22 Dec 05 - 06:09 AM (#1632761) Subject: RE: Plough Monday celebrations UK From: GUEST,Gadaffi The Mepal Molly Men will be doing their tour of Fenland villages during the day and the evening, usually finishing at the Three Pickerels at Sutton. (contact Steve Bramble) The Balsham Ploughmen will be taking round their plough in the village from 6 p.m. onwards. This is essentially a tour of parties at private houses, but they also visit the two pubs in the village: The Bell and The Black Bull. (contact Jan Ellam) The Cambridge Morris Men go out during the day as Molly dancers, usually starting at the Grapevine at Comberton at 11 a.m. and finishing in Cambridge Market Place, before adjourning to Balsham for the evening where they perform Cotswold. (contact John Jenner) Ouse Washes have a separate day, usually the Saturday before or Saturday after Whittlesey. (contact Gordon Phillips) The Hinckley Bullockers also go round on the Saturday of Plough Monday weekend. (contact Tony Ashton) Fenstanton celebrate Plough Monday beginning with a plough blessing at the church at 6 p.m., then a tour of the town. (contact Fenstanton Morris dancers) Wype Doles also perform longsword in the Whittlesey area on or around Plough Monday itself. (contact Brian Kell) I believe some of the other teams who home in on Whittlesey on the Saturday also hold some kind of Plough Monday celebration, e.g. Good Easter molly (Simon Ritchie), Pig Dyke Molly (Tony Forster), Old Glory (?). The Leicester Morris Men revived the Sproxton plough play some years ago. |
