I'm also interested in "Uptown Saturday Night" by Bob Gibson, as well as his 45rpm "Blues Around My Head" also the compilation LP's "Something to Sing About" and "Everybody Sing, volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4" |

16 Jan 99 - 11:17 AM (#54394) Subject: RE: Bob Gibson/Chicago Mob Scene From: Art Thieme Chicago Mob Scene ---- an LP featuring various folks singing around Chicago in the mid 1950s-----Gibson sang under the name of "Samuel Hall"---he once told me he did that because of wanting to "avoid other professional commitments conflicting with his being on that LP". Oyher singers on it were Larry Ehrlich--a Chicago labor lawyer who wrote parts of "Done Laid Around This Old Town Too Long" (shares copyright with Paul Clayton, Pete Seeger, Bill Monroe, Billy Grammer & others probably). LP featured a Ben Shahn-like drawing on the cover of the street signs at Chicago and Dearborn in that city. Old folkies (like me) will recall that those coordinates were the location for an early folk mecca/club/bar, THE GATE OF HORN----where Gibson was a star in the early 60s and which featured many other larger names of the era. I saw a barefoot Joan Baez open for Gibson there (before he introduced her to stardom of her own at Newport Fest '59 (I think). Fone memories... You probably know this, but these are the Bob Gibson CDs I've found: "...Revisited" (a recreation of Live at the Gate of Horn, a classic), "The Perfect High" (recently released), "Making A Mess of Commercial Success" (Bob singing Shel Silverstein songs), and "Stops Along the Way" (an intimate "live" studio recording with Michael Smith on bass and a studio filled with his friends). Get in touch with the folks who do the Rediscover Music catalog in Naperville, Illinois (I believe). I'd personally love it if someone would release "Funky in the Country" onto compact disk. It remains an inspiration to me as this is when I discovered Bob and I was lucky enough to be at the Amazingrace Coffee House when they were recording (even had to ask someone to stop playing the spoons for the sound engineer because it was messing up the recording). This book will be published and released probably around next Christmas, and it will have a CD of Bob's attached. It is for her that I am trying to find some of these albums...she has all of the Gibson albums except Uptown Saturday Night...what she lacks are the compilations with Gibson cuts on them. Most notable, Chicago Mob Scene....I have emailed Fritz at Golden Ring, but again..if anyone knows where I might find a copy of either of the aforementioned albums, or maybe has one they are willing to part with...please let me know...thanks! |

Her's the notes I wrote for the CD booklet. Bob Gibson was one of those folks who influenced folks around Chicago so very much. Since the 1950s he was a larger than life character. Especially in those early days, when he did mostly traditional songs, he was a great folksinger. We'd wait for new Gibson albums and quickly learn every song on them. Somewhere along the way Bob developed a terrible rare disease of the nervous system (progressive supranuclear palsy) and in the 1990s he, of necessity, went to live with his daughter in Portland, Oregon. In mid-August of 1996 many of us received a letter from Bob: "As my health has declined, I find that I may miss the music most of all. I miss making music and being around others who have music in their blood. So I'm going to have a party and invite everyone to bring their voices, instruments and songs. Please come to the Sheraton Nort Shore on Friday, September 20th, 1996. This may be the last chance I have to see many of you. I won't be able to play and sing with you, but I'm really looking forward to being an audience of one!" After that came several phone calls from Bob---terribly sad phone calls---I could barely understand him... The part was a great one. Many folks from the old days were there. We sang for Bob well past midnight... After flying back to Portland with his elecric wheelchair and his full-time caregiver, Bob Gibson died in his sleep exactly one week after he held his own wake! They spent most summers together on the farm outside Hopkinsville, KY. When Tandy and I got married Logan's mother, Corilla English, gave me her son's banjo. Its a 1925 Bacon & Day Silver Belle five string, all original except the tuners and they're pretty old. Even the original case filled with playbills and posters from his gigs. I framed one from a concert with Carolyn Hester at the Byrdcliff Theatre in Woodstock, N.Y. July 23rd, 1960. I've got most if not all of Logan's recordings including a Social Security album that has him being interviewed by Oscar Brand. Great memories were in the case and in the banjo. An honor to have it. It contains some of the music to his first two albums. I did a book search on the web last year for an obscure children's book called the "Churkengoose" and I was able to find it. Good Luck! It was written by a relative of my mother's (her cousin's father)-Ben Ross Barenberg (or was it-Ross Ben Barenberg?). So were several other Gibson children---Sarah, Susan, Steven Camp, etc. Bob was quite "active" and I suspect there are MANY offspring all over. I'd be willing to bet that "churkendoose" was the prototype for the "flub-a-dub"---the strange puppet animal on the Howdy Doody TV show in the 50s. Art |
