Why is everybody saying "absolutely" all the time?

It used to be "excellent" Now it's "absolutely" - gets on my nerves!

I confess, it was me.

I've been pulled up for the use of "absolutely" in the past. Have I suddenly become fashionable? This would be a lifetime first, and quite disconcerting.

Can anyone suggest an alternative which will allow me to revert to my customary obscurity?

No? Well then wouldn't it be courteous for a guest to [like] introduce themselves or if not at least to add something to the mix instead of writin a post that disses people cause they don't use the same language as her or his generation. Like that generation is the only one who has anything of value to say and everyone else must say it that same way? Puleeze! Give me a break.

Subject: RE: Absolutely

'The phrase is first recorded in print in 1947, in Norman Mailer's World War II novel The Naked and the Dead. Mailer has a character say, "'You're fuggin ay,' Gallegher snorted." The actress Tallulah Bankhead claimed she met Mailer at a party and said, "So, you're the guy who doesn't know how to spell fuck." (The story is sometimes told with Dorothy Parker as the speaker.) Mailer told an interviewer he never met Tallulah Bankhead, and in any case he knew how to spell four-letter words--the euphemism was used in order not to offend the sensibilities of readers in 1947. "Fuggin ay" suggests how hard it is to come by cites of one of the (formerly?) most offensive words in the English language--the next print citation of the phrase is from 1955, ". . . freaking-A loud sneeze," where it meant "goddamned."'

A few questions, Courtney. Do you like American Idol a lot? Do you have a tattoo and a couple of piercings? Does your guy wear a baseball cap turned around backwards and pants that are 4 sizes too large and only reach halfway down his calves? Is your hair streaked with pale orange or red or violet parts in it? Or did you go for the Goth look...all black hair and makeup? IMO, Mudcat is like a family. Some of us get along with some of us and some of us don't. But, if some stranger steps in a disses one of us and then has the nerve to diss our entire community, well then, the gloves are off].

From my friend Nils, who served with Army Intelligence (and assures me it's an oxymoron) Fuckin' A is short for fucking affirmative, meaning a rather extreme yes.
Nils is very victiorian about many things, among them vulgar language when ladies are present. But when I mentioned that the villain of a novel I'd written was a crooked right wing politician, and I intended to keep him on the right, he shouted with verve and enthusiasm, F***in A! Followed by an appology.

Why is everybody saying "absolutely" all the time?

Everybody's not! At most, "absolutely" is regularly said by about 500,000,000 people. Given that the world's population is about 5,000,000,000 people, that's only one out of every ten people saying "absolutely". The other nine out of ten are saying "absolument", "absolutamente", "absolut" or about a hundred other words that aren't even written in the same alphabet we use. Believe me, there are millions of rice farmers in Cambodia and Laos who've never said "absolutely".

"Why fucking A, Peace? Why not fucking B or C?"

well, as matter of fact, it is none of the above!

The expression was origionally "Fuckin' AYE!" as in YES!, RIGHT!.....but someone (or a number of 'someones') saw it in print, and had no idea how to pronounce "aye" and so said "A" verbally.....and off we went, with no one knowing quite why A was used instead of B....

do a Google search and you'll find MANY examples of AYE and a few explanations. (I first heard it in 1970, in a warehouse as "AYE" and was bewildered when 20 years later, I started hearing "A".

(no...you don't need to tell me "the language evolves", I know that....it evolves even more when people don't stop to ask themselves what they are saying!)
