Dark is the night, and rough is the sea,
The muster is formed and ready are we.
The lifeboat is manned and tossed on the wave,
Her errand of mercy to rescue the brave.

                "The Lifeboat"

The song is specially dedicated to the memory of the sad catastrophe connected with the Lifeboats "Eliza Fernly" of Newport, and the "Laura Janet" of St. Annes', on Thursday, December 9th, 1886.

The "Mexico"" ran aground in a storm, and the Lytham, St. Anne's and Southport lifeboats all went out to help. The St. Anne's lifeboat was lost with all hands, the Southport lifeboat capsized and all the crew but two were drowned, but the Lytham lifeboat managed to reach the ship and take the crew to safety. 27 lifeboatmen (all volunteers) died to save the 12 crewmen of the Mexico, which is still the worst loss of life in the history of the British lifeboat service.
