30 Dec 05 - 02:06 PM (#1637517) Subject: Radio Britfolk Addiction for 2006 From: Lizzie Cornish OK…This is.....A LONG POST WARNING!! ;0) So...my New Year's Resolution is to become Seriously Addicted To Radio Britfolk! And I've never looked forward to a resolution so MUCH!! :0) It all started a few weeks ago…and now it's starting to take over my life! You see, I tuned in to Radio Britfolk last month to listen to Phil Snell's interview with Duncan McFarlane in his new 'Influences' show. Phil talks to various musicians about the music and artists who have influenced their lives, their writing, their songs etc….and well…I was hooked instantly! http://www.radiobritfolkhome.co.uk/HomePage.aspx I mean…I can now sit here in my lounge in Sidmouth and 'design' my own radio station!! Sometimes I play Tim Moon's show first…then I listen to Phil…sometimes it's t'other way round…and yes…I know you'll tell me I need to 'get out more'…but WHY would I want to get out when I can stay in and listen to these guys and all this brilliant music!!!! Jacey Bedford's programme this week is about Christmas songs from both sides of the Atlantic, her Christmas Special last week was beautiful by the way! You can still catch it if you hunt around on the site…I think you have to pay a small subscription for this, but it's well worth it…and you've got instant access to all the previous shows. Usually there are 3 or 4 different shows going on every week….Les Barker is just about to start talking to Tim Moon, as I tip-tap this right now…and my ears have been flooded with Moon Shadows from both Kate Rusby and Cat Stevens. Maddy Prior has been Kerchinging away and now sweet Les is about to make me curl up with giggles. I saw him at Abbotsbury this year, with Show of Hands and he made us all fall around on the grass on that hot summer's day! That man should be running my country..he'd cheer us all up in no time at all…Bring back humour BIGTIME and start with Les Barker I say!! ;0) Oh…Les is giving us a story all about 'A Zebra Called Spot' now…I think they should play Les's CDs in all hospital wards…people would get better in half the time, thus saving the country MILLIONS of pounds whilst creating an intensely happy population again! ;0) And I've still got Phil to listen to, he's talking to Mundy Turner about their influences, this week….and shhhhh….I've heard that El Greko is going to be on as well! Yup! Our very own George Papavgeris! I shall be glued to that one…but don't tell him, else he may become unbearable to live with! ;0)(just joking George!) And then there's a Yorkshire Dales Christmas Concert to hear…and as I now am totally in love with Yorkshire, after going to Otley Festival…well…tune me in to that one!! Oh dear me…Les is telling us that he's going to a Lemming Reunion…but apparently he's the only one there..just him and five million chairs!! ;0) And I've still got to listen to the Britfolk Billboard….and last week I heard Ralph McTell talking to Tim…and now Tim's playing some Morris Dancing music, complete with traffic sounds and people chattering away…blimey…at this rate, I may never leave my lounge again! ;0) Well, I'd best disappear as Richard Thompson and John Kirkpatrick are both playing now…and I'm finding it hard to concentrate! ;0) Ooh…they've started to rock'n' folk all over everywhere! But hang on… did I mention 'Hotspots' with Kate Bramley? I didn't did I!!! And she has a Seasonal Special too…and I have friends coming down tomorrow for New Year's Eve and I've got toooooo much music to listen to now….I know…I could get them to make their own dinner whilst I just sit hear 'plugged in'. I could wave merrily at them from time to time! Perhaps if I listen all this evening, maybe I could almost be at the end of the Yorkshire Carol Concert before that clock strikes 12.00 o'clock on Saturday night. I guess they'll want to be boring and walk down to the sea to watch the fireworks over the ocean and join in with everyone…but WHY would you want to do that when you can curl up with the candles and listen to Kirsty McGee or Yorkshire Carols?!! ;0) On the other hand I could go down with them and at the Stroke of Midnight I could dash home and tune in to Britfolk again…A sort of Folk Cinderella. AND…when I listened to DMcF's interview, I also discovered, on that week's Tim Moon show, the gorgeous music of Peter Knight…Oh..you so have to listen to Peter's music…I'm telling you….it would put those stripes right back on Les Barker's zebra! The piece I heard was called 'Betsy Bell and Mary Grey' from his new 'Too Late For Shadows' CD...you can hear some of it on the link below, but it actually goes on for about 9 