So Bobert has the freedom to keep on bitching and whining.

NHTSA
In the US there were 42,636 traffic crash victims in 2004. For What?

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pdf/nrd-30/NCSA/TSFAnn/TSF2004EE.pdf

According to the NLRC In the US There were nearly 3,600 abortions per day in 2000, 151 per hour, one every 24 seconds. In 2000, more children died from abortion than Americans died in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf Wars combined.

For what? Rubbers are cheap enough. But nope, call Roto Rooter.

Smoking Deaths aadac.gov.ab.ca
http://www.zoot2.com/justthefacts/tobacco/smoking_deaths.asp
Smoking is already a worldwide public health issue. About three million people die from tobacco-related diseases each year. Within 30 years the number of tobacco-related deaths will rise to about 10 million per year. This will make tobacco the number one cause of premature death in the world.

Smoking causes 20% of all deaths from cancer, heart disease and stroke in Canada. Over 45,000 people in this country die each year from smoking. About 3,400 of these are Albertans. One in five fire deaths in Canada and one in four in Alberta are due to fires started by smokers. Since 1991, tobacco-related deaths in Canada have increased by about 8%, reflecting the smoking patterns of the 1970s and 80s. Of these deaths, almost two-thirds were women. From 1985 to 1996 death from smoking among Canadian women rose by 77%. Thats because womens rate of smoking kept climbing into the 1970s.
Quick Facts
    * Tobacco causes 25% of all deaths in a developed country like Canada.
    * Smoking kills more people in this country than HIV/AIDS, car accidents, murder, suicide and illegal drug use combined.
    * Half of all regular smokers will eventually die from their addiction, most before their natural time.
    * On average, smokers lose about 15 years off their lives.
    * The global death rate from tobacco use will rise to about 10 million per year within 30 to 40 years.
    * About 500 million people alive today will eventually die from tobacco use if current smoking patterns hold.

For what? I saw in some magazine like Time maybe a photo of a marine in Iraq smoking a cigarette. In the caption it said he was more likely to die from smoking than from combat.

According to http://web1.whs.osd.mil/mmid/casualty/Death_Rates.pdf
There were 2,392 military deaths in 1980 which declined to a low of 758 in 2000 and has since climed to 1887 in 2004. This includes every cause of death uncluding accidental, homocide and suicide, etc

Here is the totals for Iraq: http://web1.whs.osd.mil/mmid/casualty/oif-deaths-total.pdf

A DAY IN THE LIFE
(Lennon/McCartney)
As recorded by the Beatles on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967)

I read the news today, oh boy,
About a lucky man who made the grade,
And though the news was rather sad,
Well, I just had to laugh.
I saw the photograph.

He blew his mind out in a car.
He didn't notice that the lights had changed.
A crowd of people stood and stared.
They'd seen his face before.
Nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords.

I saw a film today, oh boy!
The English army had just won the war.
A crowd of people turned away,
But I just had to look,
Having read the book.
I'd love to turn you on.

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head,
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up, I noticed I was late.

Found my coat and grabbed my hat,
Made the bus in seconds flat,
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream.

Ah-ah-ah-ah....

I read the news today, oh boy!
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire,
And though the holes were rather small,
They had to count them all.
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I'd love to turn you on.

Overview about US casualties (also other casualties available on that website)

gives you a clearer picture than both Woody's grand mean of over 2000 killed so far (roughly two per day) and Bobert's 'cherry picking' of the most extreme recent datum.

Something tells me Military Deaths were lower in 2004 than they were in 1980 which looks like an improvement.

18,509 Total U.S. Casualties

2,180 Dead

16,329 Wounded

Data for weeks ending:
Wednesday 1/4/2005

Interesting that the overall trend seems to be _slightly_ on the decline (the peaks are lower than 11/04). And also interesting that over 90% of the casualties occurred AFTER Baghdad "fell", which indicates something about the layers of hostility in the region over all -- they are not anchored to Baghdad and Saddam Hussein; their is no central government which can govern a "capitualation", but a widely distributed loosely affiliated network of extremists with different reasons for guerilla attacks.

All I know is that today I feel somehow more free than yesterday; their deaths must have had an effect, no doubt. And little by little, with just a few more deaths of American servicemen in Iraq, the world will have the veil of slavery lifted from its head.

Yes, the world is more free today.

Seventeen lives' worth more free.

Thank you, America!

I don't think that's quite fair. I'm sure those people went and served hoping that they were doing the right thing. I'm sure their families all hope that they have made the world better by their sacrifice.

History is a funny business, who knows....?

Woody:

Hmmmm. Why would the National Labor Relations Council be keeping such stats?

But just out of curiosity, do you really think that a "tu quoque" argument (for even those who think that abortion is murder) here is not a rather callous and flippant response to the untimely soldiers' deaths? Are you seriously advocating that the soldiers' deaths are OK because the abortions were also performed (assuming arguendo the actual numbers are right), even though these disparate facts are not related in any meaningful way here?

And do fill us in on what the National Right to Life Committee has been doing to try and reduce the number of abortions. Have they been advocating for better contraception, ya think? Do tell.....

Cheers,

You're right Al - the dig was unfair to those who died, but it was not aimed at them, but rather at those who will sacrifice others for their own dubious ends.

In not answering, Woody, you do in fact provide us all with an answer; and one we expected, if truth be told.

I know that George, i was thinking more of people who might read it - perhaps folks who were hurting enough already.

Christ! what a bloody awful situation!

theres a terrible silence in the debate. probably because no one dares make any predictions.

Galloway on Big Brother tonight seemed to be of the opinion that every Muslim in the world had heard of him. Personally I doubt whether the ones keeping our corner shop could put a name to his face - unless its as the bloke who is on big brother.

One looks for a shred of sanity in the whole situation.

The official death toll is only a fraction of the US troops that have died in and around Iraq. If their death does not involve a projectile of some sort it is a non combat death and is not counted.
For example if a hummvee drives into the river to avoid an explosion and all on board drown, they are not included in the official death toll. If they contract a fatal disease (engineered or natural) they are not counted.
The actual total is guarded. The actual total is....
sorry but Woe be to the journalist who does not heed the advice of the new and improved special office of the Pentagon.

Its the number of wounded that is really frightening.

At least death is final. Many of those soldiers and their families have to deal with those injuries for the rest of their lives. How much does a wounded soldier get to live on when he returns to the U.S.?

I wonder how many think it was worth the loss of a limb?

...and how many return with injuries that you cannot see?
