Just to make it clear, if it weren't for Christ, there wouldn't be a Holiday or Christmas!! So call it like it is, CHRISTMAS!!
Merry Christmas to all!!

Yes I am. I know to stand up for what's right. My definition of a fight isn't physical, like you're probly thinking. It's standing up for what I think is right & not letting outsiders tell me what to say or beleive.

Do you think Christians sit back, don't say anything and let people run over them? There are many definitions of a "good Christian". Whether I say my peace or not, it's my beleif & opinion. I was born & raised in the USA and I am proud of it. Hope you are proud of who you are too. God Bless You All!!
Merry Christmas!

So people who have a different faith from you are not allowed to declare whatever it is they believe but you are.

Seems to me that you are coming from the standpoint as them so you can only be as wrong as you believe them to be.

Why can't there be room for all faiths in this world?

Happy Christmas (I prefer Happy rather than Merry)

I beleive that everyone is intitled to believe what they want, whatever it may be. But why should I change everything I've done all my life to accomodate everyone from somewhere else? They don't go out of there way to change the laws & ways overseas to accomodate me!!

Subject: RE: BS: Merry Christmas!!

Of course - even though you are completly incorrect - as without Christ we would still have a number of winter solstice holidays to choose among - but that's okay, because you are standing up for what you believe in, and it's okay to fight in a non-physical manner.

You have amply demonstrated your belief by coming into a conversational area in a confrontational manner with a statement seemingly designed to inflame. But hey, Peace on Earth Good Will to All!

I am not at all concerned about the status of various foreign religions. I live in the US, it is still predominatly Christian and therefore, MERRY/HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

To others, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanza, etc.

For the non-believers, not to worry about something that is nonexistant.

Thanks, Nina!

Nina, relax. You're right, "they" couldn't care less about offending you or anyone else, but think about it ... can anyone really "take God out of everything"??

It is interesting though, how ridiculing and condemning religious/spiritual beliefs and those who practice them has become such an accepted, popular, politically correct sport. And at the same time, anyone who dares to belittle or even question atheism or atheists better look out ... it's Lock'n Load.

It was the kids that used to awake and salute the morn, I'd usually been helping Santa to see off the mince pies and brandy. One memorable Christmas morn, 3 yr old Alison got up at the crack of doom, and opened all the presents- ALL the presents, hers, Tom's, ours, the ones meant for other people. Had a wonderful time.

We sent a lot of thankyous saying "Dear ..., Thank you for the lovely gift."

Happy celebration, Guest Nina, and don't forget that christians came on the scene over 5000 years after people had started celebrating the middle of winter. Not to mention the rebirth of spring. Funny that the religious lot never got a handle on midsummer, though...

Well, as far as I know, those who celebrate(d) the solstice were/are a "religious lot" too, Paul. Of a non-Christian stripe.

Litha (or Midsummer, June 24) became the Feast of St John the Baptist after Europe was Christianized - an important holiday especially in French-speaking countries.

Just as Aug 2nd, ie Lammas (or "Loaf-Mass", the first harvest) became the day when the Eucharist loaves for the year were baked (ie from the first wheat harvested), and blessed by the Christian priests.

That's what I like, Nina ; a good agressive "up yours " to celebrate the birth of your saviour. Try emulating the man of peace, why don't ya? All you zealots, christians, jews, muslims, etc. ruin the world. Here's an idea from a reformed christian: take a little time to feel some love for those that believe differently than you. It's a huge brotherhood of man out there. Celebrate our differences, I promise you'll feel better.

It's amazing the number of people out there all too ready to take offence at someone wishing them well at this time of year, whatever the religious or secular motivation. I love this season and wish everyone the Christmas they wish themselves.

As may be, Cluin, but the thread startrd off as a rant against other people who don't believe in the christian christmas fairy story.

And to guestA in America the Christian religion is the foremost of the foreign religions imported from Europe to your shores. Before that it was imported to our shores here in Britain and to make it palatable to the natives they let them hold on to their old holidays bit gave them new names and pretended that they were really events im the christian story.

The sensible people just get on and enjoy a party at the darkest time of the year while the Zealots go on saying it's a reflection of the one truth they are spouting.

I don't much care for Nina's style, but there is some validity in her point. In any number of threads I have seen my atheist/agnostic friends ridicule those of us who have some sort of theistic view on the world. It does seem that it is OK for folks to ridicule and attack Christians while the reverse is not allowed and is attacked.

A large percentage of this, IMO, is due to fundamentalist Christians and their need to witness and proselytize. It is also due to the fact that Christianity was the religion of the Europeans who colonized the US, Africa, and much of the Middle East. As the world has moved past this age, the resentment of imposed religion has surfaced.

Whatever the cause, let this Celtic Catholic Christian (whatever that means ...... actually I have a pretty good idea what it means but that is another thread) wish you all the blessings of this world. When I say that, I mean no offense to anyone, rather that I would like you to know that I beleive this is a season of joy at the birth of my saviour, and I wish you all the blessings that brings to me. I celebrate my holiday, and yours. It is a season, despite the commercial crap, in which we all look forward to the lengthening days, to the warming of the Earth Mother, to the beauty that will be ours to behold again. I believe this is the gift from God. Whatever you believe to be true, I celebrate this rebirth with you.

Peace,

Mick

And a Merry Christmas to those who can accept the wish as given in good will and non-judgment. It is an expression of what I believe, and offered in love. If you believe something else, or find the whole issue of faith offensive, then of all people you can understand how your attacks on Christians without any regard to the sincerity of individuals is offensive as well.

Howzabout just wishing each other well with the hope that we can find more understanding and common ground in the New Year?

I hope that as we look forward to a brand-new, not-yet-totally-scewed-up Year that we can all do our best not to mess this one up as badly as we have in 2005. And yes, we all have messed it up in our own way. Me included...

Have a wonderful over-commercialised Christian concept of a Pagan festival, everyone.

Why don't I let this idea ruin my holidays anymore?

1. No one owns the seasons, or the reasons to celebrate. No one ever did. I'm free to celebrate whenever, however and Whomever I like. The Oak King/Holly King thing is just fine by me. So is Jesus. I love 'em all!

2. No one dictates how I decide to honour the season (or not). In the past when the commercialism really got to me I'd leave the TV off, stay away from the malls, and make my own gifts. This year, I'm finding that it doesn't bother me one way or the other. OThers seem to enjoy it -- so live and let live. I do as I please anyway, why get all negative?

3. Any excuse for a holiday, for a party, for getting together with significant others and exchanging gifts and good cheer, for helping those less fortunate is just fine by me too!

Merry Christmas, everyone.

For those who do not celebrate Christmas, receive the good wishes that come with those words, but don't interpret them as anything but good wishes for you, for that is indeed what they are.   And for those of you who celebrate other holidays/holy days, I hope on those days you will extend good wishes/blessings to me in the same spirit. Even if I do not happen to celebrate your holy days, I know that for you they represent something deeply meaningful, and I honor and respect that. If I choose to educate myself about your holy days, I know that I will be richer for it.

If we can be happy for others in their time of rejoicing, think of how many more opportunities we will have for happiness.

The sooner we can begin to accept diversity, and honor it, the better off we'll all be.

Warmest wishes for all that is good in this season,
KT
