BS: What do YOU wear on your head?

Subject: BS: What do YOU wear on your head?
From: Bee-dubya-ell

Inspired by this thread...

I don't have a Greek fisherman's cap. Nor do I have a porkpie, a beret, or a newsboy. I also don't have a Panama hat, a fedora, a Stetson or a pith helmet.

What I do have are baseball caps. Lots of 'em. I wear 'em pretty much any time I'm outside because the hair on top of my head abdicated several years ago and sunburned scalps are unpleasant. I also wear them when I'm indoors if there are bright lights which may cause reflected glare from my head to blind other people.

My cap collection is of a motley nature. Most of them are "freebies" or "gimmes" with the exceptions of a few that have been purchased at folk festivals. The ones bearing blatant advertising slogans are reserved for non-public wear. A Miller Lite cap is fine for gardening, but I won't wear it in public. Not only do I no longer drink, but even when I did I wouldn't drink that swill.

When I'm not wearing a particular cap, one of my instrument cases is. I keep my guitars, banjos etc. lined up against a wall in their cases and each case is wearing a baseball cap. They frequently fight over who gets to wear which cap. Just the other day the D-28 and the J-45 got into an argument over who would get to wear the "Friends of Florida Folk" cap. The Gibson won, leaving the Martin wearing a bright jungle-print thing with "MFS" embroidered on it. I have no idea what "MFS" stands for, having found the cap floating in the intracoastal waterway.

By the way, though commonly referred to as "baseball caps", none of my caps actually bears the logo of a baseball organization and, to the best of my knowledge, none have been worn in actual baseball games.

So, what are your headwear preferences?

So you have a Martin and a Gibson....

Does this indicate an alter ego?

1. Black Kangol beret (worn backwards a la Richard Thompson) currently lost but rumoured to be under 18 year old daughter's pile of bedroom debris
2. Dark brown "Australian" style wide-brimmed leather hat with plaited leather band (bought in Vancouver!)
3. Navy blue Breton fisherman's hat (bought in Brittany and worn when I can't find 1 or 2!)
4. Straw trilby (made in Luton) for those rare sunny days here

When it's f***in cold I have a LL Bean Mad Bomber hat.

Moderately cold I had an old beret now replaced by my Greek Fishermans hat.

Summer - Tilley Endurables or a straw beret.

I also wear an old cherished Boston Redsox beseball cap, and a CNN baseball cap.

I just ordered a fedora and I am anxiously awaiting its arrival (although in all honesty it is for a role I am playing on stage and probably won't have the courage to wear it regularly.) Otherwise, the occasional thong.

A bunch of baseball caps, all but one with stuff on them. Stuff like a fishing fly and the words "Bite Me" or a fishing fly and a fly reel and the words "Reel men play with their flies" or "Goex Black Rifle Powder" or "USS Wasp" or "Doellman Gunsmithing."

A couple of straws, a khaki one where the sides of the brim snap to the crown, a couple "Indiana Jones" types, a large old-fashioned flat-crown with wide brim, a tricorn, one of those things that looks like a cow pat with a visor.

Sometimes I wear a fencing mask, too.

Most days it a cycling helmet. Depending on the weather I generally wear a bandana as a head band if it's cold but not wet. A baseball cap with Meatloaf logo if it's wet & windy, an aussie style bush hat if it's wet but not windy.

All my other hats are for decoration purposes and I wear them as seems appropriate........ I don't have anything that flashes though.........

Today, since it's snowing and sleeting, a Tilley Endurables winter tweed hat with the flaps tucked up -- it's not cold, just messy.

On cold days, fur earmuffs and the hood of my sheepskin coat.

At the office (which has large west-facing windows) in the afternoons, an ancient long-billed ball cap with the NATO compass rose and NATO-IFOR Bosnia embroidered on it.

Clinton, another big headed person! I also have a huge head for hat purposes and find it difficult to find hats that fit. I also have an Irish style cap that I wear when we are travelling but Jayne never lets me wear it at home because she says it makes me look dorky. ( not a stretch I guess) I really like the concept of hats, the old felt fedoras and homburgs and derbies and top hats. I wish they would make a comeback for routine wear. I sort of missed the whole hat thing which seemed to wain in the late fifties.

A friend from Russia told me it's called an ewshankka but I'm not shure how to spell it.!

