New CD - Hissyfit: Fish Out of Water

From: Guy Wolff

Hello all . More Music from the northeast of Briton !!!! I was lucky enough to get a great cd at Christmas from our own Lindy Kelly and Hazle Richings . You will see the word clean written a ton of times below.. I cant think of higher praise .. I do hope Linda and Hazel will see this thread and talk a bit about who did what .. On the notes I didnt see who was playing the guitar for instance or who is singing high or low where .. and I want to know who wrote these great stories . The language is so good .I think much of the writting is Lindas and if so she needs to let us all know !! . Please do your self a favore and get a copy of this amazing CD .. All the best , Guy

                                                          Hissyfit
                                                 Fish Out Of Water
                                          Hazel Richings,       Linda Kelly
This is an album of accessible voice and great story telling.Clearity !!!

1) Northern Tide :
Opening the cd is clear voice and close interval singing that leads us into great story telling . A song of love for what is left on shore and the life found at sea . Just wonderful !!

2) North Cape Calling:
Opening with great rhythmic guitar and Strong male voice we hear a story of hard decisions to be made on stormy waters . The conter -voices of the chorus takes me by surprise . Concertina and Guitar weave the mood to a different place towards the end and we are left with the knowledge that a wrong move on the sea can cost a very high price .

3) Theipval :
What clean singing !! Nothing is put in the way of powerful voice and the sentiments of what is lost in war . Harmony sweet and clear makes the message even hit harder . Leaving the bones of the song so open takes real courage . Ending with "Its a Long way to Tipperary" was just stunning .

4) Broomlee Lough :
Powerful opening of verse that brings you to a place of treasure and adventure that Dylan Thomas would have appreciated ! Talk about being led into a story . Simple clean guitar leads us forward to alternating voice and harmony . What wonderful imagery here .

5) Ye Banks & Braes :
Clean open harmony singing that takes the breath away . Watch out for those Scottish Rouges !

6) Gallows Waltz :
Guitar swings us into this eery waltz of death in the American Civil War . Every song is so clear and words so enunciated that it is so easy to stay with the storytelling here .. Verse like "The seed is unplanted and the harvest is empty " leaves us with just wonderful imagery and hits close to the heart .

7) Three Drunken Maidens :
Here we have pure fun . You can tell they had a smile the whole time they were working this song up .

8) The Maiden and The Rose :
Amazing ! As good as it gets ; untouched voice .. Completely accessible .

9) Luckiest Sailor :
This is an astounding story and well told of a personal close call with how hard the sea can be . I hope this one gets a ton of play around Hull ..

10) Farewell To Tarwaithe:
Whaling in cold waters is a tough life but great harmonies makes the story a bit easier to take !

11) Sparehand:
Linda and Hazel should get some kind of town award for giving such a strong picture of fishing life in Hull . Woody Guthrie would have song this one if he were around .

12)Octavius:
Storms !!!! Guitar ! Organ !! Storms !! Harmony . A ghost story of a lost ship in ice .. This is an eery ending to a very strong CD ..

Thanks to Linda and Hazel for putting this work together . Much of its bravery is in its sparsity . Pulling off clean clear music is one of the hardest things to do well and its here!!!

All the best , Guy

Great CD, 'Northern Tide' is one of those contemporary songs that is good enough to become 'Trad' in years to come.
Wonderful stuff, Linda & Hazel.

Bloody hell , I think I almost know N T from the singing of Moses and the ref already.

Very successful marriage of lyric and melody.

One day I may hear the source

How disappointing..... I thought Hissyfit had another wonderful CD for sale, then I find it's the one I've already got.

For anyone who hasn't heard Northern Tide is a GREAT CD full of GREAT songs and GREAT harmonies.

I'm delighted to hear that their fame is spreading.

Villan kindly put the link up to Radio Britfolk. On the programme in question, the announcer did the introduction for both Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher and Hissifit. Then followed music from both and when Linda and Hazel's voices came in after a pause, the hairs on the back of me neck bristled. Two of the finest voices in perfect harmony and perfect sympathy with each other.

Lovely stuff.

I am extremely touched by all your comments -we nearly have enough material for a new CD so hopefully we can get our act together soon. Could not of achieved half of what we have without our many friends most of whom are Mudcatters - In the meantime, come and see us at Market Raisen and Saddleworth Folk Festival ...

