Marilyn, the receptionist at the clinic, who was patient, wise and un-exciteable. The radio d.j. who expouded on great topics, the pilot, the proprietor of the store, the doctor, and the moose who walked down main street. It was set in Alaska, if i remember correctly. This show was only on for a couple ofyears, it think, and has been gopne for over 10 years now...maybe even 15. Any other mud cats out there who watched and liked this show? |

Probably one of my favourite characters was the owner of the local bar, Holling Vincoeur and another was film buff Ed Chigliak. It ran for a total of 110 episodes between 1990 and 1995 and was actually filmed in Roslyn, Washington. Bernard Stevens: Excuse me. Dr. Joel Fleischman: Yeah. Bernard Stevens: Where am I? Dr. Joel Fleischman: You know, I've been asking myself that same question since I got here. I finally figured out we are somewhere between the end of the line and the middle of nowhere. I liked everyone in the show, even the characters I disliked (if you know what I mean lol)...the writing was superb for the longest time until the last season and then the original writer left and the stories just went astray. I wish there was another re-run. My Fav Characters though, Ed, Marilyn Whirlwind and Ruth Anne Miller Great show. I think there is a VHS or DVD of the series but I can only imagine how much that box set costs:>) Jude |

I suspect the numbskulls running our TV station s believe we all want reality TV or tedious sitcoms rather than intelligent TV (i.e. Twin Peaks, Arrested Development) of which Northern Exposure is one of the best. I liked Leonard Quinhagak, the progressive shaman. A recurring character played by Graham Greene. Of course the whole damn town was great. The only part that ever got tiresome was the running sexual tension between Maggie and the Doctor. Jeez! Just DO it already and quit bitching at each other so we can get on to the more interesting characters. Hope TV cycles back to making quality shows like that again soon... though I do like "House". And Giok, the tune you are thinking of was called "Ojibway Square Dance", recorded by Georgia Wettlin-Larsen and one version (called there "Turkey in the Straw") can be found on this album. But the version from the show is on this one. |

Chris the DJ... very entertaining, never knew where his speil was going to go Adam the Chef... Ditto moose... great character actor, though slightly type-cast. Trivia - The name "Roslyn" seen on a billboard in the opening sequence is the name of the town in Washington where many of the scenes were shot. The constant notoriety, flow of tourists, filming schedule, and parking restrictions that disrupted the day-to-day quiet of this town during production rubbed some of the town's residents (mostly retired miners) the wrong way. So despite the $3,000 that the show brought to Roslyn with each day of shooting of NORTHERN EXPOSURE, some 136 residents of the town signed a petition in 1991 that asked the show's producers to pack up and leave their town alone. Most of the following episodes were taped in Redmond WA, about an hour away, until the show ended in 1995. Brian. |

Such memories! The show simply went in strange directions and was pretty good at it. In the last couple of years, they started getting really weird and doing mystical stuff rather that just exploring interesting people...but I miss it. |

Obnoxious as hell, but Barry Corbin is a great actor and he had some wonderful lines and situtations. How many of you have watched "Ballykissangel"? I was always struck by the similarity between the two shows. Each town had the "rich guy", the priest in BallyK and the doctor in Exposure were both out of their natural elements, the female leads, Maggie in Exposure and Assumpta in BallyK, were strong women owning their own business and the attraction with the male lead took years to develop. There are many other similarities. I think BallyK may actually have been a stronger series but they both hit on the same premise. A quirky community and great ensemble casts. Lightning strikes twice! |