I'll go with the crowd with my 16 year old Fedora (Trilby style) Stetson "Gun Club" model. A similar but now apparently discontinued one that I wore for about 9 years (until the brim fell off) was also a Stetson called the "Indiana Jones" model.

I'd really like to retire this one, but when I took it to the only "hatter" in the region he informed me that "Stetsons are too cheaply made to be cleaned" so I bought one of his. His lasted about a year and fell apart, so I went back to my Stetson. While it has a whole lot of character, and I really do have to treat it gently, I think it's good for at least a few more years.

It used to be brown.

That makes my head hurt Clinton..........

There's no reason why someone shouldn't wear a hat if it pleases them to do so. Although I do tend toward wearing hats and outfits that compliment each other.

There are some people (but very few) who really don't suit hats, but normally it's because people can't find the right style or size.

As a female with an enourmous head, most of my hats come from gentlemens outfitters (which reminds me, I need a new panama) and all the pretty dainty ones have to remain in the shop as they never fit me. One day I may go mad and have a go at making my own.......   :)

JimmyT what's an irish style cap? Do you mean a flat cap? And what the heck's a toque? I'm intrigued....... and British, so bear with me.....

*struggling up from the dusty catacombs*

*whew*...took a bit to find a couple, as they hide...in fear I'll wear them again! ..Or maybe my wife hides them....hmmm...

so...an assortment

The left two on the top shelf are military surplus (from The Yard Store, John!..I used to work there in 1973-76) one is a "yardbird" hat like you'd see on *M*AS*H*, the other is a navy flight deck cap with fleece lining and a neck cover for bad weather. Below them are Winter caps which get worn maybe a few times each winter... The 'baseball' type, I use mostly to keep stuff out of my hair when mowing of leaf raking...the 'cowboy' type are also seldom worn, but I carry one with me in the summer to outdoor events...(Scots ancestry...sunburn)
...the one collapsed under the weight of the badges was worn for 17-18 years at our local folk festival, where I was staff...mostly photography...it got a new badge or two each year and for the last two or three, it was only worn for a short ceremonial period. The hard hat was also worn during work there.

The ones I wear mostly now are the 'Greek' types in front, with the leather one being my favorite..

(John...a couple of those hats have been to Winfield!)

Mostly an unruly mess of very gray hair. I've just never gotten into the ball cap habit, but usually wear one for yardwork in the sun, or in my shop when making a lot of saw or router dust. Out and about in summer sun, usually an old tan or blue "sailor". For winter cold, a plain knit "stocking cap", with jacket hood added for worst case days.
There is a cowpoke style straw in the closet that I got when we rode mules down the Grand Canyon a few years ago, but I seldom put it on.

By the way, what several folks have called a "toque" in this thread is what I've always called a "toboggan". A Google image search for "toque" indicates that the terms are relatively synonomous, but that "toque" also has a much broader meaning. It seems to mean any of a variety of bill-less caps, including those goofy-looking things worn by chefs.

This is NOT a bald spot! It's a solar panel for a sex machine!

Most of the time, a Greek fisherman's cap. Black. But—

Back in the early 1970s I saw a whole bunch of them in a chandler's shop out on Shilshole Bay, liked them, and bought one. Then, when I went to the first Northwest Folklife Festival I ever went to, I noticed that every guy who had ever sung (or attempted to sing) a sea chantey—and his pet chicken—were wearing Greek fishemen's caps. They're a bloody drug on the market. Very "folky." But I like the thing, it's comfortable, and it's handy.

I'm thinking about a change of image, though. I'm told I look good in a fedora. And I have a "Crocodile Dundee" hat that I got at the local Banana Republic stuffed away in a closet somewhere.

I'm giving serious consideration to a deerstalker. I think I have the kind of nose that could bring it off.

Blondish and gray hair or a straw hat in the garden.

A wool toboggan (that's what I call 'em too) when it is really cold.

A baseball style hat that says "Other People's Money" when I don't need a hat but do need a shower and a shampoo.

I usually wear something on my head...the hair went away years ago, and the sun is dangerous year around at 6000 feet. Most often a crusher"cowboy" hat or a baseball-type hat from my favorite microbrewery. When it's cold out, I usually wear a "cap, watch, wool, black" (that's what the tag inside says) and, for summer hiking, one of these with a bandana stuck under it in the back for the Foreign Legion look.

Addendum to opening post:

I mentioned that when I'm not wearing my baseball caps they adorn my instrument cases which lean upright against the wall. I also mentioned that this practice has led to some friction among the instruments. Well, it's gotten worse.

