10 Jan 06 - 02:19 PM (#1645713) Subject: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Mrs.Duck Chance for you to get this one into your diaries. The annual Yorkshire gathering will be at the Black Dog Camblesforth on the weekend 19th to 21st May. This is now our third year at this pub and those who have been before know it is a great venue and hopefully more will join us this year. The pub has been refurbished which makes the room near the restaurant a lot better for sessions and/or singing. Plenty of room for tents or caravans etc so get your name down and join us. |

11 Jan 06 - 07:02 AM (#1646198) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Nick Are the locals going to be a bit more accommodating this year as it seemed a trifle strained when I briefly came last year? Especially the guy who decided it would be a great idea to plonk himself in the middle of everything and play the quiz machine. It's unfortunate that it clashes with the Folk Day at the Black Swan in York which it clashes with every year. Seems sad to have two competing events within c12 miles of each other on the same weeknd each year! |

11 Jan 06 - 04:47 PM (#1646500) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Mrs.Duck The locals are usually ok with us and enjoy listening. They especially enjoy a good rousing chorus song which also means we don't have to be too quiet. I may try to organise a small marquee for those who want a quieter sing but the new layout should give us plenty of places to sing and play. As for clashing with other events that is always a problem but its been the same wekend for six years because it would clash with other things on a different one so you can't win really. |

14 Feb 06 - 05:14 PM (#1668528) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: GUEST,hopefully helpful "but we ain't paying no one!!" "Good on you mate!" Maybe not the politest way to explain to someone who is not aware what a gathering is. They asked a question that deserved to be answered and not treated with contempt. This is a gathering of like minded people, not a festival, if you wish to perform please PM the organiser and I am sure she will explain the situation and maybe able too sort something. |
14 Feb 06 - 05:23 PM (#1668539) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Geoff the Duck This is YORKSHIRE - ergo - we don't PAY no-one.... Quack! GtD. |
14 Feb 06 - 05:37 PM (#1668548) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Les from Hull We are all grateful for Mrs Duck and the work she puts in with this gathering, but I'm sure she doesn't want to be saddled with the title of 'organiser'. The Yorkshire Gathering is not a festival, no one gets 'booked' or 'paid'. It's a gathering of like-minded friends who get together once a year to meet up, exchange news, sing a few songs, play a few tunes, and raise a bit of money for Mudcat. I'm sure that anyone who does turn up will meet many wonderful people and hopefully go away with lots of good memories, having found lots of good friends. Daithi - to get a band booked at UK festivals, you need to try and target thye festivals that you think your band will work at. Send a demo (CD, tape, DVD) to the organiser and keep your fingers crossed. It also helps to work through personal recommendation. If you know anybody who does work on the UK folk festival circuit and is willing to recommend your band, you'll find that may help. Here's wishing you all the best in your endeavours! |
14 Feb 06 - 06:10 PM (#1668574) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Mrs.Duck Nicely said, Les. And I hope noone felt i treated any enquiry with contempt! The Yorkshire gathering welcomes all comers but is not a place to get your band known if you are looking for gigs as it does not allow for the showcase performance of festivals. If, however you would like to come along we would enjoy listening to your music and some might well have connections with festivals. The gathering will have lots of singing and music sessions and is also an opportunity to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. Love to see there. |
14 Feb 06 - 07:36 PM (#1668646) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: The Badger Dear GUEST hopefully helpful Please change your GUEST name to Insiduously Snide. Look forward to seeing you at the gathering. |

