Happy! – Jan 22 (Sandy Paton)

Happy Birthday!

To the man Dr John Greenway (1962) called "the best interpreter
of traditional singing in the English-speaking world, with
the possible but not probable exception of Ewan MacColl."

Scholar and co-founder of Folk-Legacy Records (an American treasure),

Sandy Paton

was born

1/22/1929

He and Caroline Paton were the official State Troubadours of Connecticut for 1996. We are quite impressed by this but Sandy takes pains to point out that this high honor should be considered together with that given to the praying mantis, Connecticut's official state insect.

(Check out the very nice biography at AllMusic Guide.)

Congratulations from the boot-heel of Missouri. And for those of you who know Sandy only from the posts here on the 'Cat, he is one heck of a performer as well as a very nice person. When he is combined with Caroline they are about as good as it can get for folk music. What one doesn't know, the other does. I suspect they know all the folksongs in the known universe. They would both have to be saints to put up with Jerry.   (tee hee!)    :-)

Happy Birthday, Sandy, to one of my most favorite people in the world and the person I've been able to call "friend" longer than anyone else. I hope that your day is all you would want it to be and more. I am sorry that I was unable to spend at least a part of it with you but will see you soon.

Happy birthday and much love,
k

I dunno' what's the matter with y'all sometimes.......You need to take another look at this old coot before heaping so much lavish praise in his direction! Like, uh, it' just ain't all sweetness and light with the Phoalk Phoagey ya' know...........This ol' poop's got a dark side..............

Didja' know that one time this guy gave some poor, hard-working, southern, waitress hell, pretty much demanding his eggs come NOW even though the grits weren't ready? Eggs without grits is just not done in the southern U.S. and of course the poor lass was traumatized by the virulent and harsh dressing down she received from this Paton character.

And then there was the time that Cletus and Paw went clear up to Connecticut to make an honest offer on a Larrivee that was laying around and damn if this shyster didn't take poor Cletus to the cleaners. Cletus came home really upset and pretty much in a deep depression because instead of the entire guitar, Sandy had sold him only the soundhole......and at an outrageous price I might add! I think what really put Cletus over the edge though was that Sandy had not even included a set of strings.

Then he sent me a damn cap from Folk Legacy and I never got to wear it even once because Karen immediately claimed it for her personal driving cap. Put me in a funk right away I tell you. Of course this would never have happened had he kept his damn cap to himself!

The list goes on and on but I 've been around here since '98 and I know that any criticism of this aging icon falls on deaf ears so I might as well just forget it and like everyone else wish him a happy birthday like everyone else.........so happy birthday............and by the way Sandy, I just sent you that Larrivee soundhole back in yesterday's mail and THIS TIME the joke is on you because it's coming COD.......and we took the strings back off too!!!

Spaw

And ... many happy returns also Sandy! I thought you'd like to know that out here in Seattle, Lake Union still is floating, the Mountlake Bridge is still ABOVE the ship canal, houseboats still encompass the shorelines, the "ave" is remarkably unchanged, and I think the cops have ceased to look for you! It's now safe to return for a visit! Your friend, Bob Nelson (by the way, I'm being pressured to write another article on Walt)

Happiest of days to you, dear one--and many more circles 'round the sun to you. For 35 (!!!) years now I've benefited from your musical inspiration, friendship, love of language, laughter, and awesome knowledge of more topics than most Ph.D.s I know. Thanks for being wonderful you.
Much love,

Am I a trigamist then? Jaqui, Kathy, and Caroline. As the song says, "Oh, I am a lucky man!" Caroline and I shared a delightful celebratory brunch with bbc this noon. Then I watched the Seahawks make it to the Superbowl, Bob (Deckman), with my grandson joining me as we cheered them on, sort of for old times' sake. Swapped a few other recollections with an old-time pal from Seattle (even older than I) who called to surprise me with the tenacity of his memory. It was a good day.
Thanks, dear ones all, for your kind wishes. As Dick observes, gettin' old ain't much fun, but it beats the hell out of the alternative.
Stay well and warm, good people.
    Sandy

We were up in Rockford most of today and I just now saw this.--- Sandy, have many, many more!! Congratulations----and this year turn off the smoke alarms before you light the candles...

Yep, as I'm fond of saying: "Another year, another dollar!!" --- I sure never figured that first time I heard you sing at that Sunday afternoon hootenanny at Chicago's GATE OF HORN (1959) that you and Caroline would become such great friends through all these incandescent music-filled years. When you asked me to join the Folk Legacy family, it felt so absolutely right---it was such a huge honor for me -- that it really did feel like I was going home! Well, old friend and mentor---THANK YOU---for all of it.

