Mudgathers are the 'In Thing'!!!

We've been offered a Gather at Crediton Festival, held 31st March - 2nd April 06 at Cheriton Fitzpaine in Devon.

How about it? Who's going?

I will be there, cunningly disguised as a Shakespeare Mummer (as will a certain hirsute, concertina-playing fellow).

So, as long as our performances don't clash with the gather ...

Well, that's 5 of us then, enough for a decent round (of beer at least)!!! Just gotta get a suitable time then - I suggested Saturday tea-time to Pete the other day as it's usually a fairly 'slack' time at most festivals - but I haven't any idea of the program yet.

For any Catters who haven't yet experienced the delights of the Crediton Festival, it's free and centred around the Ring of Bells at Cheriton Fitzpaine which has Real Ale (hoorah) & good reasonably priced food. There's provision for caravans & campers & indoor & outdoor camping & lots going on including:

Local & National Folk Performers & Concerts
Singarounds & Music Sessions
Morris Dancing & Mumming & Hoodening
Saturday Night Supper Bash
Medieval Combat Show
& now a MudGather!!!

Unfortunately no web-site, but I have a contact email addy if you'd like to PM me (I'm still wary of putting people's details on the net, ain't I the silly one...)

Folks, maybe y'alls could help me with something. I've been working on WWII stories written by a late, dear friend. Part of his childhood during the war was spent in Devon, in the area of Chawleigh. If it would be possible to enquire about a "Bells Farm" owned by the Webber family in the mid-1940's, it would be a HUGE thing to be able to show a picture to his surviving family on this side of the pond. He went to school in nearby Chulmleigh.

His military service was near Exeter, in the late 40's, and he was based at Topsham Barracks for basic training.

A rough draft of his stories is here at Mudcat, in the thread, "Proofreading Help Needed ASAP." The links I have found so far are also in that thread.

Thanks for any help,

~Susan

Count me in - we've got space reserved for the campervan. Seems a long way off, but with the Solstice tomorrow the sun will soon start rising in the sky and we'll be on our way to Spring.

Midwinter Blessings to all.

If I thought that I could keep up with a dance I'd give it a try Sue - but maybe I should just watch the experts!

Doctor Death: Haven't heard when the day of song is, isn't it in the Unicorn? And are you coming to join us in Crediton?

Mmmmm! Yes, I guess that the man with a voice and a beard does describe me pretty well and so a special hello to you! But perhaps there are more than a few other men who could be described that way and who went to Chippenham, Sidmouth & Whitby etc...
Anyway, are you the lovely lady with the smile and sparkling eyes?
And, yes, I will certainly see you at the Ring o' Bells!

Be nice to visit places from the past. Brother in law went to Grammar school in Crediton...(Me at Totnes) Such memories....now member of Gainsborough Folk Club....as featured on MUDCAT!.......

Not forgotten, Oh Guru, but I'm still trying to sort out when we're dancing (as Herbaceous Border). In order to avoid the 'proper morris' times, I was looking at 4.0, but could probably make it 4.30 (or even 4.45 so people can get from the Half Moon to the Ring of Bells) if catters are keen not to miss any of the Mudgather. Trouble is it then clashes with other things!

I'm still on the look out for musicians. (Anyone who'd like to go on Herbaceous' mailing list, please PM me.

We had a great time. Thanks everyone for making it such a a fun weekend.
Thanks to Pete & John for all thair hard work and inspiration, and congrats on a great event
Highlights for us were the Celtic concert in the Methodist Chapel (Oh the irony of singing Weslh folk songs in a Chapel!) to a largely local audience, Ian Ferguson was particularly touching with his pieces of family history.
And Bonzo & Doris!!!!!
How can 2 people create such a mess in so short a time. But we were in tears of laughter. A roll of cellotape will never look the same.
And nice to see such a broad range of sessions.
Sorry we missed the Mudgather, MGAS.

It's The Wedding next. Then Miskin.

It was great to meet up with you all again, we only got there for Sunday lunchtime in the end, but I feel a lot better for just having been there for such a short time and met up with you all again after the long cold winter! I have developed a lump in my thyroid gland, it is only 2.7 x 2.7 x 3 cm but it is affecting my voice, this has led to a small crisis in confidence, as I sometimes cant get all the notes I am used to getting. I am waiting to have the darned thing removed, but if I decline the offer of singing next, it isn't cos I am not enjoying myself! and I can dance now my knees are done, as Sue the borderer can confirm.
See you all at Miskin,
Cheers, Lucy