15 Feb 06 - 03:56 AM (#1669077) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: GUEST,Dáithí Ó Geanainn Thanks Folks - no offence taken at all. I wasn't sure of the kind of event the Yorkshire Gathering so thanks for explaining. Thanks too Les from hull for the encouragement. We do play folk clubs and pubs around Lincolnshire but are looking to get wider exposure and particluarly at Festivals. Now, off to check my diary... Dáithí |
15 Feb 06 - 04:45 AM (#1669095) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: stallion sadly I am too involved with the York folk day (again) to make it. The York folk day starts the York festival of music and that is set out by the council who fund most of the events (not ours, the pub landlord usually provides the marquee) maybe another weekend some year? |
15 Feb 06 - 04:55 AM (#1669099) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: stallion One for Dáithí , the york gig is a freebie, no money changes hands, but, like the "gathering", it isn't advertised too widely and the great and good of clubs turn up, ie the ones that book acts having heard them live not on disc, we got loads of gigs from last years marquee performance, if you really want it then do the "porridge". Also, the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary so if you want success do the freebies as a shop window. regards Peter |
15 Feb 06 - 07:10 AM (#1669167) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: GUEST,Dáithí Ó Geanainn Thanks for the tips, Stallion. Any where I can find out about the York event, then? Always been happy to put effort in, so no problem. Best wishes - Dáithí |
15 Feb 06 - 08:28 AM (#1669241) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Mrs.Duck If you become a mudcat member Daithi (and its free), you can send messages to any other member via the pm system. Stallion is obviously the one to talk to about the York event. Sadly we never get there as we are always at the Yorkshire gathering which has been held on that particular weekend for the last five years mainly because it was a weekend that didn't clash with bank holidays and other festivals (or so we thought). I will look at the possibility of it moving next year but have a feeling there was something on the other weekends - assuming that is that we make this year so successful that Gary and Tracy will want us back. The Yorkshire gathering begins on Friday night and ends on Sunday so it would be possible to come up and go into York during Saturday if you wanted - we wouldn't be offended :0) |

18 May 06 - 05:34 PM (#1743465) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Mrs.Duck Just delivered caravan to Black Dog ready for the weekend now. Format will be similar to previous years starting tomorrow night with a mixed session tunes and songs (prefereably chorus songs) to get things underway. It can be a noisy session as folk catch up with one another so quieter songs may be better sung later. Throughout Saturday there will be song sessions, music sessions and anything inbetween. The party tent should also be available for whatever (help with erection would be nice). Sunday morning is always an excuse for a big sing and this may well continue until folk drift off. |
18 May 06 - 06:38 PM (#1743516) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: YorkshireYankee Won't be able to get there until Sat afternoon-ish (due to my folk choir having a gig at noon), but have finally persuaded my other half to join me (for a change!). Looking forward to seeing everyone... |

20 May 06 - 04:56 AM (#1744367) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: stallion Well, wasn't that good, having been ejected from our usual venue for the night we had a cracking session in "The Dog". Nice to meet all the hardy 'catters, and me badge, got one at last! I think a new badge is in order, the 'catters St. Swithins Badge, for all those die hards who brave the rain in a campaign tent! Me, I went home and snuggled up in bed! (did I hear "lightwieght"!) However to those who missed last night it was a great session so you have missed out ha, I am sure you will all make up for that today and Sunday, I am otherwise engaged or I would be there . See you all. Peter |

21 May 06 - 08:21 PM (#1745034) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Soldier boy What a really good do ! I had a great night with very special people ! Special thanks to Mr and Mrs duck for organising it and to the landlord and landlady of the Black Dog Inn for being such brilliant hosts. For anybody looking for a very special venue for special occasions/gatherings/partys/piss ups, you can't beat The Black Dog Inn. It has very fine ales, attached gardens for camping (loads of room) and even power points for caravans. And so long as you frequent the bar and spend your spondoolies in the pub there is no charge for camping. How good is that! I fully recommend it. It's on the A1041 near Camblesforth, south of Selby and is in the shadow of Drax power station.. |

I particularly liked the singers/musicians mix this year |
22 May 06 - 06:06 AM (#1745268) Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2006 From: Nick Nice to see you on Friday and had an enjoyable evening - sorry I missed Saturday but I spent the day in York at the Black Swan where I bumped into various people I had seen on Friday. If any of you are ever passing the Thompsons Arms in Flaxton (about 10 miles north of York between the A64 and Sheriff Hutton) on any Wednesday night between 8.30 and closing time you would always be welcome to come and have a sing or a play. Similar sort of mixed evening of songs and tunes. |
