16 Dec 05 - 11:49 AM (#1628847) Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: GUEST,Jon Perhaps the difference in results here is that some are using the filter and others the supersearch (which search for different things anyway - subject vs message body). As far as I understand it, the supersearch has not been updated since the crash as it looks to provide some chance of providing a means of restoring the old message_id order. |
16 Dec 05 - 12:01 PM (#1628852) Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Joe Offer Jon's right. The SuperSearch depends on an index, and it hasn't been updated because we'd like to reorder the threads first. The SuperSearch is only one of our search engines. You can check the first message of the FAQ for full search instructions. On QuickLinks, we have the Old Advanced Forum Search which searches by user name and by message title. On the Forum Menu, we have the Filter, which searches by thread title. The Filter is our fastest search engine, and it's the one I use most. But yeah, Clinton, our SuperSearch is broken and has been for several months. -Joe Offer- |

16 Dec 05 - 02:38 PM (#1628954) Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Jim Dixon Sometimes you can use Google to search Mudcat. It doesn't always find what you're looking for, because not all threads have been indexed by Google. Just add "site:www.mudcat.org" (without quotes) to your search argument. For example, with the argument search suck site:www.mudcat.orgGoogle finds about 1,290 Mudcat threads where the words "search" and "suck" appear on the same page. It's even easier if you have Google's taskbar installed. You don't have to type "site:www.mudcat.org" - you just click "Current site" and it searches whatever website you already have loaded. This can be really useful when you're searching a site that doesn't have its own search engine, or if you just don't want to take the time to figure out how their search works. |

16 Dec 05 - 08:12 PM (#1629151) Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: GUEST,Joe Offer, at work
The Search Box is mostly for the text within a thread (but it doesn't cover the most recent year). Use the other search engines if you're searching for titles. I will agree that it is inconvenient that the SuperSearch isn't working perfectly, but that's what the situation is right now. -Joe Offer- |