Obviously, caps can only be worn by instruments which (A) have necks and (B) live in traditionally shaped cases. While that describes most of my instruments, I also have a Fender Strat that lives in a rectangular case, an Autoharp and a hammer dulcimer which live in cases shaped, oddly enough, like an Autoharp and a hammer dulcimer, plus a couple of bodhrans which live in round quilted bags. There is no way to stretch caps over their heads. Heck, I can't even tell which end is supposed to be the head.

Anyway, they're all demanding equal treatment and I don't know what to do. Even the stretchiest XXL knit toque won't go over he head of an 18" bodhran. Maybe I'll let them wear sport coats instead.

Clinton indicates some amazement at that. But, the head is a fairly common place to wear a beard. Somewhere in the vicinity of the chin.

The convention in this part of the world is to wear the face on the head. And the beard on the chin, due south of the mouth.

There's one other thing I wear on my head, and you can see it in the right light conditions when I doff the hat. It's a halo. Believe, it, chump. I have done some good in this world, even if I fall short of what some might call perfection.

Although I asked about my Greek fisherman's cap in this thread (click) I haven't really started wearing it on a regular basis. I have to own clothing a number of years before I feel it's really "me."

What I do weak is a light brown, crushable Harris Tweed hat that looks like a battered version of the hats Rex Harrison used to wear. I found one at a thrift store for fifty cents, and I really loved it. I was supposed to go on an eighth-grade outing to the seashore with my oldest son (now age 32), and I planned to wear that hat although #1 Son hated it. The hat disappeared before the trip, and I seriously believe that my ex-wife had something to do with the disappearance.

A couple of years later, I saw a picture of my dad wearing a hat that was exactly the same as my thrift store hat. I asked Dad if he could mark it for me so I could have it after he died. My mom said she'd do me one better, and she gave me the hat right away because she hated it.

So, that's the hat I wear - but I was careful not to wear it around my mother or my ex-wife. Mom died a year ago and the ex-wife got remarried, so the hat is safe.

-Joe-

It's like the Hanna Hat that Poppagator wears (see below), but more like the Donegal Tweed style.

Irish crushable: http://www.hannahats.com/. I have a gray one very similar to that shown at the top of the page. It's a Hanna hat imported from Donegal and purchased a couple of years ago from Meyer The Hatter on St. Charles Avenue in downtown New Orleans.

Unaccustomed as I am to the northern winter, I make it a point to keep my head covered whenever I venture outdoors. I have a nice collection of baseball caps, but find myself using this one tweed cap almost to the exclusion of all other alternatives.

When I go indoors and take it off, find it very convenient to stuff it into the sleeve of my jacket. Because it truly is "crushable," it is completely unaffected by this treatment. It's formal/dressy enough for most occasions, and comfortable even in the most informal circumstances.

SunnySister, I also wear a bun & as I'm a librarian 13 months from retiring, mine is an authentic greying bun & is also held insecurely with pins that often fall out. I have decided to be one of those old women who scatter bobby pins around! I will keep the pin manufacturers & retailers solvent.

Over my bun in summer I wear a wonderful straw hat with a wide brim decorated with a wide black satin ribbon tied in a loose bow at centre back,& in winter I wear a red or a black beret.

The summer hat came from the local St Vincent de Paul shop last year & cost $5 & replaced my absolute favourite hat, a very battered boater I've been wearing since the 70's. I didn't have the heart to throw the old boater away, so I put it on Teddy who is a 20" bear who sits on my bed, beside my pillow. Makes life a bit awkward as the hat is a very stiff straw, & the ragged brim gets in the way when I reach for the alarm clock.

I've also had the berets since the 70's. The red one is a little large for me & has had a handmade birchwood Birch brooch on the side. The brooch was made by a Latvian woman about 25 years ago & has been on the beret since I bought it. The black beret has 2 woodedn Japanese brooches on the side. The brooches are 5-sided and are pieces from a chess-like game & are made of pale wood with the character for footsoldier/army. When I wear my beret into Chinatown I sometimes get the character translated (again).

I am never seen without a hat when outside my place - I even wear my hat or beret grocery shopping.

Lady Penelope and Sandra in Sydney you are women after my own heart! I have a fetching collection of hats, the best of which were purchased in the UK, where all the best hats live. Today's hat is a lovely amber wool boucle cloche with black velvet trim and kept on with a decorative but lethal amethyst hatpin.

