Vote for Morris

From: GUEST

This just arrived in my in-box - apologies if there's already been a thread about it.

"Earlier this week the government launched ICONS, an initiative to find
the top English icons.

The 180+ nominations included Red London buses, cup of tea, and Andrex
toilet paper (?).

Morris has quickly risen up the rankings and now stands at no. 14 (above
Andrex)

You can vote (or not) for Morris Dancing:

I've voted yes - but in return may I ask any dancers as what wears bells, when they're wanding round festival concert venues (and I'm on), they learn to darn well walk in time to the music!

Having retired from morris after some 25 years I am tempted, but I can't help feeling there are superior claims (market towns & the King James Bible, for instance) to being an essence of Englishness.

Guest,Tom - As doing anything in time is an art which some "dancers" never master, I fear your wish will remain unfulfilled. Of course some of us master the art of walking in bells without making a sound (yes it can be done) but most do not. You may just have to arm the stewards with bolt cutters.

The link is a little confusing ! It would seem you need to go to 'Nominations' from the link given to actually vote !

I've voted & sent it on to my own and various other morris teams as well; what could be *more* iconic?!

It's now been posted on MDDL ~ The Morris Federation's Morris Dance Discussion List, no doubt The Ring & other Morris organisations will see it soon. Have also sent it to a few sides I know. Keep voting.

the one place you are unlikely to find it is on the E-Ceilidh forum. the listmeister is rigidly bullish about anything non-eceilidh - and that rules-out squares, contra, zesty contra (??), cajun &/or French even though Steve can be seen dacning them when there is nothing EC to do locally (say 100 miles)

I clicked the thumbs-up icon - it seemed to agree that I had voted.

I've voted too, I think it only asks for your details if you want to add comments that they might (or might not) publish

I've voted several times. It's now 3rd. Think how the media would have to be nice about folk for once if it came first. Keep voting loads of times.
