18 Jan 06 - 04:54 AM (#1650731) Subject: Lyr Req: The Alabama (Victorious) From: Marc I'm familiar with the version of The Alabama that is in the DT, ie Confederate raider sunk by the Kearsarge. However, some years back, John Townley I believe, sang a version at Mystic Seaport describing an earlier battle in her carrier with her being victorious obviously with a different adversary. Anyone care to take a stab at this? Is it recorded any where? In print? Does anyone know how to contact John Townley? Thank you Marc Bernier |

Alabama and the U.S. Gunboat Hatteras, 9 guns, Lieut. Commr. Blake, 140 men, off the coast of Galveston on Sunday, January 11, 1863. The Hatteras was defeated, surrended, and sunk. Happy searching! Probably much the same as Anglo's. He's attempting to produce a CD he recorded back in 1992 on the Zawisza Czarny, a polish schooner, while on it's voyage home. It features the crew including John Townley, Simon Spaulding (though he doesn't mention it) & Marek Siurawski who you can hear doing leads on Roller Bowler & London Julie (he's my source for both these songs)as well as leading a few others that I recognize his voice on John Cherokee, Dead Horse & Goodbye, Fare Thee Well. You can also get to hear John leading as he's provided sound clips for this hopefully soon to be released CD. John has A coulpe of CD's out but I didn't find what you were looking for on the one I had 'A Chesapeake Sailor's Companion'. You'll find his web site, like Anglo said, Yes, this is the same JT.