Never Go Walking Out Without Your Hat Pin

My Granny was a very shrewd old lady.
The smartest woman that I ever met.
She used to say "Now listen to me Sadie",
there's one thing you never must forget.

Never go walking out without your hat pin.
The law won't let you carry more than that!
For if you go walking out without your hat pin,
you may lose your head as well as lose your hat!

My granny said men never could be trusted.
No matter how refined they might appear.
She said that many maiden's hearts got busted.
Because men never have but one idea.

I heard that grandpa really was a mess...
So grandma knew where of she spoke...,I guess...

Never go walking out without your hat pin.
Not even to some very classy joint.
For when a fella sees that you have got a hat pin,
He's very much more apt to get the "point"!

My momma set quite a bad example,
she never heeded grandmama's advice.
She found that if you give a man a sample,
The sample somehow never does suffice!

In fact it's thought that I may not have been...
If mom had not gone out...without...her pin....

Never go walking out without your hat pin.
It's about the best protection you have got!
For if you go walking out without your hat pin,
You may come home without your "you know what"!

From: GUEST,Wordless Woman

Here's a song - well, lyrics anyway - to everyone who wears a hat:

Where Did You Get That Hat - Jas. Rolmaz 1901

Chorus
Where did you get that hat
Where did you get that tile
Isn't it a knobby one
In just the proper style
I should like to have one
Just the same as that
(Where 'ere i go they shout)
"Hello, where did you get that hat?"

Now how I came to get this hat
Is very strange and funny
My uncle died and left to me
His property and money
And when the will it was read out
They told me straight and flat
If I'm to have his money I must also wear his hat

Chorus

When I go to the concert hall
In the concert season
Someone's is sure to shout at me
Without the slightest reason
When I go to the opera hall
To have a jolly spree
There's one or two sopranos
Who are sure to shout at me
"Hello where did you get that hat?"

Chorus

When Mr. And Mrs. Ramsbottom
Had their last garden party
I was amongst the guests,
Who had a welcome true and hearty.
The Prince of Wales was also there,
And my heart jumped with glee,
When someone said the prince
Would like to have a word with me,
"Hello, where did you get that hat?"^^^

I wear a gele on my head when I am doing African cultural programming. Sometimes I wear a gele at other times just to cover my head from the cold or just because I feel like it.

A gele is a Yoruba {Nigeria, West Africa} word for a headwrap that is made by tying and tucking a rectangular piece of material in different ways. The cloth might be the same pattern as the rest of your outfit, or its pattern and color{s} may just compliment that your {African or Western style} outfit.

HERE is a page that shows examples of different gele/head wraps.

I meant to note that the shawls shown on that page that I linked to are the length and width of the material that is used for the head wrap.

IMO, wrapping a gele is an acquired skill and the resulting head wrap can be a work of art. Unfortunately, few African American women know how to wrap geles. Personally, I don't like the Erykah Badu's big, towering turban look. I bet that turban was awfully heavy.
I think Erykah Badu wore her headwrap that way because she didn't know anyone who knew how to wrap the Yoruba style geles.

;0}

Here's some photos of Erykah Badu with and without what was her signature turban look.

Wordless woman - thankyou for the praise. I also own 4 or 5 other hats, all wide brimmed straws & most are boater style. Somewhere I also have a silly hat for festivals, it's an old bluey-green, 1960's?? cloche shape in a soft silky/fleecy material that was hard to pull down over my ears cos of my hairstyle.

Lots of folk here wear silly hats at festivals - is this just an Oz tradition or it widespread? Lots of folks also wear sensible hats, shady or warm depending on weather.

Azizi - that's a great site, I'd never really seen African clothes before, just the occassional pic in a newspaper or book. Sydney has an African community in a suburb that I cross on my way to another & I can see interesting hairdressers & food shops from the bus, but I've never had time to get out & look around. It might be an idea to leave early one day & interrupt my journey.

Martin I was wonderin' what a turbin cowboy was so I googled it:

Redneck Chic

"Just take the damned cowboy hat off, Tex."