Sorry gang I had no idea you all knew this one so well and that it has been out for this amount of time. Thanks Jeri for the link . This is what happens when your stuck 3000 miles away from Hull !!
It still desevered the close up look , at any rate.. If this thread gets Linda and Hazel closer to putting out a second one all the better !!
Maybe on the next one they could put the dates it was recorded .That might help . HA :~)    .. Really I would love to know who did what on this CD .. Did you use a studio or work on it at home ??

Good luck at Market Rasen !!
All the best from snowy Connecticut .. Time to go shovel some more !!! Guy

Just caught excitedly up with this thread, I too got misled into believing it a new CD but hopes dashed then raised again by Linda's post about having enough material for another - fantastic news that.

I must tell Linda tho' that Sparehand is currently probably the most requested song out of those I sing - such is its brilliantly evocative power;
thanks so much Linda for granting me permission to sing it all that time ago, and I really hope that I do it proper justice (hey, I did email you re my recent change of address, but the server's gone and rejected the message...)

Good luck at Market Rasen - and yes Villan I will get there one day.

the CD was recorded at Harpmakers home studio and the additional musicians are Mike Bennett who is my musical mentor and a fantastic composer/singer and Val Illingworth who is one of my bestest friends -they run Cottingham Live folk club and have helped out more musicians than you could swing a stick at. Although we are a cappella group we felt that we wanted to vary the pace of the CD and roped in our friends. In retrospect it changed the mood of some songs more than we hoped. Mention should also go to Micca for the wonderful poetry of his words on Theipval -it is really his song I just added a tune. The CD is about 2 years old now but has sold really well thanks to everyone who has bought it! We would love to do more gigs especially in Yorkshire/Lincs but are somewhat limited by work and family commitments. (We were hoping them nice Cara lads might want some backing singers but they never phone they never write.....

A nice thing about folk-ish music* is that, a good recording doesn't ever sound dated. If it does, it was pop. Hissyfit's recording will continue to be discovered by new people because it's 1) excellent, and 2) timeless.

When you get the next one done, please post information on how we can get a copy, because I sure as heck want one!

* I mean "like songs that came before it, which people not only want to hear, but want to sing, which are not intended to have a shelf life or 'best sung by' date."

Hoping for Linda and Hazel at our session in the Sun, Beverley, this Sunday 8th Jan. Sorry for the blatant plug but once again we are returning to the Sun after another change of licensee. Hazel comes to most of our Beverley sessions and Linda has indicated that she could well be there this week too.

Worth turning up just in case and lots of other mudcatters will be there anyway.

Thank you Guy, for your review, and EVERYONE for your comments.
Linda and I just love the chance to sing together. I must get the chords from Mike B and prepare for Broomlee Lough - I realise we've never sung it since the CD was produced - it is such a great story.

I still haven't got this CD but I've heard Linda's songs sung out at many a singaround and club over the past 2 years (occasionally by the Wondrous Hissyfit themselves). Fabulous stuff!! Maybe by the time I get to purchase the first CD, I'll be able to get the 2nd one too *grin*

Sinsull Thanks for the idea..( I make historic flowerpots) Seems like I am only getting out around gardening events, , Not that thats a bad thing.. Usually lots of shimp !! I am trying to get something going with the Garden History Museum in Lambeth so I might get to see some of the London Catters if I pull that off. Thats still in the air.    How about a garden in Hull or Beverly ? . I would so love to help Fountains Abby in some way .

Hazell the cd is just wonderful .. I added a banjo part to 3 drunken maidens for a lark and want to send you and Linda a copy of that and this years work as well .COuld you pm an address to send them along ??

. Ive been playing with a MAc laptop and Garage band .. Lots of fun and a bit less formal then going into the studio..It is different when its not $50.00 an hour   .. All the best to all here. Guy

Northern Tides is my favourite song at the moment and those who were at the Sunday concert at the Getaway wil have heard Geoff and I singing it. We also got the chance to do it on the Henry Morgan ship at Mystic Seaport. Two CDs were sold at the Getaway and a third ws stolen by b*******s who broke into our rental car in Canada. So you two, I owe you some money but never seem to bump into you. PM me an address and I'll send it through.
