Nimrod Workman Video - Lord Bateman

Hi out there,

Some years ago I was in the house of a friend of a friend in Tennessee and saw an amazing video of Nimrod Workman singing Lord Bateman. Just recently I was at the Appalshop place in Kentucky and bought their video of Nimrod thinking that would be the one. Although very enjoyable it doesn't have much singing and certainly not Lord Bateman.

Can anyone help point me in the direction of the video I want?

Jack

Encarta, of all places has a download as well as purchase info for a recording of Nimrod singing "Lord Baseman" (on Rounder) which I suspect is the song you are looking for. No speakers at work so I didn't bother to take a listen.

There is also "Dreams and Songs of the Noble Old", a Lomax video available through Rounder on which he may sing. (I am assuming the Appalshop video you picked up was an Appalshop production and so a different video from this one.)

I'm not sure if this is the video you are looking for, but Nimrod Workman appeared in a documentary that was released by Vestapol Video. I can't remember if he sang that song, but you can do a search for Vestapol and send them an e-mail. Stefan Grossman, who distributes the video, would probably know.

I think that is the video I was thinking of Janie - I could not remember the title and I forgot that it was from Alan Lomax.

Well - I'm still looking! Rounder just replied today to say they no longer carry videos so couldn't say whether 'Lord Baseman'(Bateman) was on 'Dreams and Songs of the Noble Old'. Amazon have it, but I don't think they will give me any content info in that detail!

Anyone out there know if it contains Nimrod singing the said ballad?

Jack, might you be able to get in touch with his daughter, Phyllis Boyens? She used to perform some with Nimrod and may have family archives from which she can confirm what is on the tape? I don't have time to do a search now, but if you Google her I bet you can find out how to contact her.

The Nimrod Workman You Tube video is one of the finest pieces of ballad singing I have seen, an out-take from Alan Lomax's American Patchwork TV series. Lots of other remarkable stuff on the Lomax channel on You Tube - look at Little Margaret, and see the listening older singer enraptured, see the New Orleans White Eagles lamming in to their chant. Wondrous.

I have had the LP of Nimrod with Phyllis Boyens for many years. It is extraordinary. He should be better known.

I remember the first time I heard Nimrod singing "Oh, Death." Absolutely chilling.