If there's one rising trend in American popular-music culture that destroys my sanity--- perhaps even above the mindlessness of "gangsta" rap--- it is what I call the countrification of the United States. Country music, and all of its accompanying behavioral quirks, has seemingly and officially fulfilled its quest to permeate the fabric of our society. I would love to know which bright think-tank coordinated this effort, and WHY. Now, I can accept this sort of thing going on in the southern and mid-western United States (in fact, I expect it), but I live in the northeast--- Massachusetts, to be precise--- and I simply cannot, WILL NOT, sit idly by as one of the last places in the country which was traditionally free of this "Ahm-a goin' c-UH-ntry" nonsense succumbs to the onset of Redneck Chic.

As a guideline (though with exceptions)--- country music is the very height of mundane sappiness. There's nothing particularly exciting about some drawling, genetically dubious twat butchering the life out of a pentatonic scale with a twangy guitar.

Perhaps if it were just a "music thing", it wouldn't be such a bane of my existence, but more often than not, I find that it comes down to being a behavioral mindset with these c-UH-ntry clowns. I do not understand why someone not born into the redneck way of life would find it fashionable to the point that they would voluntarily impart it upon themself. What's the attraction? I wish that somebody who could give me a sound explanation would step forward. What makes a person wake up one day, and think to themself: "you know, it might do me good to dress up like a third-rate John Wayne, and take on the personality of a belligerent dullard."?

Again, there are eerie parallels with our endearing culture of "ghetto chic". Whatever the reason, it has become "hip" to walk and talk as if one has a sixth-grade education. I hope that no one finds this to be a startling revelation. Ever notice that every jackass who gets propped up in front of some daytime talk-show camera either speaks like Forrest Gump or 50 Cent? Our lives have been overtaken by "Bubbas" and "Lil' Dre Doggy Doggz". I can only hope that it isn't contagious, though it seems that it is.

What's the story with this pandemic, "ruff-n-tuff" cowboy fantasy that goes on in this country? How many real cowboys, by trade, do we have left? A few hundred? So what about all of these other ass punchers, for Christ's sake? Where's the costume party, cowboy?

Perhaps they're Trick-or-Treating--- for chewing tobacco, six packs of Old Milwaukee, and second cousins to pork when the sun goes down. I don't know. I'm just as confused as you are.

Maybe where some of you come from, some damned "bubba" in a pick-up truck and a cowboy hat is (at least) somewhat appropriate, but in eastern Massachusetts, it's nothing short of f*cking imbecilic. What's the pick-up truck for--- the rugged terrain of the greater Boston area? To navigate through the treacherous, mud-strewn trails down at the mall and the local burger joint? I encounter these douchebags when I am in line for my morning coffee at the drive-through. Sure enough, there's the stupid cowboy hat, and the ear drum-sodomizing sounds of Garth Brooks pouring forth from the 7,000,000 ton, dual rear wheeled, extended cab deluxe, Rodeo-Edition Limited pick-up truck. Of course, if I'm really in luck, I'll get to pass the time examining all of its proudly displayed stickers for NASCAR, six-shooters, high-performance automotive parts, Confederate flags (always doubly amusing in the northern US), and Harley Davidson (usually, these are the same halfwits who are also "bikers" in their spare time).

Of course the most bitter of all realizations, is that "ol' Jim Bob" in front me is typically something in the way of a f*cking shoe salesman, and the closest that he's ever come to a-ropin'-and-a-brandin' a herd of cattle, was yesterday when he went to Subway and ordered a large steak and god damned cheese with everything on it. An applicable word leaps to mind: "delusional".

Also; when I inquire as to what the possible allure of listening to country music could be, I fail to acknowledge the veracity of these conclusions:

1.) Random male: "Like, Faith Hill is hot. And you know it."

2.) Random male: "Like, Shania Twain is hot. And you know it."

3.) Random female: "Like, Toby Keith is hot. You wouldn't understand."

4.) Random female: "Like, Vince Gill is hot. You wouldn't understand."

Incredible. Grown up persons--- all of whom presumably underwent some form of schooling during the course of their lives--- predicating their musical preferences upon the physical looks of the performer. I expect this rationale from 12 year-olds, not adults.

I also tend to shy away from the assertion that "c-UH-ntry" music is the spirit of America, "and if'n ya'll don't listen to it, then ya'll are kinda like America-haters and communists." --- and this is AFTER informing the mouth-breather that my voting record HARDLY makes me a left-leaning utopian.

This does very little in the way of accrediting the image of a musical style which already induces auto-associations to other grand cultural achievements such as steer wrestling, calf roping, bull riding, "coon" hunting, calf dressing (yes, that's putting a calf into human clothes--- don't forget to bring grandma along), and line dancing. In other words--- "grand cultural achievements" should be taken to mean "insensately dumb hick activities". Where do they come up with this garbage? What's next--- banjo f*cking?

