Tech: Need music editing program

Hi: I am looking for a music editing program for PC that could be used to edit music files recorded on a Pansonic PR-US360 digital recorder. Recorder came with a program "Voice Studio" but the program does not do very much other than transfer and convert files to wave format for the PC. Would like to add effects like reverb and mix tracks etc. Perhaps I am expecting too much. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks: Jim

most likely you will have to do the conversi0on to wav format to do your editing in any case. Try audacity. free download.

Jim, once you have it in WAV format, you can do that sort of thing with a number of Windows programs or even Mac programs should you be using a Macintosh.

I'd second Audacity. It has a range of 30 or 40 downloadable effects including reverb - a compressor - echo - speed up - etc etc

Dead easy to use too

In another thread about digital voice recorders I was noting the "damping down" of the resonance of my voice. Using a program like Audacity to add some reverb--would that help compensate some for the lack of range?

Janie - I *think* it could help - not sure. It wouldn't be the same though - because those frequencies would still be missing

Remember that a lot of the "resonance" you hear when you are singing is literally inside your head. You are also hearing the effects of the room in which you are singing. Note the difference between singing in a loaded closet versus a bathroom. Close-miking your voice will cut out most of the room effect, leaving you with just your unadorned voice. You will probably want to sweeten it with a touch of reverb and maybe a little delay to put back that resonance you hear when you sing.

Generally, if you can hear the effect, it's too much. Try dialing it up until you notice it, then gently dial it back until it's no longer apparent. That will probably be about right.

Can I just shove in another vote for Audacity? Bob Webb and I use it all the time. Reliable and simple. Audacity, that is, not Bob Webb. Although I don't know...

I have downloaded Audacity and find that it works well. However, I cannot seem to get tracks in sync. Perhaps someone can advise me just how this is accompolished. Tried clicking on all sort of track allingment settings but just cannot seem to get them in line so that they play in sync. All help appreciated. Thanks: Jim

For some threads on using Audacity:

They might help.
