Dave Bryant - Wake - 14 January 2006

04 Jan 06 - 08:27 AM (#1641043)
Subject: Dave Bryant - Wake
From: Essex Girl

Just a general reminder that Daves' wake takes place on 14th January at The Tudor Barn Eltham from about 1.30pm till closing time. Short "service" followed by as many musicians/singers as want to perform. This is an all day event and we are running a buffet american supper style. Bring all your stories, songs and anecdotes. Everyone who knew Dave is welcome.
Linda

Hi Linda
I won't be able to get down for the Wake, however I will have a glass or two whilst you're having it. Hope everything is not being too hard for you, I know Dave had a great many friends and admirers who should be able to give a great day in his memory. I'll be thinking of you

Take Care

Linda - I fully intend to be there for some of the afternoon - We have Craig Morgan Robson in the evening and I am 'Honour Bound' to attend !
A Post Code for Tudor Barn might be of assistance for those of us from the other side of 'The Smoke'

Hi Linda,

Rats! I'll miss it by three days as I'm in the UK on 10/11 January then have to return to Belgium.

I will certainly raise a glass of Belgium's finest in absentio to the honour of Dave's memory and to you.

Peace

Hi Linda,

My attendance will depend on how things go medically.

I am booked in for an Angioplasty at St. Thomas's Hospital on Wednesday 11th January, and will certainly not be out and about for 48 hours..

It's cutting it fine, but, if I can get there, rest assured I will, guitar in hand.

I'll confirm on Friday 13th (scary).

Just trying to put the final arrangements to bed. The bar upstairs will be open from about 3.30pm. Before then you'll have to bring your drinks up from the downstairs bar. Have asked the landlord to have plenty of beer on tap. Folkmob are pulling all the stops out to set the hall up on Friday evening. If anyone needs accommodation, I have the caravan and plenty of floor space. If you're driving you can always leave your car in my road and catch a bus (practically door to door) to the barn. What a wonderful time it was, and a totally appropriate celebration of Dave's life. I think the greatest testimony to Dave was to simply look around the room and see so many people whose lives he'd touched, and who had obviously heard about the event and thought, "I'm gonna be there." Speaks more than a thousand words.
It was great to meet some people we hadn't seen for about 20 years, and some who were just names on Mudcat!
Thank you so much Linda, for organising it all and giving us the opportunity to say goodbye to an old mate. God bless you.

Much love, Dave & Eileen.

What an impressive lineup of talent. and it all went so well, as has been said Dave would have enjoyed it. but then his not being there was the raison d'etre.
So I've decided that I'm going to have my wake before I go, so that I too can enjoy the evening. Mind you I wouldn't get so many people come, but if it's even half as good as last night I'll be happy.

I'd just like to add my thanks to everyone who helped make yesterday such a wonderful event, especially the people who made it happen in the first place, and Barrie for MC'ing for over 8 hours (and for persuading John Foreman to sing). Plus the unexpected and unrehearsed combinations of singers from all over the place. It reminded me exactly why I instantly so loved the folk scene when I first encountered it. What a fantastic day and a wonderful way to sing Dave off to the wings. Well done to Linda & Barrie & all who made this possible, thank you all.

Wish I hadn't had to leave before the end, but am very glad I managed to get a 5 minute workshop organised to sing 'All around my Spirit' by Kathy Lowe, with extra verses written by Lynne Paris & Rosie Marshall.

Having grabbed various 'Girlies' from around the room & had a quick run-through in the fine drizzle outside, I found it quite spooky that we all turned out to be Mudcatters! We were: myself, Herga Kitty, Moses, Nessie (as was 'la Inglesa'?), billybob, JudeL & Essex Girl. We managed to make a good noise between us :-)

Missed Dipsodeb and Dave Masterson, though I met billybob at last. So many mudcatters present, what a wonderful 'voice' we have here - thanks to Max!

What more can I add? We sang in the car all the way home to Walton on the Naze, then sat for an hour wih large brandy's and talked about the day. How wonderful to meet at last, all the mudcatters that supported Dave through his illness, fiendships that I am sure will last for a long time, so Dave has brought so many people together and yesterday brought many old friends together for the first time for many years.
Thanks Hils for getting us girlies together for that great song, makes me want to sing again, as I have not for such a long time.
I was so pleased to see Breezy again, we will get to St Albans soon!
Well done Linda and Peter and Barry (how did he manage that singers list)and well done Dave, bless him, he gave us a day to remember

A great day. Dave would indeed have loved it. I kept wishing that he could suddenly leaping out from a corner crying "Fooled you all", and reveal it was all a trick to bring together a crowd of friends who needed to be gathered together for some purpose - a bit like Oz in Auf Wiedersehen Pet.

There was some brilliant music too. Some of the best from Mudcatters too. That "5 minute workshop" contribution was one of the best. I've got a photo of it in my mobile phone, but I haven't managed to download it yet.

I hope someone was taping the show. They could stick it in a time capsule as a record of the kind of stuff that has emerged from our generation, outside the headline acts.

I missed John Foreman's appearance though - that's a shame. There's another great man.

As they always say at good family funerals "Why do we have to wait until we're dead before we get together like this?"

I had a wonderful time though, and have given a new home to 'Larry the Singing Lobster' - the raffle prize to end all raffle prizes! Thank you for the fantastic time and the opportunity to 'send him home proper'....