As for the poseurs in the northeastern United State--- just take the damned cowboy hat off, Tex.

True to life cowboys are few and far between, and our modern-day, suburban lifestyles cannot be toughened by the dull-witted, nasal twang of a country song, a comically large belt buckle, and a homely plaid shirt. Donkey.

It's all Billy-Ray Cyrus' fault. He brought it to the rest of the country in the 1990s, and this is one moronic storm that I'll just have to wait out. In the meantime, I'll be the guy behind the "NASCAR-hero" sitting in the Ford F350, at the drive through window, consumed by both irrepressible laughter and rage.

I hope that I'm not alone.

See you next month, kiddies.

Anyway, down the bottom of the last hyperlink I shared is a link for Yoruba men's clothing {including the fila hat-since this is a hat thread}.

But here's another great site I found:
African fashions

It doesn't have a lot of hats-but seeing these fashions here may be the next best thing to seeing them in person.

Best wishes,

PS: I should say that there are many different kinds of African fashion. The pages I linked to are only a small example of West African fashion. The Senagalese, for example, are known for their clothing...I'm not sure if their clothing is featured in that last hyperlink.

Enjoy!

One thing about cowboy hats from experience is that they do make an excellent bucket to dump river water over your head when its too friggin' hot out in the bush. S'pose that's where they get the term" ten gallon hat". But in the winter they don't do a very good job of keeping the rain and snow, when its cut on the bias, from running down your neck.

Re the "cowboys" at Slim Dusty's funeral - True-Love's tall-crowned, black, cowboy style-hat is an Akubra. They've always made that style here aparently. Some Aussies have always worn them (often punched down into a lower shape). It's only lately that everyone wears the same stlye of Akubra in the same brown colours, punched down even lower. Mine's white - "The Bobby" (worn with the crown up.)

Once at a Folk Festival a young man came up to Hildebrand and said, "That is a perfectly ridiculous hat!" Later we saw the same fella dancing around in a flowered, beribboned hat with a bunch of Morris Dancers. He grinned at us in a friendly way.

Cheers, Joy

"Your dislike of country music is just one more example of your dislike of much of what goes on in America by normal Americans."

Thus speaks the resident redneck.

Martin, why are you addressing this to Bobert? He hasn't even posted on this thread! It looks like you're confusing Bobert (who lives in West Virginia) with bodad. Lost again, eh?

And how does one deal with the mentality that allowed what happened in West Virginia? I think Bobert (since you've addressed your remarks to him and he may not even see this) is on top of that issue. When the government regulatory agencies look the other way when mine owners ignore safety matters and a dozen miners get killed as a result of the negligence of both the mine owners and the government regulatory agencies, I think Bobert probably deals with it the way any intelligent person would. Sadness mixed with anger, and a determination to change the kind of regime that allows this sort of thing.

How do YOU deal with it? Just shrug your shoulders and figure, "Well, accidents happen. Just as long as the profits keep rolling in, who cares?"

Hmmm.
"A pint's a pound the world around."
And there are eight pints in a gallon, which means a gallon weighs eight pounds.
So, a ten gallon hat, full of water, weight how much?

I've spent a lifetime wondering about that.

Actually a wide brimmed had (such as a cowboy hat) is practical. As Metchosin stated it keeps the rain well of you and harmful sun rays off your neck. That's why the Ontario Provincial Police were issued those Mountie or Smokey hats. Reason being (from what I heard) is that an OPP officer developed skin cancer on his neck. He subsequently sued on the basis that the force did not issue appropriate head gear.

Again on the high-crown-Akubra look - Western Australian Aboriginal stockmen wear their hats in this style. If you look at an Akubra catalog you see all sorts of styles not just the ones worn in the suburbs of our big cities.
Also Slim Dusty used an American Country line-up, complete with pedal steel, for his backing band, and they played with an American Country sound. (Nary a button accordion, tin whistle, banjo-mandolin, bones, spoons, lagerphone.)
The "cowboys" were OK, I reckon. Cheers, Joy

I think people who do not 'work' using horses/quads to take care of their cattle and who walk around wearing Stetsons look like bloody fools. They seldom know the difference between heifers, cows, steers and bulls, and trying to 'pass' as cowboys/cowgirls makes them look really stupid. That includes those dolts who go on stage at the Grand Old Opry--which is another stupid thing.

