People were asking about this book awhile ago. I knew I had it and I ran across it this evening. Was there something special that was being searched for? I'll be happy to supply the lyric if so.

Darn. I thought my 1948 copy was a first edition, but now that I read the fine print, I see that's not so. Don, can you determine the date of the first edition? Anybody know when the most recent edition was published?

The IOCA site is actively looking to update the book. They mention one as late as 1971.

That book was available in the east in the mid 50's for a couple of dollars but on the few times I've seen it on Amazon.com it runs upwards of $ 50.00! It was initially edited by Dick and Beth Best, but they're probably long gone, especially as one of the earliest editions I've seen came out in 1938.   It also sold for even less back then.

I have the 1948 ed. w/ the red cover also the yellow covered one.
also one w/ a plastic spiral holding the pages together that appears older however the front page is missing on the cover are the figures of 2 people singing one w/ a banjo. I suspect that it is older. I sugest that you contact Roland Vinyard 597 State Highway 162 Sprakers,NY 12166 he puts out the IOCALUM NEWS I an sure he would have some information on this.. If not he might put out a request in the next issue..   Allan

My copy, which I bought in 1958 for $1.95, is called "THE NEW Song Fest" on the cover, but simply "Song Fest" on the title page. It is "Fifth Printing, May, 1958" & "Copyright 1948, 1955"; the preface is dated 1954. The "preface from the original collection" is reprinted therein, but with no date; its editors are identified as "Brown '36" & "Dartmouth '37".

Hi, Joe - one of mine is the same 1958 edition you have - except that mine has a shiny green cover and the title Linde Ski Club Song Book, from the Linde Employees Athletic Association in Tonawanda, New York - cover courtesy of Al Dekdebrun's Sporting Goods in Buffalo. Inside, it's Song Fest, published by Crown. It's interesting to see that folk songbooks were popular enough to be published for advertising in the 1950's. I have a copy of Lomax & Lomax Folk song USA that was a promo for First Nationwide Savings.

Remember when folk acts like the Seekers and the Kingston Trio were so popular that they could make money making celebrity appearances in commercials?

My name is Christiaan Adams. I am the current Executive Secretary of IOCA, the organization from which the Song Fest collection originally came. I have been trying to research the collection's history for several months now, and am very excited to see all the discussion of it on this web site.

This thread contains the oldest reference I've seen to this book so far (1938). I'm not sure how to contact you, but if the person who wrote the post about the 1938 edition (NH Dave) would contact me, I would greatly appreciate it. I have the 7th Printing, 1959. I purchased it in Middlebury, Vermont as a freshman at Middlebury College, in 1959-60. It fell apart years ago, and I three-hole punched all the pages, and stapled the front and rear covers to sheets of card stock and put it in a binder, where it remains contented and legible. It's a priceless resource, especially since political correctness would prevent it ever being reprinted.

Ain't that the truth, Peter? Much of our past will be lost, simply because Grandma and Grandpa didn't have a respect for 21st-century manners. I suppose My Pious Friends and Drunken Companions is doomed to the same fate. Any publisher who dared to attempt to reprint that one, would be eaten alive by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Songs for Swinging Housemothers, same thing.