minutes..Stunning! I used to promise each New Year's Eve that I'd lose weight…eat sensibly….exercise…be better behaved....all that truly boring stuff…but not any longer….Now you just have to give me William Kimber…Tim, Phil, Jacey and Co…and I'm away with the faeries!! EEK…..WHAT has happened to me???? Am I growing old quickly…..or younger ecstatically…or is it that I've discovered some of the best music in the world?!!! I'm away to listen to Mundy Turner now……this is such a great idea for a show Phil, it's really interesting to find out what makes people 'tick' Ooh..they're singing Lonnie Donnegan's 'Battle of New Orleans', which apparently was written by a history teacher for his pupils….I know all the words to this song…I loved it, it was the first song I ever knew all the words to off by heart, as it conjured up an entire film in my head! Not that I'm old enough to know this song of course, you understand…;0) "Well in 1814 we took a little trip along with Col Jackson down the Mighty Mississip…we took a little bacon and we took a little beans….." Oh!..now that's a GREAT live version!! I'm going to have to find time to come back in here and tell you more about Mundy Turner…I've a feeling in my bones!! They are so interesting to listen to..just wait till you hear Catherine singing all about a blouse! You won't believe she could remember all those words just off the top of her head! And Sandy Denny is in there and now they're talking about John Mayall and Cat Stevens...and.... So...LOADS of thanks to all the people who put Britfolk together every week…it's very much appreciated down here in Sidmouth..I am learning so much about even more new (to me), wonderful music. A Very Happy New Year Guys!!!!

You should also listen to the BBC "Listen Again" features, "Voices at the Door" I found out about from a Mudcat thread. Mike Hardings own programme is on every week, plus many more. My problem is that with dial up access, nobody can get hold of me any more. Anyway..they've all gone home now, so I'm listening to 'Forgotten Carols' again, didn't quite make it to the end last time...and someone mentioned on the 'Yorkshire Dales Forgotten Carols' thread that there are some intersting 'bits' at the end of this programme. AND there is a lady singing on here who has the MOST stunning voice!! I don't know who she is though...and bearing in mind that this choir only had two rehearsals before this recording, well...it's quite amazing and very impressive! Love all the stories in between as well, especially the bit where Mary breaks her news to Joseph... And yes Richard...I agree. I think that Britfolk is doing something extremely useful for folk music and musicians, quite unique in fact! I also didn't realise that you could put your own music on there until someone mentioned it above. (Don't panic though Stevie, I don't sing so you're saved!!) ;0) Lizzie :0) |

Look: Just click on 'Track Listings'...Les Barker is on it, doing his glorious poem about Dachshunds! It'll make your eyes cross and stream with water at the same time that poem! Anyway...the really good news is that all New Year's Resolutions that are made at the very start of a New Moon always remain true!! I'm not making up this, honestly! And so...I've another 364 days to tune in to Radio Britfolk and by the end of this year I shall be so hopelessly addicted that there may be no hope left for me!! Good to see Kate Rusby and John McCusker on his show as well, even though they only got to sing one song, and all the others had numerous slots. Hurrumph! I'm listening to 'The Billboard' at present. Miranda Sykes has just started playing her 'Lincolnshire Song'...from her 'Don't Look Down' CD. That is such a beautiful song, it was written by her Dad, all about the county that he loves so deeply. And when you listen it's like watching Rolf Harris filling in a blank canvas, and when she's finished she's left behind the most wonderful vision of Lincolnshire...even the World War II pilots are in there, flying back home and heaving a sigh of relief as they see the outline of the Cathedral...We've been lucky enough to see Miranda so many times lately as she's playing with Show of Hands these days. If ever you get the chance..make sure you see her! ....and each time you click on the 'Billboard' button the music comes up in a different format, so that it changes every single time. SUCH fun!! I know, I need to get out more again...I was normal till I came to live in Sidmouth and 'something' happened! ;0) AND...Radio Britfolk has....a messageboard! How COOL is that then? A radio station with it's own messageboard!!!! But you have to become a member first for £5 a