BS: Uploading Ringtones to my phone?

Subject: BS: Ringtones for free?
From: Joe Offer

I have to say I'm not impressed with the ringtones available with the Samsung cellphone I got from Cingular. "Humoresque" is OK, and I'd like "Whiter Shade of Pale" better if my stepson hadn't already chosen it. I got a coupon from Cingular for a free ringtone, so I downloaded "Hatikvah.mid."

Still, I'd like a bit more variety, and I hate the idea of paying $1.99 for a ringtone. I want something that expresses the real ME!

So, is there a way I can sequence a MIDI ringtone and upload it to my phone?

And, for that matter, is it "cellphone," "cel phone," or "celphone"?

Joe, I just set the ol' cell phone on "vibrate."

It expresses me quite well, I think.

Carry it in yer front pocket, do ya? It where I keep my fire pager. At my age, it's a help. I await calls with bated breath.

Joe -

Lin in Kansas says she put her own (Being a Pirate) in hers, but she'll have to look it up to remember how. I believe what she did was punch it in on the keypad and just save it, using functions in her (really cheap) Nokia. It's sort of like writing an abc.

An attempt to look at her phone and tell me what she did ended with "duh... and then .... duh ..." (we both have CRS) but she says her manual told her how to program ringtones using the keypad. Her result is "crude," especially the timing, but it's recognizable. I don't know what keys you'd use to play a BRRUMMPH.

If it's a common phone, you probably can find the manual you tossed on the web. If your phone happens to be a Nokia I can probably find an addy.

Downloading stuff on her cheapo seems to require accessories we didn't bother with, or lots of minutes for web connection, but someone should know how to get decent tunes on.

I bought some software so I can download the photos from my phone into my computer without having to pay Sprint a monthly fee to upload them to their system then download to my computer. That software also has some ringtones, and I think it allows some fooling around with other stuff to make it into a ringtone.

It's SnapMedia from FutureDial. I bought it online for $20 or so. It's about $50 at RadioShack.

There's another thread discussing silent movie music. I'd love to upload Hurry Music (for struggles) for use as a ringtone...
It does seem as though Cingular and Samsung have set it up so it's far easier to buy phone software than it is to do-it-yourself.

I've been trying forever to find out how to create my own ringtones on my Motorola V551, including asking the question in this thread: thread.cfm?threadid=63255#1031266

The manual instructions do not exist for my phone, and the people at Motorola and at Cingular have no clue or are unwilling to share this information in order to boost sales of downloads. If anyone knows how to use the cellphone number pad to create melodies, I'd love to know how (still).

If you can't decide how to spell whatever you call it, try calling it something else - like a mobile phone. My PIM does that.

"I want something that expresses the real ME!

That's why I prefer the 'analog' ring tone of bygone days.

Yes! I also want an analog ring of "bygone days" but haven't figured out where to get it or make it (haven't taken the time). My daughter has done all sorts of stuff with her phone, so depending on the ring she knows who is calling. I am not that interested (and no one calls me on my cel phone because they know I usually leave it off and it's a glorified message machine).

my OLD Nokia let me program in tones nicely, but my newer one does not, I suspect they have a 'marketing relationship' with the ringtone vendors.

Not only that, the scurfy phone provider (T-Mobile) let some scurfy ringtone seller (Jamster) send us crap we never asked for and it shows up on our bill and they WON'T REMOVE IT. The ringtone seller has no address, no email, no way to reach them except through their ephemeral phone lines and 'feedback form'. Be very careful with these creepy outfits, they are not like Ma Bell which removes any disputed charges. And never let the kids near your phone if they're into ringtones or just like to push buttons, who knows what you can be signed up for.

Joe –

A little research on the "composable" tunes that Lin used indicates that her phone allows you to compose tunes, but can't download any additional tones. There are a few preloaded ones, and you can compose ONE of your own. Mine can download additional tones, but doesn't have the "Composer" function.

Apparently it depends on the phone, and my bit of poking around indicates that none of the makers do a very good job of telling you what you're gonna get – or what you're stuck with once they get your money.

Compare Phones at Motorola indicates some phones as having preset MP3 and/or MIDI ring tones, some as having downloadable MP3 and/or MIDI and some as having "composable" ring tones. Any and all combinations seem to be available, but if you've got the wrong phone you're stuck.

Motorola has links that should take you to where you can look at operating manuals, somewhere in the "Support" sections, so if you can find your phone, or one that has the feature you want, you may be able to study up on the feature – although I'd guess that the information they'll provide will be on the skimpy side.

Note that at this point I only know what the phone makers tell me on the web, so I can't claim much. I have seen web offers of ring tones that imply that "there are ways" to put ringtones of your own making on phones, although it might be assumed that you have to have a phone that accepts downloaded ones and possibly one with a computer interface. The wrong phone could beat you on either count.

As to your earlier questions:

Most fo the web sites spell it "cell phone" but there's a lot of variation. Motorola likes "wireless communication device."

PIM has several "translations" but "Programmable Interface Memory" is one that's sort of common. Basically it's a bit of memory that contains the operating instructions for the "Interface" required by a service provider and for personalizing your phone and storing messages and such. It sort of works like the BIOS in your PC, and some of them are "programmable" so that if you want to switch to another provider they can "flash" the memory. Cheaper phones are often locked to a specific provider and the "PIM" isn't removable or reprogrammable. (The "fixed" ones are often called "SIM" devices - no translation known.) Again, you get what you got, and they're not too helpful about what you can do with it.

SIM card is the little thingy that snaps into the phone.
i just got a replacement phone and this is the first time
i have had one with a chip like that...a printed circuit
card of some sort...probably a big brother device to track
you, and tell if you are a terrorist or something?

but i do think that the GSM phone can be programmed to work
over seas..perhaps by putting in a different card...

the ring tones on the new phone are all lame, and the games
are, too. the games are only samples and only last for a few
tries then you are supposed to buy them. oh well, I do not
need to play "Snake" any way...

what type of phone do you have? nokia has some interesteing
devices and features...i have not tried to use the internet
connect feature....not sure i need it to do all that stuff..
when i got it i just asked for one i could get and receive
voice calls on...do not need photo, e-mail, and all that..

like those office machines that copy, fax, scan, and all,
just one more thing to break or go wrong then it is all kaput.
speking of which perhaps there is info on the
"cell phone kaput" thread
http://www.sunncity.com/music/ringtone4me.html
http://www.cingular.com/media/ringtones_graphics

i guess you do mean upload instead of down load..
good luck and let us know what you find,
I think my daughter was able to record me singing
a song and get her phone to play that when it rings..

one of the premises of the book "future shock" is
the complicated choices we are faced with these days..
such as ring tones, graphics, etc.!!

Joe--

Check out this Web site: World Irish Music. They claim that they will convert any of their midis to ringtones and download them to your phone. Don't know how well this works, as my phone is "non-downloadable" (or whatever term you care to use).

They do have some nice American folk song midis, though. I have put several of them into my music files on my computer.

Good luck and enjoy!

Joe, put it back onto Humoresque and sing out loud with the rugby-footballers parody:

While the train is in the station,
please refrain from urination,
have regard for railway property.
If you want to pass some water,
go and ask a railway porter.
He will guide you to   the   lavatory.

Well, it would express MY personality, anyway.
