Tech: Lost the copyright sign

Just taken delivery of my new Dell pc with Win XP Home, same as I've got on my old one, but I find on this version the magic formula given to me by mudcatters some time ago i.e. Alt 169 comes up with something completely different on this machine aaaaaaaargh!!!

Also I have lost the font that I created all my logos with, it was called Thickhead (no wisecracks please), it is not on the list of fonts at all.

These are used for my MUSIC DISCS. So this is "above the line"

Beginning to wish I had never seen this Dell, and about to shoot the "*****s" that recommended it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Stu, the alt0169 work here too, and is closer to what whb was doing. Thanks from me, because I learned something!

When I enter "alt0169" here (in this text block), what I get is a Google window with © on it, which I can then copy/paste.

A common cause of failure of the Alt-NumPad method of entering character codes is failing to turn on NumLock. The Number Pad, which must be used to input the character numbers, must be turned on.

My newest PC came with a "Microsoft Business" keyboard that gave me some initial problems similar to what you described. The difficulty I had was that this magic keyboard has 12 extra "shortcut" buttons, and a scroll roller built in. It defaults on in "business mode" and all of the standard "F keys" have different "shortcut" functions. In the default mode, nothing works as expected.

There is a key in the added top row labelled "F Lock" and pressing this key turns the keyboard into a standard PC keyboard where things work more or less normally.

If your new keyboard has multiple labels (usually top and front of each key) on many keys, you may have something similar. If this is the problem, there should be a way to "change modes" to get a reasonably useful keyboard.

The "correct form" for Alt-NumPad input of character codes always begins with a leading zero. On many keyboards/systems you can get by with leaving off the zero, but yours may be one that requires it.

I suspect that the problem here is that NumLock isn't turned on, but if you got a "fancy keyboard" you may need to figure out how to "turn off the fancy stuff."

Note that "Home Office" in recent editions has an (almost) full function version of Word. For typing non-web stuff, if you set up autoreplace functions to be on, you should be able to just type (c) and Word will automatically replace it with ©. This should also work for (r), (tm), to get ® and ™ and a few other standard symbols. Look in Tools|Options and Tools|Autocorrect Options.

Thanks all, its so simple WHEN YOU KNOW HOW!

John, it works perfectly when the Num Lock is on, plus also with the zero in front, brilliant.

Stu,thanks for the font info, I went straight there to download it, unfortunately every time I hit download I get a page come up with "Entry forbidden, you are not authorised to view this page", I have emailed the owners to see if they can sort it.

Hmmm! maybe Dell isn't so bad after all.

Sorry, so excited I forgot to put my name in the previous post.

Since then I have found thickhead elsewhere and managed to install it, so now back to normal.

Once again Thanks everyone for the speedy conclusion.

Don't know what I'd do without you.

The site given for thickhead was a shareware site. For a free version, check here. But the font is probably still on the machine. Do a search for file "thickhead, ttf".