It was incredible seeing the 32yr old picture taken in the very room we were standing in, and even more incredible to see just how good looking Dave was in his younger days!

Thanks to everyone who made it such a memorable day.

Just about managed Paxton's "Rambling Boy" despite lump in throat.

An amazing turnout - some people I hadn't seen in decades plus a goodly number of Mudcatters. The Coincidentally Mudcat Ladies' Chorus was awesome.

Sorry I missed John Foreman, but Lady L and #1 daughter both ill and in need of tlc (and we'd drunk the bar dry of draught bitter!).

So glad I went. Thanks to all who made it possible, and a glass raised to Dave, who made it necessary!

I'm so glad I was able to be there on Saturday for such a great day. A wonderful send-off.

Thanks to everyone who added their voices and reminiscences to make it such a special occasion.

Lovely to hear John Foreman at last.

Thanks to Barry for the fiddle accompaniment, for M/Cing and for keeping us in some semblance of order. And, of course, the sound-man who did a great job with so many different voices and instruments to cope with.

Hils, we MUST do the "5 minute workshop" again. Great fun even if the 5 minute rehearsal was somewhat damp. Who but Mudcatters would rehearse in the dark, in the cold, standing in the rain? You up for it girls? The song - not the rain! Next Mudgather then.

Scarey!Even more scarey the photo looks like my daughter now!!Hope my son in law does not see it ...you know what they say!
The photo of Dave at 21....well he looked like a film star!

He looked like a film star when I met him a few years ago.... but the star in question was Lassie!

I shall make you hate me now by saying that in 1974, I was 10 and had never heard of folk music!

The music for most of the day was taped and Richard (Fisheye) took many photos. There are a few photos on Dave Kenninghams website. My voice is still hoarse from the amount of people I spoke to.It was great seeing so many of Daves friends and family. A wonderful day. I hope to organise a reunion BBQ around Dave's birthday in June, following the usual format. I'll have to make the beer without Dave's instructions this year so keep your fingers crossed.

Well I'm really upset that I didn't know John Foreman was there, he was so much a part of the London folk scene when I was involved with it, and I still have a couple of his booklets.
Anyway I got home to Inverness airport today to find that Easy Jet have destroyed the top end of my guitar case, split at the top, dented at the bottom. takes some hard work to do that to a Martin flight case. My guitar seems to be OK, I just tightened up the strings and tuned it, and it sounds OK, will wait to see if anything moves in the next couple of days. This is something everybody dreads when they send a guitar into the hands of the airline baggage handler.
Back to the wake, it was lovely to see you all, and especially Heather who I hadn't seen since the days of the Fighting Cocks in Kingston upon Thames. The Mudcat Ladies Musical Magic Circle was fandabbidosy.

Sorry linda that I did not make the Wake - sounds like it was a good one

I went to Straw Bear, but my prime reason for going up there was to visit my Dad's grave, which I have not ever seen.

Whilst standing there I thought I would pay a brief tribute to the five persons who died in 2005

CHRIS GORNIAK:   Whose almost perfect rendition of Blessed Quietness" will leave a hiatus in the folk world.

RAY GENT: The quiet man of Good Easter Molly - lovely man.

RAY FROM ONGAR: Brilliant old guy, encouraged me lots, brilliant mouth organ player - will never be forgotten for his help thanks Ray

MIKE WATSON : of Maldon Greenjackets - invested many dances one of which i saw on New Years Day at Maldon Quay - again a lovely man, who shall be missed.

and last but not least

BIG MOUTH BRYANT: meant in the nicest possible way of course, Linda,
and I will certainly miss this guy.

My condolences to all families concerned.

Jo-Jo

Dic nihil sed bonum de mortuis. However....

The room layout and the PA sound were I think minor imperfections in a splendid memorial to a great chap, although some PA is necessary in that room when oriented like that. I think the layout for Brixton Bert was better.

Mind you, I take my hat off to anyone prepared to carry a PA from the nearest parking!

Fortunately no one had to carry the PA eqp it was kindly lent for the day by the Folk Mob who's resident folk Club is held at the Tudor barn every Weds evening.

I thought the sound was pretty good actually, considering the amount of different people who were performing quite quickly one after the other for a good 8hrs.

Hey Ho.

Just like to add our thanks for a great day. Too bad about Giock's guitar case. May I refer you to a Tom Paxton song on the subject... "Thankyou Republic Airlines." We thought the p.a. was pretty damn good actually. Considering the number of people who used it, and the variance in style and volume, Pat and Graham et al did a fine job! Could it have been something to do with the noise from the bar perchance? Anyway June 18th duly noted. TDL will be there!

We thought the PA was superb too, and we were sitting under the speakers!Brixton Berts night was good also but we prefered the seating etc this time. There is always noise at the bar, we are all guilty of that! But having the singers at the other end of the room enabled old friends to chat at the bar without drowning out the singers.
love to linda, Wendy and Billy xx
ps after the bar b q on june 18th all welcome at Walton for an event on the 24th!

Richard is intending to put them all on a cd, so watch thisnspace.Would love to come to Walton on 24th but unfortunately that weekend coincides with the Folkmob camp at Knockholt. Still I'll be up in Walton before that.