Hello? I am about as far as you can get from being a working cowboy and still live in the American Southwest. However, the reason that style of hat is popular with cowboys, sheep herders and other such people is that it is the most practical hat for the weather here. The broad brim keeps the sun and rain off your head, your eyes and the back of your neck, and the high crown (1 1/2 to 2 inches above the top of your head) provides insulation from the heat and cold. UV will go right through a ball cap sitting in contact with your scalp. I wouldn't have a Stetson, though...they don't fit very well. Most people I know wear Resistol hats or some kind of straw hat in that hated design.

Joybell - True love's hat is a very low hat compared to the hats I saw.

6 - Oz police officers can wear brimmed hats or baseball hats. I'm just waiting for info on neck skin cancer claims to hit the news, tho the Police Service probably gives out sunblock. Oz has the highest skin-cancer rate in the world.

Years ago a friend & her 21 year old son had skin cancers removed at the same time, both from their driving arms, and he had only been driving for 3 or 4 years.Around the same time another friend was an outdoor worker whose employer supplied sunblock. Most of his macho mates wouldn't wear it so he was giving it away to us.

Well, I agree with Bruce -- "cowboy" hats on drugstore cowboys look silly. BUT they are practical, especially if you live/work in the plains, desert or mountains (and we have all three here).

But as for what people wear on their heads, I'm surprised that no one has yet told of the people visiting a remote Pacific island. They were a bunch of anthropology students, and were studying the indigenous people. Interestingly enough, the locals all had their heads covered with the excrement of a large local bird called the "Foo" in the language of the people there. The belief was that they would die if they washed the stuff off their heads. The Anthro class, of course, did interviews and all the stuff that anthropologists do, and one day at Foo scored a direct hit on the Professor. The natives, of course, gathered 'round and told him not to wash his head now or ever, but he ignored them, washed, and dropped dead immediately. His students learned, and when they became targets they never after washed their heads. They had learned that if the Foo shits, wear it.

Not necessarily, in recent years, a lot that I have ridden with prefer Ropers or something similar. You're a lot less likely to break an ankle on rocky ground and sooner or later, on rough terrain you've got to get down off your horse.

Something with enough heel for safety in the stirrup is a lot more practical than tottering around in high heels on rocks like a sailor without sea legs.

I don't consider myself a cowgirl, although I did manage to rope and tie a herford to a tree that was careening around loose in the neighbourhood once...but I did that on foot, not on horseback. LOL.

I've been riding horses for over 50 years now and caring for my own for the last 15 of those. While I will wear a "cowboy hat" on occasion, for practical purposes, you will never catch me in a "cowboy boot" on the kind of trails I prefer.

I've no desire to break an ankle and around here in recent times, when I'm not being sloppy, I prefer my steel toed work boots for ground work, I've had too many crunched toes over the years and my bones are probably not as robust as they used to be.

Occasionally, when stewarding at festivals, I have worn a disgustingly sweat-stained cricketing hat, with a steward's badge secured to the crown with an elastic band.

Cricketing hats are off-white (occasionally in other colours), made from cotton with a double-stitched broad brim. The underside of the brim is usually dark green, which cuts down on the glare.

For hot and sunny summer days, they are surprisingly practical. (I must admit to never have been a cricketer).

Shame ... sounds like a good song Woman of many words. Appreciate the post.

Here's some more hat lyrics:

She's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
To wear at all her social affairs
She wears it when she's cleaning the windows
She wears it when she's scrubbing the stairs
But you will never see her at Ascot
She can't afford the time or the fare
But she's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
So she don't care

He's bought a hat like Anthony Eden's
Because it makes him feel like a Lord
But he can't afford a Rolls or a Bentley
He has to buy a secondhand Ford
He tries to feed his wife and his family
And buy them clothes and shoes they can wear
But he's bought a hat like Anthony Eden's
So he don t care

Buddy can you spare me a dime
My wife is getting hungry
And the kids are crying
This poverty is hurting my pride
Buddy can you spare me, buddy can you spare me a dime

She's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
And her neighbors think it suits her a treat
But she hasn't any food in the larder
Nor has anybody else in the street
But to look at her you'd think she was wealthy
'Cos she smiles just like a real millionaire
'Cos she's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
So she don't care, she don't care, she don't care

... She's Bought a Hat like Princess Marina by Ray Davies

Depends on the weather.

