BS: AIM, Gaim, Trillian, input please?

Subject: BS: AIM, Gaim, Trillian, input please?
From: CarolC

I've decided that I hate AIM because they keep putting out more and more intrusive and virtual-memory hogging software. I found an older version that I'm running for the time being, but I have run into a couple of other options that can receive messages from other people who use any of several instant messaging programs.

First I downloaded Gaim, and I think that would probably be my favorite except for one thing. I can't get it to allow me to set my own type size and type font preferences. I can change the size of the type and the font for one message, but I have to keep resetting it every time I type a new message. I'm hoping there's a way I haven't found yet that would allow me to set these preferences to stay that way until I want to change them again. Otherwise, I'll probably uninstall that program. If anyone is familiar with this program and has any helpful advice to offer, I would be grateful.

I also tried Trillian. I like it a lot too, but the size of the box for typing the text is only one line, and I find that rather difficult for a variety of reasons, not the least being my ADD visual clutter issues. I'm hoping there's a way I can change a setting somewhere to allow me to increase the size of the text box. I suspect there isn't, but if anyone is familiar with this program and knows of a way, I would love to hear from you.

As usual, I haven't a clue. Not even the foggiest idea of what you are talking about. Just wanted to say hi. Hi, CC. Hope all is well with you and R and the Clans.

Don't mind me... just in a giddy mood today... +2C and sunny... IN JANUARY!!!

Hi gnu! We're pretty giddy here too. I can't tell you why just yet though. Hope all is well with you and yours also.

CC, I've tried AIM and Trilliam. I've stuck with older versions of AIM.   I've also tried something called something like "Tribal". I stuck with older versions of AIM.

I haven't found anything that's truly satisfactory.

Been using Trillian for years and years... it's a rare box in Trillian that can't be resized by simply clicking and draging the edge of said box....

I just checked, and it's easily done

"Just wanted to say hi"
That's what PMs are for....

Which version of AIM are you using, Rapaire?

Ignore him, gnu. I'm glad you said "hi" here in my thread.

Hi, gnu!

Hurts that the best sorce of assistance is offered freely from someone who thinks yer mostly a waste of breath, but yet can still rise above that?

Thanks Rapaire.

Clintion, your advice didn't work. The only window that gets bigger when I drag the edge of the box is the sent messages window, not the box in which I type the text.

yep...like CH said...Trillian can have it's relative spaces resized to your liking. I've used 'mostly' Trillian for 4-5 years now.

"Miranda" is supposed to be highly configurable if you download all the add-ons and need many tricks, but Trillian does it for me..(and it will load AIM/ICQ/MSN contacts, also...my son came home from college and couldn't get AOL/AIM to work, so I just fired up Trillian and he logged right on.)

However, I did just try dragging the bottom of the box I didn't need to resize, and that resulted in changing the size of the box I did want to change. Problem solved.

"The only window that gets bigger when I drag the edge of the box is the sent messages window"

Drag the top of the TEXT box where you type your message.. that will also work....

Nope. That doesn't work. In my window, it is not possible to drag any of the sides of the text box at all.

There's a line across the top of the 'text' icons (Where you change font size and colour... and add Emoticons) just under the 'chat window' (This is of course provided you're not using an antiquated version of Trillian... there's no point in using old versions of free software) If you grab that you can resize the text box where you type your outgoing message...

You can also make your text line longer (So shrinking the "Send Button") by dragging the space between the two.... You can actually size the "Send" button out of existance.... if you use "Keyboard shortcuts to send IMs, you don't need the "Send button" at all anyway....

Yes. That's the one I was talking about when I said this...

So, what is bottom to some people is top to others....

once again

it's a rare box in Trillian that can't be resized

Since Gaim is an open source program, there's probably a 'config' file in the program folder. If so, try making a copy. Then locate the section that specifies font sizes. Change them, rename the old version 'config.old', and put in the new version using the origional name. If it don't work, change the names back and try something else.

Thanks, mack/misophist.

I have another question for anyone who would like to take a shot at it...

I used to be able to listen to CDs and internet radio on both of the computers I use without experiencing any slowing down of the computers' performance. These days, on the same two computers, if I listen to CDs or internet radio for more than a few minutes, the computer slows down and then eventually freezes up. Anyone know what's causing that, and if there is anything I can do about it?

CDs I don't understand...internet radio may depend on buffering that robs processing power. Playing CDS shouldn't be problem unless you have so little memory that OTHER programs in use are the problem...

That just an off-the-wall guess, though.

(I have a program called TClockEx that puts a time/date/calendar in my taskbar, and as a side benefit, allows me to show a 'memory load line' right under the time display....if I have done whole bunch of stuff that uses memory and doesn't release it, I can see that little green line creeping towards overload...shutting down, then reloading, a browser often clears it...)

I just reset the virtual memory on one of the computers at 2000 initial, 4000 maximum. Does this seem excessive? I don't know yet if it will make a difference.

That's where they got the name for the program from FT...

If you recall, in HHGTTG, Trillian was a 'communications officer'

In your Gaim buddy window, go to Tools --> Preferences. Under "Conversations," click "Message Text." Check the box for "default formatting" and set it the way you want it.
