In Bulgaria it's Babin Den;
Jan 20 is Grandmother's Day.

Happy Grandmother's Day!

Never hit your granny with a shovel,
It leaves a bad impression on her mind,
        In some other way impart,
All the love that's in your heart,
And remember that she may retort in kind.

"Never Hit Granny," DigTrad filename[ HITGRANN

ALSO:
        Granny's in the cellar,
I'm surprised you canna smell her
Baking biscuits on her damned old dirty stove
In her eye there is some matter,
It keeps dripping in the batter
And she whistles while the [sniff] runs doon her nose.

        Give me that...ho-o-ome cooking...

As learned from Roy Williamson (1936-1990) one ceilidh night at Hillend in 1968
Also in A Prairie Home Companion Folksong Book by Marcia & Jon Pankake, 1988

Who invented Grandmother's Day? What about grandfathers? Uncles? Great uncles? Aunts? Great aunts? Cousins? Second cousins? . . .
And how long has there been a Grandmother's Day - I've been a grandmother for nearly nineteen years and it's the first I've heard of it.

I take it you're not Bulgarian?

In many folk societies Grandmother has a special relationship to grandchildren, especially to grandson. Unique. Sometimes play-sexual, sometimes motherly, sometimes financial (see the complex relationships created in some Australian Aborigine traditions).

But, as we've been reminded, Grannie, nobody should shove you off a bus. You might take some comfort in that.

I wasn't questioning the value of grandmothers - my relationship with my grandson is playful, motherly, financial, and he is a good friend. It's just this 'Day' that comes as a surprise.

I am a children's book author and wrote a beautiful story titled Grandma's Love, published March 2011.   It would be the ideal    book for anyone's grandmother. Why wait until next year!