Low key and funny; but not funny "Ha ha," it was funny sort of whimsical and off-the-wall. Not the unusual TV crap. I loved all of the characters, every one of them, including Maurice, the quintessential rich pompous ass. He did have a certain charm (he was as vulnerable as anyone, no matter how much he tried to hide it) and his lust for riches and power was totally predictable. As one of the characters (Adam, the sasquatch cum chef, if I remember correctly) said, "He won't stab you in the back. He'll walk right up to you, stick the knife in your guts and twist it, and while your guts are spilling out on the ground, he'll look you straight in the eye and smile!" Gotta admire that kind of honesty. Shelly was a marvelous mix of a self-admitted history of round-heeled promiscuity and completely naïve innocence. And now that she was married, completely devoted to Holling. Marilyn Whirlwind (love that name: I can't think of anyone much less whirlwindish) was a real sweetheart. Totally unflappable. Maggie, suddenly compulsive about cleanliness and avoiding tiny crawling things, sitting at the bar in The Brick and finding herself conversing with a dust mite, was one of the funniest schticks I've ever seen on TV. Complaining bitterly about how tough his life is, and how one of his several dozen sons is flunking carpet navigation. . . . Gave Maggie a whole new outlook on dust mites. Eve (Adam the chef's wife (Valerie Mahaffey) was a total riot. I've seen Ms. Mahaffey on a number of shows and she can play "deeply neurotic" like no one else and make it hilarious. Brilliant! I think one of my really favorite characters was shaman Leonard Quinhagak (Graham Greene), Ed Chigliak's mentor (sort of). He would often give assurances of how well something would work, then pause for a second and say, "Or not." A good grasp on the vicissitudes of life. Currently watching him in re-runs of The Red Green Show as Edgar Montrose, the explosives "expert" who never met a problem that couldn't be solve by using enough dynamite. Roslyn, Washington, where Northern Exposure was filmed, is only an hour or so's drive from Seattle and I've been there a number of times, twice since the show was on the air. Barbara and I know the couple who retired there and built a large, fairly luxurious log home. A bit more than just a "cabin." Pretty sumptuous, actually. The production company paid Jim and Marge to film there. In the show, it was Maurice's place. The "bubble house" of the guy with all the allergies was in Jim and Marge's back yard. After watching the show a lot, it's really weird to park in front of The Brick and look up the street and see the mural of the camel on the wall of the Roslyn Café. Sort of "other worldly." I wonder if they are showing re-runs of this on any channel or cable or satelite? I remember the ;great dream scenes.. was there once a charcter who played a boy in a bubble type fellow who was so sensitive to chemicals, pollution, etc that he had to insulate himself from all pathogens, etc? any way, i am glad that others, also appreciated this show. any more rememberances? the links below are dvd's for sale and a down load site... |

Shelly, the prime example, seemed like such a waste of a good looking skin. Then you met each of her parents, and then you wondered how she turned out as well as she did. Eventually you learned by degrees that there really was some intelligence, and a great deal of character, there; Holling was right after all, and she was the best thing that ever happened to him. Ruth had come to Alaska to start a new life for herself as a mature widow. D'ya remember when Ed learned how old she was, and bought her a grave site in a beautiful spot as a gift? Her response was to dance with him, on her grave site. By the end of it all, the insiders were aware of how much Marilyn had become the calm at the center; the last moment of the series was of her looking out her window for a moment, then pulling down the shade. |

They are obviously lovers. They influence the town (which at the time is a real cesspool) for rhe better so much that one winds up having the town named after her, and the other one had the eatery named for her after she went off with the Lincoln Brigade to fight in Spain---where she was killed in action. Iris Dement singing "Our Town" was a perfect choice for background music as they showed everyone wrapping things up. And even though they were all fictional, it was comforting to know that Chris and Maggie, Ruth Ann and Walt, Maurice and the State Trooper were finally matched up and happy, and I could rest easy that night knowing that everything was well with them all. Considering how old people are conceived by Hollywood, as buffoonish or oversexed, it was nice to see them portrayed as just regular folks for a change. |

All of Maggie's lovers died strange deaths. The hilarious funeral for the one hit by a weather satellite still makes me laugh. But Fabio, the Dancing Bear Changeling, escaped that fate. She spent a night and a day with him in the woods with him - fairy tale magic. Wonderful stuff. Favorite line? "There's a call for you on line2." "Marilyn, we have only one line." The geodesic dome man - can't think of his name but isn't he the actor from ER? |

My brother and sister "helped" me with the estate one day when they weren't supposed to and the tapes vanished along with a lot of other stuff. I changed the locks after that. Tapes are long gone, probably recorded over. Damn. |

All the characters were great, but favourite - Chris-in-the-morning definitely. mmmmm. We in the UK have NEVER had ANY re-runs, just one showing on Channel 4 and that was it. I have a video set of Series 1, I know there are some more out in the US, but people say they don't have the original music (due to copyright). Oh and I have a Macey's stuffed moose with a NE scarf! A bit sad for a woman of 54? |

Just plain weird, but good though. Who the hell ever thought of writing Kafka into the script. Sure, he had been living in Cicely, Alaska doing his thing as if it were perfectly normal! And the bizarre but great episode with the Doc finding his rabbi under water after being pulled in by a huge fish he hooks onto---or something like that... Art |
