BS: CANUCKS - Don't forget advance poll

Don't forget.... advanced polls are from 12:00h to 20:00, Friday, Saturday and Monday. Whenever you vote, bring the registration card that you received in the mail because it will make voting easier and faster. (It is not a requirement... just speeds things up.)

You can also vote at your local Elections Canada office EVERY day from 12:00h to 16:00h, but, call them first to make sure you have all the info you need, like ID's, etc. (Yes, seven days a week.)

Lots of info at the Elections Canada website.

VOTE

exactly what the hell is a CANUCK? Obviously not a derisive term or you all wouldn't call each other that.

"**'Canuck' seems to be a sticky term. Used by Canadians, the word is acceptable in virtually all applications. Used by an outsider, however, it has the potential to take on an offensive or derogatory tone."

From here.

It's kinda like this jimmyt: If YOU called us Canucks no one would mind. We are not as easy to offend as some people think. It's like ya got a good friend who calls you a silly sonuvabitch--he doesn't mean to call you a silly son of a bitch, he is being nice. Same with the word Canuck. From friends, no one minds. From people who aren't friends, it's often a whole other story.

Hey, it's not even 9 p.m. here. I've been taping up the basement (for painting). I've been the (are you ready for this?) church, even. I've cooked supper (dinner to you effete easterners). And besides, what makes you assume that I'm an adult?

For jimmyt.

Georgia on My Mind
Transcribed from vocals by Mildred Bailey, recorded November 24, 1931,
From Mildred Bailey, volume 1, Sweet Beginnings, Old Masters, mb-103.
Melodies bring memories that linger in my heart,
Make me think of Georgia,
Why did we ever part?
Some sweet day when blossoms fall,
And all the world's a song,
I'll go back to Georgia,
'Cause that's where I belong!

Georgia! Georgia!
The whole day through,
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind,
Georgia on my mind!

Georgia! Georgia!
A song of you,
Comes as sweet and clear as moonlight
Through the pine.

Other arms reach out to me,
Other eyes smile tenderly,
Still in peaceful dreams I see,
Road leads back to you.

Georgia! Georgia!
No peace I find,
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.

Other arms reach out to me,
Other eyes smile tenderly,
Still in peaceful dreams I see,
Road leads back to you.

Georgia! Georgia!
No peace I find,
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind,
Georgia on my mind!

Well, I always ate breakfast, dinner and supper until I met my wife. Then (and now, mostly, unless I forget, even though we're in the part of the world that agrees with my youth) I ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and supper was something served later at night.

Peace... your link said, "Canuck ( ) 1.noun; often offensive slang

A Canadian, especially a French Canadian."

Wha??? I have never been offended by the term and I am half French Canuck. Now, call me or any of my Acadian buds a Frenchman without smiling and you got da fight, goddamn. Maybe dat flies up in da Belle Provaaaance, but, ici la, not so much.

James... hijacking? Pas sweat mon amis. Hijack off to the sky and back. The more hits to this thread, the better. Makes it look like there might be something worthwhile to read. Better than advertising.

Salut.

Yeah to that Gnu. I have never heard of the term being used perjoratively about French Canadians. And as to Americans using it about us, I have never been offended. The WWII 1st Special Service Force proves that Canucks and Yanks can get along very well with each other.

So do my old friends who worked with Canadian Forces and the Black Watch up in Alberta in 1969, testing the prototypes of chemical warfare suits in clouds of dilute mustard gas.

Off subject-kinda

From some African Americans, substitute the "N-word for what Peace said about "Canucks" 07 Jan 06 - 10:49 PM, but change that
"Used by an outsider, however, it has the potential to take on an offensive or derogatory tone." to "Used by an outsider, however, it is definitely offensive and derogatory."

But for other African Americans like me, we wouldn't dream of using the word to describe ourselves or other Black people we like or don't like.

It's real complicated.

As you can see, I don't even like to spell it out. BTW: for those who don't know or don't remember, the phrase "The N word" originated with the OJ Simpson trial because that corrupt policeman-what ever his name was-kept using the word and the mass media had to deal with how to report that usage without being offensive to African Americans and others who vehemently disliked the public and private use of that referent.

****

And while I'm hear, what's this Black Watch in Alberta?

I hope they liked what they watched.

;o)

Thanks for that info, gnu.

So maybe they named it "Black" Watch cause the color "black" denotes power and a force to be reckoned with and feared {in the positive sense of the word}.

Sorry for this digression...

I hope the best party wins your election {by "best" I mean the governmental party that will benefit the most Canadians}.

Far be it from me to interfer in another country's election (everyone KNOWS that America would NEVER EVER do such a thing), but I do think that the Canadians should take into account the plight of a forgotten group when they vote. I am, of course, talking about Char. Please remember that they have no abode and wander about quite homeless, forced to eat whatever they can find and even drink from streams. Often they will even be found without clothing or proper medical care!

Canada can do better for those who live there.

When you vote, please remember the Char.

Azzizi, the Black Watch, was formed by the English Hanovarian King in the 1700s and was composed of companies of men from the Highlands to "Watch" the Highlanders. Thus the name "Black" means a dark use and" Watch" for watching the Highlanders. The King of England would have known that this would be viewed by the people of Scotland as a nefarious and traitorous undertaking. Nothing positive about it in the view of a Scot.

Who are the Char?

I think the reason some Canadian dislike being called Canucks is because it is a hockey team!

I know that we love our national sport but its not our only identity.

As a nation, we are Canadians.

Azizi - The "...the governmental party that will benefit the most Canadians," is also the party that will benefit North America, if not the world.

If Harper wins, you can say good-bye to the Canada you once knew.

If Harper wins, Bush reigns supreme.

Can you imagine the neo-cons without any opposition?

More research shows quite conclusively that Char (or Charr, as the name is sometimes spelled) are exploited for monetary gain by Canadians!

Shame!
