BS: Lib Dems self destruct again

22 Jan 06 - 11:39 AM (#1653465)
Subject: BS: Lib Dems self destruct again
From: Arnie

What is it about the Lib Dems that causes them to self-destruct so spectacularly and with such regularity? In an echo of the Jeremy Scott affair, we hear today that Mark Oaten, who last week was in contention in the leadership race, has resigned from the front bench. Turns out that the News of the Screws was about to expose his antics with a 20-yr old rent boy. Now Oaten is a married man with two young daughters, so you might have thought his predilections lay elsewhere. But no, being a Lib Dem this would have proved too boring and predictable. Wonder what his missus and kids think of his antics? It makes Charles Kennedy's misdemeanour seem a bit more acceptable - maybe they'd consider bringing him back......

You won't get much reaction Arnie.

Rar left radicals here only want to rant about Bush because he is in power and Teddy Kennedy is out drinking somewhere or trying to look up Barbara Boxer's skirt.

Hey MG .... Teddy is a damn good senator ... even if he does take a few too many pops of whiskey ... and if he wants to look up Barabara Boxer's skirt let him.

Oh, piss off. Why does every discussion have to be hijacked by yanks who assume it's all about them? This is the British Liberal Party we're talking about.

For what it's worth, Charles Kennedy probably drank a lot less that either Ted Kennedy or Winston Churchill. His mistake was to deny it when what he should have said is 'Fuck off, it's none of your business'.

Oaten's mistake was (allegedly) to pay young men to let him bugger them. This is never a good idea, in my view. Either the payment or the buggery.

I already started a thread on this called Home Affairs. You must be careful using the word liberal in front of an American with or without a capital L at the beginning, as it's a dirty word in their 'pay and display' version of politics. Much better if we use the term Liberal Democrats, not only is it more accurate in the context of the UK political party, it also confuses people to whom Liberal and Democrat mean two totally different things!
Hee hee.

Guest Chris B, I am not a bigot because the homosexual/gay lifestyle is just too precious to you and is just a special interest group that says that's it's proud for it's adventures in sodomy.

I don't think Spielberg will win the oscar, but I would rather see that movie win than a movie about flaring hemmorids while on a horse.

M.Ted - I've just had a look at the link you provided to Mark Oaten's website. What a load of sanctomonious claptrap. I wonder what the updated version will say - or even if there will ever be an updated version? Probably something like "I emphatically deny ever paying a 20-yr old rent boy to dress up in football strip - he told me that he was 24!!" Maybe his wife would like to set up a rival website and let us have her views on the matter.....

Might of fact, I hope the liberals don't gain much traction fir a while... Timing isn't right... When it's time for progressives (liberals) to take back the country, everyone except a few stubborn industrialist will know it...

Rar left radicals here

I take it that means "far left" rather than "rare left".

It's worth pointing out that, by US standards, all significant parties in the United Kingdomm (and most of the less significant ones) would count as "far left".

And I don't think anyone could seriously suggest that scandals about policians private lives are more (or less) frequent on the left right or centre of politics anywhere.

The real damage to the parties isn't so much the shock caused as the derision that it gives rise to. Which tends to spill over into derision directed at politicians generally, because any affair like this immediately revives memories of the ones involving leading politicans from other parties (and the papers make a point of reminding people in case they have forgotten).

Chris, you know that Martin Gibson? I'll give you a little advice.

At a zoo there was one particular chimapnzee, who, for some reason, had this habit of flinging his faeces at people if he though they were threatening him, and some of the group started copying him, but most of them wished he would stop, as the faeces ended up in their food.

Over time, a group of people came to see these chimps again and again, and they gradually started to stop seeing everyone as a threat, and so started behaving a bit better, But every now and again, someone comes along and bangs on their cage and shouting and such like, and then this chimp would go back to his old habits.

So the zoo put up a sign saying "Do not bang on the cage or you will end up covered in shit."

Right now Chris, you're shouting really loudly.

Do you mean that you voted for Senator Richard Durbin, Martin?--There was once a Senator Durkin, but he was from New Hampshire--but that aside, the fact that you voted for both of Illinois' Democratic Senators will rattle a few hereabouts to the bone.

Of course, it has been an article of faith hereabouts that you are a registered, dyed-in-the-wool Conservative Republican, but as I think about it, you've never exactly said that--Not that that would matter in Illinois, where, it is said, the Republican votes don't count;-)--

M Ted, I am from chicago, which is highly democratic and so is basically the whole state.   However, up until current Gov Blagovich, the state had been run by Republican governors for the last 20 years.

Blago is currently treading on thin ice, with the only Republican to currently hold statwide off, Treasurer Judy Topinka, the front runner. so far she gets my vote because of integrity.

The misconception is that I am a Republican. I am not. I am a true independent.

I will vote for the best candidate, based on the issues, based on my perception of integrity of the candidate. Yes, I voted for Durkin, but I am sorry I did. His integrity is not there. yes, I voted for Bush, but would have been sorrier if I voted for Kerry.

Subject: RE: BS: Lib Dems self destruct again

Martin,

They used to say that if you were a true Independent, it meant you had nobody to call at city hall. And there's also the thought that "political candidate with integrity" is an oxymoron.   Being from a big city like Chicago, though, you know that politics is just another form of entertainment--

I know about being sorry about voting for a candidate, though--our County Executive is the backstabbingest son-of-a-bitch in the state--he's running for Governor now, and if he makes it out of the primaries, I'll vote for the incumbent, who, though he is a mean bastard, is at least honest about it--

...Only without the humour or subtlety. I honestly don't give a toss if Simon Hughes is another uphill gardener, but what does bother me is that he only won his seat for the Liberal Democrats in the 1983 Bermondsey byelection on the strength of a media witchhunt against the openly gay Labour candidate, Peter Tatchell (a brave and decent man, by the way).

Jeremy Thorpe must be laughing his arse off.

They haven't 'self-destructed'. It would be more accurate to say that individuals have been subjected to the usual dirt-digging and trial-by-newspaper that we get in the UK every time there's any sort of selection/election process going on. I strongly suspect that the majority of voters care far more about the candidates' politics and whether he'll do a good job of representing them than they do about whether he's a fudge-ferret.

Homosexuality and alcoholism have always been around in political circles, nothing new or remarkable about that.

Simon Hughes' response to questions from snivelling dirt-digging journalists about his sexual preferences should have been "None of your business", and he should have stuck to that. That, at least, is the truth, and giving a different answer was his only error.

I agree with Strolling johnny. A consistint line of 'none of your business' would have been sensible. By not making these silly things into an issue by changing stories etc, the canidates could get a bit more attention on their policies.

There have been enough leadership contests round here for them to have watched and learnt you would have hoped!

It is true that "none of your business" would have been the correct ansswer - had he not hounded Peter Tatchell for being homosexual at the time of the Bermondsey By-election in 1983.

He has just apologised for the actions of Liberals in the campaign, saying that I regret that in a campaign, actually run often by agents and organisers, the candidate does not have nearly as much say as perhaps they should have, but I take responsibility". "I have never been comfortable about the whole of that campaign, as Peter knows, and I said that to him in the past . . . Where there were things that were inappropriate or wrong, I apologise for that.

He also denied within in the past few days he was bi-sexual, and decided to tell the truth only when he was presented with incontrovertible evidence that he had been talking on all male chat lines. (It is believed they had his mobile-phone records). That was when he decided to tell the world in the "Sun" that he had relationships with both men and women.

Not the best way of handling things IMHO.
