Happy Birthday!

The first woman to enlist as a soldier in the War for Independence,

soldier-warrior Deborah Sampson
(disguised as a young man, Robert Shurtleff)

was born 12/17/1760
(d.29 Apr 1827).

Only song reference I've come across is "Deborah Sampson," a 'counterfeit folk song' by Sarah Lifton written in the 1970s.

(For biography, see The National Cyclopedia of American Biography, James T White, 1979) or Warrior Women and Popular Balladry 1650-1850 Dianne Dugaw, Cambridge U. Press, 1989

ALSO:
Happy Saturnalia! The 7-day annual festival begins on 12/17.
Oh good ale, thou art my darling
Thou art my joy both night and morning

Happy Saturnalia, indeed!

Thanks for the info about Deborah Sampson. I had not heard of her. Another important woman we don't hear of often is the "female Paul Revere, Sybil Ludington. She was only 16 when she made her important ride.

We have heard Sarah Lifton sing this song and it may be counterfeit but you would never know it. It's excellent.
