation code they supply to create an account with them. I can't even begin to start posting anything there until I receive the code an apply it to the account. It's not what I would characterize a good way to begin the whole process and it makes me wonder if this isn't a forewarning of even more technical glitch issues to be experienced. Well, I've already said it in one of my very own songs, "F-R-E-E".

"You get what you pay for, and more than you bargain for when it's F-R-E-E."

There are two that I can recommend, EZ Folk and Motagator

I do hope things turn out well at soundclick, but so far the answers are not forthcoming.

I seem to have no sooner posted that last note when I received soundclick's email notifying me of their email difficulties and now, with their help, have access with their site. Let the joy begin. ;o)

- Woven Wheat Whispers or SoundClick, or both?

Yahoo Audio Search Engine is a good place to do a search on Mp3s Free or otherwise.

Good luck

You will find Mrs Pavane's songs at http://www.motagator.net. You could probably post them there.

I *said* I was assuming it was her own mp3's - but having had the same question asked by hundreds of students using the same phrasing - when they mean "Where can I post the mp3's I've ripped from commercial CD's so that other people can get them for free" - the possibility of it being otherwise lurks in the recesses of my mind.

Weelittledrummer said, in part:

For the very good reason that many free websites don't provide for the ability of a visitor to listen or to download. I have a free site (which I invite you to visit, by CLICKING HERE). In order to twist the arm of a free site-holder to move up to a paid site, 50megs, my free host, doesn't provide music play or download facilities with free sites. So I post links to other sites, such as Motagator and my recording engineer, where some of my songs are playable and downloadable.

lets face it, its all new technology and nobody's really sure what the answers are.

Woven Wheat have been very nice to me.
As have Pulse radio really.

anyway theres no real need to be dismissive of people seeking to clear their minds abit on these tricky questions.

I think maybe you can get more webspace on free domains if you allow pop ups and this helps them make a bit of money on the deal.

Personally I use Fasthosts. Its a fairly idiot proof system and its about £3 a month to get started, although I think you have to buy a domain name. and you get people at the end of a phone line to help you - which I find very useful.
