17 Jan 06 - 05:39 AM (#1650076) Subject: Vote for Morris From: GUEST This just arrived in my in-box - apologies if there's already been a thread about it. "Earlier this week the government launched ICONS, an initiative to find the top English icons. The 180+ nominations included Red London buses, cup of tea, and Andrex toilet paper (?). Morris has quickly risen up the rankings and now stands at no. 14 (above Andrex) You can vote (or not) for Morris Dancing: click here to vote ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I've voted yes - but in return may I ask any dancers as what wears bells, when they're wanding round festival concert venues (and I'm on), they learn to darn well walk in time to the music! 17 Jan 06 - 07:04 AM (#1650100) Subject: RE: Vote for Morris From: gnomad Having retired from morris after some 25 years I am tempted, but I can't help feeling there are superior claims (market towns & the King James Bible, for instance) to being an essence of Englishness. Guest,Tom - As doing anything in time is an art which some "dancers" never master, I fear your wish will remain unfulfilled. Of course some of us master the art of walking in bells without making a sound (yes it can be done) but most do not. You may just have to arm the stewards with bolt cutters. |
