BS: Raglan Road Pub at Walt Disney World

Just may have found the most expensive Guinness, at least in the U.S.

Ragland Road is a new "attraction" at Walt Disney World's Pleasure Island - it's "night spot" complex. It's ok looking - certainly interesting inside, the foods good and not too pricey even for Disney, but I ordered a pint of Guinness and received a 12 "pint" glass. When I questioned the server, he said that Disney guests prefer smaller portions of beer. The glass was a standard looking 20oz pint glass, just much smaller. And it cost - wait for it - $6.75.

Here in Orlando, at the regular Irish and English pubs, a pint (20oz) of Guinness currently runs around $3.50 - $4.00. The Disney "pint" averages out to $11.25 for 20oz.

Can anyone beat that price?

Happy New Year everyone.

Well, hey, we used to pay 15 cents for a Hamms "shorty" in Wisconsin - but that was 1970. I was pleased to find that a pint cost about a buck in Poland last summer. Good beer, too.
So, go to Poland or Wisconsin, not Dizzyland.

Just refused the allure of Walt Disney Hong Kong, so sorry I can't add anything. Getting the kids past the sign, claiming it was a copy site, was a major achievement in itself!

Definition of an Irishman?

An efficient machine for turning Guinness into urine.

You were expecting a bargain from Disney World?

The disneyland ads on tv are bad enough. Don't think any one seriously visits the place expecting NOT to be ripped off. It has a name for getting you in the place then fleecing you. Managed to give it a wide berth so far. Mind you had to bribe the kids with a bike. But I'd rather they exercised than throw money down the drain all in the name of a fluffy mouse.

I love the $2.00 plastic ponchos at Disney World that suddenly get bumped up to $5.00 when it starts raining.

Did you manage to find the guitar shop at Pleasure Island ? I'll bet the prices there were sky high too.

I can get those ponchos at my local dollar store in 2-packs. That's right, 50 cents each!

I should add that the $2.00 version has a Mickey Mouse printed on it. I wouldn't want anyone to feel ripped off.

Well when I worked at Disney (Main Street U.S.A., selling mickey watches) the ponchos stayed the same price no matter what.

I've been in the guitar shop, but I don't play guitar, so I can't give you an idea of how expensive things are. Actually, Disney has a track record of not raising the prices of non-Disney merchandise. That's not to say it isn't marked up, but at least not all that much. When I worked there, Disney had an official policy to keep the prices of regular stuff relatively low since they didn't sell that much of the stuff anyway.

Shops like the guitar shop don't need to pay for themselves. They're there mainly as window dressing and browsing opportunities. I remember years ago that the German pavillion sold only about 5 Hummels a week, a tiny number considering they saw some 50,000 people a day walking by them.

Downtown Disney has one place I do occasionally shop - the only Virgin Music Megastore in the area. Fair prices, and really the only large store in the area for CDs, DVDs and the such.

What would Patrick Kavanagh make of all this?
Him scraping for a living ( and the price of a pint) on and around this very same street - and now multibillionaires making a profit out of his creation. Ain't life funny.

Tried to go in there for lunch, but it wasn't open, but at those prices I'm glad I didn't.

RIP OFF RAGLAN ROAD,

I am originally from Dublin, Ireland.
When I first came to the States you could only get Guinness in a US pint glass
Which is 16oz, then a few years ago The Guinness Import Company supplied Irish bars with Irish Pint glasses which are 20oz, most Irish bars now serve Guinness in 20oz pint glasses, just like home.

Imagine my shock when I asked the bartender at Raglan Road for a pint of Guinness,
He gave me this small glass with I guess has 12 or 14 oz in it,
I told him that this was neither a US nor an Irish Pint measure; he said a lot of people have complained. "But it's only a few ounces less" he said.

I know it's Disney and you expect to get ripped off etc etc etc.
I expected to pay maybe a buck or 2 more for a "PINT",
But what I didn't expect was to be screwed over with a small glass made to look like a real pint.

In Ireland the government brought out a weights and measures law to prevent the public from being ripped off by unscrupulous Bar Owners.
Pubs in Ireland must use government stamped 20oz Pint glasses.

Maybe we need a similar law in the US.

Fiddlers Green in Winter Park 20oz pint of Guinness $4.50
Raglan Road 12oz non-pint of Guinness $6.75

c-f: Not only frightening, but begging for the counter-reply "This Disney guest prefers the word pint to mean a pint, that way he can order what he wants."

The original reply should have been "Disney prefers to SERVE smaller portions, the rip-off effect is an incidental bonus." but telling the truth isn't all that fashionable, is it?

Disney employees go through training (or at least used to) that teaches one how to answer the most obvious question without making the guest feel like an idiot. There are other official responses as well. My guess is that was the official response.

When I worked in the Magic Kingdom I was asked the following question at least once a week: "When is the 3 o'clock parade?" You try answering that with a pleasant answer...

By the way, If any of you ever do come to Orlando (for Disney or Universal Studios or a convention), please look me up. The first pint (20oz) or whatever you want is on me as one of the local pubs.

Maybe somebody could sue them,
If a bar only sells Pepsi and you ask for a Coke,
they have to tell you they only have Pepsi,
otherwise Coke can sue them,
When you ask for a "PINT" of Guinness and they dont give you a "PINT"
maybe that is against the law?

After Ireland joined the European Union,
The EU made Ireland change to the Metric system,
So now we use Kilometers and Kilos
But the Irish said that their "PINT" was sacred and we could not imagine asking our local barman for liter of Guinness, it just didn't sound right.
So the EU caved in and the "PINT" was saved.

Now Disney has done what the EU could not!
They messed with

OUR PINT

It's the end of the world as we know it!

Well when Disney puts it's next theme park outside of Cork, you can go after them.

By the way - not everything was too expensive. A very good size potion of fish and chips at "Cook's of Dublin," the outside eatery next to Raglan Road went for $6.95. Not too bad, and even though the service is standing in lines like at McDonalds, they batter and fry up the fish while you wait so it's nice and hot and crispy.

By the way, a Guinness t-shirt in the gift shop is $28.

I wasn't able to eat my meal as our young family was threatened and tossed from our meager table by a vulgar patron. I threw my greasy overpriced meal in the trash. The manager offered a belated apology. Wow.

DWorld is fun, but they do try to shake every last buck out of your pocket. The worst scam is the Disney dollars. Many people leave the place with quite a few still in their pockets, now unredeemable paper.

But I did have one surprisingly pleasant drinking experience; after my family returned home, leaving me to the "bizness" part of the trip, I went to one of the open air bars and ordered scotch. The drink was small and over-priced, but I was feeling amiable and gave the guy a big tip. When I ordered another, he poured out a tumbler-full for the same price! They seem like robots, but they're human after all.

So this is all from the adults point of view.

My mother took my sister & me to DisneyLand 50 yrs ago (8&9yr olds). It was the best time we'd ever had at an event theme/amusment park. Never forgot the experience. I don't know if we were ripped-off but it was well worth the time & cost. Course we were't gooing for the drinks either!
Always wanted to take the kids there when they were young, even knowing that it's inflated, never had the opportunity, time or money all at the same time.
