I heard a bit of song on car radio which was fascinating because of the words, the feel, the singer-everything had me in a "Must Know More Mood." The DJ said the singer/composer Mary Go Shay (Yup-that's the name) has yet to become well known. Missed some of the words-about a girl accepted by DQ & Nuns in Blue Jeans. I'm nuts about the singer and the Blusey, heart wrenching vocal. Who can enlighten me? Mickey 191 |

24 Dec 05 - 04:24 PM (#1634726) Subject: Lyr Add: DRAG QUEENS IN LIMOUSINES (Mary Gauthier) From: Peace DRAG QUEENS IN LIMOUSINES Mary Gauthier I hated high school. I prayed it would end. The jocks and their girls, it was their world. I didn't fit in. Mama said, "Baby, it's the best school that money can buy. Hold your head up. Be strong. C'mon, Mary, try." I stole mama's car on a Sunday and left home for good, Moved in with my friends in the city in a bad neighborhood. Charles was a dancer. He loved the ballet, And Kimmy sold pot and read Kerouac and Hemingway. CHORUS: Drag queens in limousines, Nuns in blue jeans, Dreamers with big dreams, All took me in. Charlie and I flipped burgers to cover the rent, And bourbons at happy hour for 35 cents. One day before work, we got drunk and danced in the rain. They fired us both. They said, "Don't y'all come back here again." CHORUS My dad went to college, and he worked for the state. He never quit nothing and he wanted me to graduate. My brother and sister both play in the marching band. They tell me they miss me, but I know they don't understand. Sometimes you got do what you gotta do, And hope that the people you love will catch up with you. Yea drag queens in limousines, Nuns in blue jeans, Dreamers with big dreams, Poets and AWOL marines, Actors and bar flies, Writers with dark eyes, Drunks that philosophize, These are my friends. The site I got lyrics from has more pop-ups than a horse has hairs. |

Although Mary now resides in New England, her music traditions come from down on the bayou in Louisianna. Riding that line of not-quite-folk/not-quite-country, more of a "smart country" stlye along the lines of Steve Earle and John Prine also categorizes as country-fried-folk more lyrics here--http://www.marygauthier.com/lyrics.html no horse feathers there. |
