Link to a BBC Radio 4 programme about this poem.
Much discussion of the translations and best of all a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the song in the original Irish.
Enjoy.

Wasn't that a wonderful programme? I just happened to sit down and listen to it amidst the chaos of house renovation approaching Christmas....
Wish I'd recorded it. Donal Óg is my second favourite song of all time, so it was a joy to hear other people talking about it and what it means to them.

I've just followed your link Keith and see that as well as being able to listen again online, the programme is repeated next Saturday 17 December 2005 23:30-0:00 (Radio 4 FM).

Definitely recommend it to all lovers of poetry- in fact, anyone with a heart to be touched.

Well Keith a little bit of the hidden Ireland which will give great pleasure to anyone, hearts of stone included.

I remember one wit telling me that had that poor pleading girl a face like a mares ass you couldn`t have forsaken her.

There's poetry in that too!

And sure, such a lass could still be a Greek king's daughter in bed.

Especially on a dark night.

Keith.
