18 Jan 99 - 03:22 AM (#54647) Subject: song book From: Barry Finn Normally wouldn't plug a book here but I happened on what I'd say is a gem. "The Book Of Pirate Songs" is by Stuart Frank & published 1998 by the Kendall Whaling Museum, Sharon, Mass. USA 02067. ISBN 0-937854-05-0. Stuart is the Director of the Kendall Museum & has written nautical/music books as well as penned a few songs & done some recordings in the sea music genre. Those in the Northeast part of the US, or those with an interest in sea music maybe familar with him as well as any who have the latest edition of Hugill's Shanties of the Seven Seas", Stuart wrote the Rememberance to Stan in the book's beginning. Anyway about the book, excellent. Covers 62 songs starting back as far as "John Dory" (Child #284) going back to 1575 up to the Music Hall era & the Songsters. The chapters break it up into Old Ballads, Broadside Ballads, Women Buccaneers, Victorian Songs, Songs from Popular Songsters & last Related Ballads. The backround histories to the songs is extremely well researched & well done as are the backround of the song's subjects. The music is written out for most the songs as well as cords. Thought I'd pass it along. Barry |

30 Jan 99 - 02:30 PM (#56456) Subject: RE: Shanties and Sea Songs From: Joe Offer Hi, Billy - Stan Hugill's 1961 Shanties from the Seven Seas was reissued in 1994 by the Mystic Seaport Museum (click here), but I couldn't find the book listed at the museum store. There were several copies there when i got mine in November, so maybe an e-mail would help you get one there. It's listed as immediately available at Amazon.com, and special order at Barnes and Noble. The only complaint I have about the Hugill reissue is that the lyrics should be in a larger or less ornate font, because they're very hard to read. Another excellent book of sea songs is William Main Doerflinger's Songs of the Sailor and Lumberman, available at Barnes and Noble. I've found with these online bookstores that if the book is available for shipping within 24 hours, you'll get your book. If there's any indication that there may be a delay in shipping, you may or may not get your book. Both of these books are trade paperback reissues. You may wish to look for the original hardcover versions at a used book store, perhaps http://www.bookfinder.com/. -Joe Offer- |

31 Jan 99 - 12:17 AM (#56544) Subject: RE: From: Barry Finn Hi BillyJ, there's no CD that accompanies the book, there is written music & cords for guitar if that helps. These are all ballads & songs, no shanties. Recordings of these would be a bit hard to put together as there are so many & some of these are older & more obscure versions than what you'd normally hear recorded. Also there are for example 3 versions or relations of Sir Walter Raleigh Sailing in the Lowlands, Captain Ward, Sir Andrew Barton & Captain Kidd. A couple of Captain Every, Kelly the Pirate, Bold Princess Royal, Female Warrior. So to put together recordings of the seperate versions would also be a task, better that you could read the music, here's where I curse myself. Any way a great book no matter how you splice it.