In the summer, a cricketers white hat to keep the sun off.

If I'm working outside, it tends to be a wide brimmed and very battered thing in waxed cotton or leather depending in which one I can find, to keep off the sun and rain alike. I've done a little stockwork, and lots of scrub-bashing and such like. I'm no cowboy, but certinly am country folk, even if stuck in the city at the moment.

A few drops of insect repellant on the hat works as well. You can use high DEET without worryuing too much, as it's not on your skin. Some seential oils work as well, and smell nicer.

And this being Scotland, in the winter, I'll either have on a wide brimmed thing to keep the rain off, or a wolly one to avoid wind chilled ears.

Rereading the thread, I do note an "unfinished" bit of information:

No, no. It's not the boots -- it's what's on the boots. Walmart cowboys don't walk around in corrals or feedlots.

Since even a plastic cowboy can buy a pair of boots, the real key to telling a real cowboy, as most commonly stated here by the few who still know, is:

"The shit's on the OUTSIDE of the boots."

My old 'un pictured (at a link) 'way back near the beginning of the thread is now another year+ older, but still in use. I'm still looking for a decent replacement (or addition) but unable to find anything in the local market other than "party hat" throwaways and "novelties." We have a specialist "hatter" in town, but he knows his market, and can't really afford to stock "real hats" - so he's no help for those of us who want something for daily wear; and the places that actually do have anything that might last more than 30 minutes out of the store have only the broad-brimmed high-crown "cowboy" styles. While some that they stock could be worn by a workin' man (or lady) I'm not a "cowboy" - real or imitation - and don't need/want that kind of hat. So my couple of survivors will just have to continue to display their growing "character" for now. The three that survive (one now about 26 years old) look definitely like an "Indiana Jones" at the end of the movie.

I used to wear a cheap plastic "adventurer" fedora, but gave it up as soon as that movie came out & everybody started wearing them.

Don't wear hats often, & thought I didn't really care about them, but they started finding me - kind of the way I never find cats, but they find me. Some of them just click, with some out-of sync rhythm, and now I find myself using hats to send obscure and meaningless messages.

All-time favorite is a forest green "ball cap" from the El Cortez casino in downtown Vegas. (For those of you who don't know the El Cortez, it's pretty near the bottom of the casino food chain; It smells funny.) The cap has gotten totally salt-stained, dusty, and disreputable, so I tend to wear it to higher class joints. Walk into the Bellagio wearing it, & you can see all the pit critters reaching for their phones to call security. Especially if I'm approaching the check-in desk carrying my matched luggage set of two plastic grocery bags.

Another favorite is a deep-sea fisherman's number with an improbably long bill, with tar schmears on it. Looks like something Bogey would wear, but of course, with his looks, he could wear anything & look right. I just look schmeary.

When I am hanging around with earth friendlies, I wear a black CAT cap with a yellow logo. Kinda puts everybody on edge. The most expensive cap in the world, going for about $70 grand, USD.

When amongst glitterati, I wear an old, gaudy, black & aqua ball cap from the Bay Meadows race track. Get a lot of WTF looks.

Variety of balaclava helmets for winter. Favorite is baby blue that doesn't look quite so bank-robber-ish. The camo number raises some eyebrows (& hackles)

Hard hat in the mine. The beat-up look is a definite status symbol. You can go too far with this, however - one time a fellow worker threw mine under the tracks of a dozer, to give it that rough-& tumble look. Thus the pancake hat was invented. Also blew one up in a seismic exploration blast - biggest surviving piece was 2 inches square.

Another favorite is a quilted welder's cap, shaped like a pillbox with a teeny little brim slanted down over your forehead.

Didn't realize I liked these hats as much as I apparently do until I started writing this note. Also realized I never wore baseball logos, cowboy hats, military hats, beer logos, snap-brims, booney hats that scream, "Gun Nut!", NASCAR crap, or any kind of advertising (except as noted), or corn-seed hats, in other words, the same crap that 99% of the rest of our "culture " wears.

Speaking of which, I used to get almost nauseated watching every. Single. Gd yuppie chick in Sausalito Tiburon Monterey wearing those idiotic leather-brimmed ball caps with their dorky pony-tail sticking out the back. Eeeek! Don't they know how dopey that looks? It's the Stoopid Uniform.

One of these days, a red hat might find me...