month to get on it...so I'm just going to disappear shortly and sort that out! ;0) Steve Tilston is on now! This is such GREAT fun! And I've just pressed it again and this time I've got The New Victory Band, which is going to be followed by Napper & Bliss (I only heard them the other day for the first time! I never thought that a cappella singing would interest me much but once again, I am so surprised! Andy Kershaw, Britfolk's patron, says on his message on the 'home page' that the purpose of radio is to bring people not just what they think they want, but what they don't even yet KNOW they want to hear...and I suppose that's how I feel about it all. I'm hearing music that I'd never have listened to a few year's back. Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher are singing 'The Mary Ellen Carter' at present and I'm not 'running away' in the slightest as I would have once upon a time..in fact I'm sitting here joining in! ;0) And now those Hissyfit lasses have started and their voices are just so pure and rich. Someone said on another thread that 'they make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck'.....and I know what he means...and hey! I'm a girl!!! And that music belongs to Mike Harding, which has bowled me right over in utter amazement! Straight from Jacey's Christmas show, when she played Artisan's version of his 'Christmas Eve 1914' song, then learning about his song 'Bomber's Moon' and then getting to hear it thanks to LL above being so kind and sending it to me....and finally getting to hear it and sitting here in stunned silence as I heard the most extraordinary and beautiful song, dedicated to Mike's father...and I guess the right thing to do is to start a new thread about Mike's music and see what happens on that....so I'll put my thoughts on 'Bomber's Moon' on a new thread called 'Mike Harding's Beautiful Music'..... He's enough to make the fizz in James's 'shaken but not stirred' martini give up all the effort of bubbling! No WAY would James ever be able to compete with Peter's guitar...and Boy!....can this chap play the guitar!! All he'd have to do is start with the opening chords of 'Africa 65' and that would be it! Miss Moneypenny would drop her dictation pad immediately and be rendered completely unnecessary in an instant!! ;0) Do you know that Peter GAVE UP folk music for ages?! He DID! Kate said so! I've gone from not knowing about so many artists just over the past few weeks to adding a whole pile of new ones to my list of 'CDs to get'....Radio Britfolk is starting to cost me a FORTUNE!!! ;0) Anyway...YY...if you can get to Beverley, go! Because, listening to what I'm listening to right now, you won't be disappointed in the slightest! AND....did you know that Janet has worked with, among many others, Coope Boyes & Simpson! I know!!! My latest heroes...and there she is, leading the choir for the Armistice Day concerts! Look what I found: "Russell, Janet Reknowned performer and member of Sisters Unlimited with a voice that takes on many colours and ranges expressively over traditional and contemporary subjects and styles. Janet has recently been leading the Roses and Thorns Choir in performances of Armistice Day written by Coope Boyes and Simpson" How about that then? Everyone's intertwined aren't they..if you know what I mean. Anyway, Janet's an absolute gem to have found! AND, going back to Mike Harding's 'Bomber's Moon' CD, you can listen to a track called 'January Man' from it on the link below. It's a really descriptive song...all about the seasons and how they slowly dawn, month by month. It's written by Dave Goulder, I'll use Mike's words from his CD to explain it, although I expect you all know it. From Mike: "Written by Dave Goulder, a one time foot plate man in the good old days of steam trains, who was also a keen walker and climber. He left his hometown of Nottingham to run a climbing centre in the Torridon Hills in Scotland and it was there, he says, that he saw for the first time through his townie eyes the year passing month by month through the seasons. Dave now runs courses in dry-stone walling but is still singing and writing songs. This I believe is one of the most perfect songs ever written." I know Barry Lister Barbara!...Not terribly well admittedly, but he helps with Sidmouth Folk Week, and well....I had a quick chat with him not so long ago. A lovely man...AND he always gets a mention from Show of Hands when they sing any songs that he's led them too. In fact, just last month he was being mentioned at The Manor Pavillion when SoH were there and Phil Beer told us that it was Barry who got them singing 'Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy'....there you go...'A Barry Lister Story'.....Good lad is Barry, as are all those other lads and lasses working so hard for Sidmouth again this year. There is just SO much to learn though! But what makes me so cross is that my friends just stare at me blankly when I mention all these musicians who are all so talented and yet so many people know nothing about them...It makes me truly, madly, deeply fuming at times! I just have to tell you what else I've learnt because of the 'Best I Ever Saw' programme whose guest this week is Steve Tilston. Well, Steve only got to see Bob Dylan because a friend of his, who had a ticket was ill and so he got to go instead....and then a short time later he also saw Bert Jansch..(at that point my brain went "Who?"..worrying isn't it!) Anyway....after seeing these two chaps Steve was well on the path to knowing what he wanted to do...I won't tell you anymore though.... But it was Bert that got me searching, as I liked his voice and the song he played made me sit up and listen, all about the 'needle of death' so very sad, and suddenly I thought "Uh Oh! I think I should somehow know who Bert Jansch is shouldn't I?"...so I googled him up and here he is: http://www.bertjansch.com/ And not only did I read that Keith Richards thinks he's great and Neil Young said he's as good a guitarist as Jimi Hendrix was, but Steve was talking about John Renbourn too....and then I read about Pentangle and the only thing I can remember about them was their theme tune from the series 'Take Three Girls'...do you remember that one? (I was VERY little!) ;0) "Skip into London Town...see the people.." and now I'm sitting here with that song going around my head like mad! That is people tend to confuse the first person narrator of his songs with the man himself. He sings about the world from the point of view of all kinds of oddballs, downbeats and losers. Very often they feel the world has been unjust. A good example is the dark humour of "Mississippi" on "Love and Theft". It is pretty deadpan, but really hilarious when you start to visualise the narrator. There are lots of songs like that. It is part of the fun of Dylan. You never really know exactly how much he identifies with the narrator - if at all. |

It is "gewöhnungsbedürftig". Literally translated, it means something like, "takes some getting used to." I thought about that with Bob Dylan. He isn't Pavarotti for sure. He can take somse getting used to. It is easy to understand why so many people do not like his voice. If you can stand it though, it certainly can carry an extraordinary range of songs and styles. On "Love and Theft" he had a go at being a swing style singer on several tracks. For many of us it worked. Of course, it isn't and never will be for everyone. I always try to appreciate the craft of those whom I can't actually like. I did not really like the Allman Brothers much (crap songs). They were mighty players though, I could always hear that. Reading "Chronicles" also brought Bob Dylan the folk singer a lot closer to me. So many people assumed he was singing about himself all the time - and very much of it, he wasn't. |

I have to confess that if I'd heard them without knowing it was Bob, I'd never have guessed it was him. But....having said that...he still didn't appeal to me. The only song of his where I've loved his voice was on 'Lay Lady Lay'....otherwise I've preferred the cover versions. Oh heavens! I'm completely under the spell of the 'Billboard' I keep playing it....it's another great way to get people's music out to people like me...'out here' Today I've discovered Anne Lister ....gorgeous mellow voice! And she's singing a lovely song called 'Dante's Church' Here she is: http://www.annelister.com/ And Dave Rolfe...a fantastic guitarist! Never, ever heard of him before...or Anne above..but now I have! And the track that followed his 'George Brabazon' was 'Over The Hills'...John Tams song, but this time sung by Take Two...and it's excellent! And Hilary James and Simon Mayor! They were playing at Exeter recently, but I had no idea how good they were...I remember seeing their gig photo, where Hilary was playing a Mandobass, which has to be one of the most unusual instruments I've seen! Having only yesterday found Dave Gibb through Woven Wheat Whispers I've realised what a superb idea it is! In a matter of hours I went from never having heard of Dave, to owning his 'Feeling Good...Looking Better' CD. It took just 20 minutes to download it and we've turned it into a 'proper CD' now, cover and all. Been listening to it this afternoon...and I LOVE it...and so does my daughter.