And the beat goes on...

Love,

Art and Carol

SANDY....sorry to be a day late but, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and many of them. It is 30 years ago this year that I made my first trip to the USA and was lucky enough to meet you and Caroline. I have valued your friendship ever since. Later this year I am coming to the east coast on a 30th anniversary tour that will also be my last time over. Advancing years and retreating bank balance make it so. I do hope we can meet up somewhere.    Elaine joins me in sending best wishes to you and to Caroline.

Holy crap!!
      —Frank Barone

Sandy's even older than I am!! [76 comin' up, but let's not rush it!] I've been following his career all these years, but I haven't seen him since the Berkeley Folk Festival in 1960. And I haven't yet had the honor of meeting Caroline.

Gotta agree with Bob the Deckman. Most of Seattle is still hear, except that Interstate 5 cuts a ditch right through the middle of the downtown area. And the new Seattle Public Library is all steel and glass and looks a bit like a sloppily stacked pile of books.

I can't totally agree that the U. District is still the same though. Cockroach Manor (1, 2, and 3, and the Org House) are now a parking lot, Leo's is no longer there, and I think there's a Starbuck's or two around there somewhere. The Coffee Corral is now something else—and the former Hasty Tasty (use to serve great hamburgers, even if the place did reek of rancid grease) is now a vegetarian restaurant (I burst into tears every time I go by it!). Dora Broberg ("Do you want to play a guitar, or do you want to play a drum!??" bless her heart!) is, of course, long gone, and the Broberg House of Music (used to keep at least one model of every Martin in the catalog in stock at all times) is now something like a storefront religious revival center (!). Fitting, perhaps. We all used to go up and worship in front of our favorite model Martin. And naturally, such treasures are traditionally guarded by a dragon (Mrs. B., of course. Again, bless her heart. I got to really liking the old bat!)

Anyway, I definitely second Bob's recommendation that you come out and look around, do the nostalgia thing, and get together and swap a song or two. Or three. Or four. Or. . . .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Don Firth

What the hell is this? Are we getting so damn cheap we have to recycle birthday threads? I mean we seem to do it to those we should honor (or whatever) a bit more. Last time it was Jean's and now Sandy's! I wouldn't give a turkey it we recycled mine or Mick's or some other worthless piece of effluvia but fer the luv-a-mike....Can't we at least spare a bit of bandwidth now and again? Hellfire,we even ran a Winona Ryder birthday thread..........'course that was because widdle Pamby boy was on a rip. Anyway..........

Sandy, whatever I said up there, go read it again and figure that's it. Now if I said something bad, let me know and I'll put in something better. I'm not going to waste my time reading that tripe!

Happy Birthday and a hug to that poor lady who has to put up with you!

I'm only recognizing SBDs these years -- Significant Digit Birthdays. These, generally speaking, are those ending in zeros. If I'm still around for another two years, Spaw, I'd be delighted to have you initiate a fresh SBD message.
Where in Kansas are you, Lin? I always stop by Salina on my drives to the left coast to see old Berkeley friends and my Bay Area family. Hafta check out the changes in the old town since they kicked me out of Salina High in 1943 (or was it 1944?). My best friend from those dark ages now lives in Topeka, so I'm less inclined to stop over for long.
I'll get back to Seattle some day, Don, but it'll be tough to observe the destruction to my most memorable hangouts. The Coffee Corral is gone? (Coffee for a dime; seven cents if you drank it black!) Probably replaced by a Starbucks. Are the houseboats on Portage Bay still dumping their wastes right into the water on which they float? Surely not in these more enlightened times. That's what we did so thoughtlessly when I rented one of them fifty-four years ago. Hard to imagine it now!
We'll get to one of your house concerts, Sinsull, as soon as we can find someone to run the bloody business while we're away. This being an big industry mogul has its drawbacks. Yeah, our sons could do it, but they've both got REAL jobs.
Kidding aside, kids: Thanks for your good wishes. Gettin' old really bites, but it's less distressing when there are friends to ease the pain.
    Hisownself.

Hope it was a happy day.

Psychologists state that Jan 22nd is the most miserable day of the year; people are suffering post holiday blues, New Years' resolutions fail, the credit card bills come in, people in the UK realise there are only 9 days left to get their tax returns in on time...

If only they knew.....!
