French noel questions

Our beloved guitarist wants to sing and play French noels. She went to a high school with a strong French program, and she used to have a "whole sheaf" of French noels. Now she wants to sing them again.

What makes a song a French noel?

We have three so far - Il est ne le divin enfant, Entre le Bouef, and Noel nouvelet. (sp) Can anybody suggest any others?

I would like to find MIDI's of the songs, then I could lower the key for all us altos. I tried searching, but apparently I need song titles.

(I never learned French.)

Hymns and Carols of Christmas has a 'non-English' list of about 25 Frensh carols and links to the words and music (midis, etc.), and links to two other excellent web sites.

No luck. Perhaps without the #French

Sad to say, that site, which looks so promising, is rife with flaws.

Most of the links don't work - the songs are not available on the server. The link to "Guillo bring your tambourine" does work, but when I try to put the lyrics in, the lyrics don't transfer.

I know! I'll take the titles off the site and see if I can find them elsewhere.

Stay tuned for further developments.

Some others:

Quittez, Pasteurs
Le sommeil de l'enfant Jésus
Quoi, ma voisiine, es-tu fâchée
Cantique de Noël
Pat-a-pan
Ballade de Jésus Christ
Quoique soyez petit encore
Dors ma colombe
Noël des Ausels
D'où viens-tu, Bergère?

There's a book called The International Book of Christmas Carols, published by Stephen Greene Press and distributed by Walton Music Corp. It has lots of good Christmas music from around the world, including several from France.

There are a few in the Oxford Book of Carols (certainly Pat-a-Pan). You could maybe borrow a copy from your local library?

Thanks, John. I've added those titles to my list.

Les, The Oxford Book of Carols is an idea, but I would have to enter the note on computer, type in French (a language I don't know) and transpose them for us altos and figure out the chords. I was hoping to download the songs so as not to make this project my life's work.
