24 Jan 06 - 10:10 AM (#1654800) Subject: UK theme lost from R4 From: Keith A of Hertford Are there other insomniacs and early risers who will miss this? A medley of British folk song tunes in an unusual arrangement that included a composite of Drunken Sailor and Greensleeves. For now to be replaced with yet another news bulletin, but I wonder if a collection of "World Music" is planned. |

24 Jan 06 - 10:22 AM (#1654812) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: GUEST, Topsie It's on at about 5.30 a.m. when the World Service gives way to Radio 4. I got really tired of it, but surely we don't need yet another news bulletin. Five minutes of World Music would be good - perhaps it could change regularly, say every month, to give people a chance to get to know a piece well without tiring of it (and 'World' could include the British Isles, of course). |
24 Jan 06 - 12:03 PM (#1654893) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: Lanfranc As a long-term insomniac who has half-heard this compilation of British song tunes more times than I care to mention, I seem to recall that it has gone through a number of arrangements over the years. I don't believe it is broadcast on the World Service, just on Radio 4, so I don't feel that World Music would be a suitable alternative. Perhaps they couldn't find a new arrangement and couldn't be bothered to dig out an earlier version. As has been said, another news broadcast is a somewhat anodyne way to start the day, even if the "theme" had become stale. An arrangement of less cliched songs might be one way forward, but it doesn't sound as if they are open to suggestions, anyway. Alan |
24 Jan 06 - 08:26 PM (#1655131) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: billybob not only will I miss it , I may over sleep!!A wonderful way to wake up, even worse, now John Peel is gone they are taking off the best prog. on the beeb on Sat morning at 9 am.Save Home Truths for goodness sakes! |
25 Jan 06 - 03:52 AM (#1655257) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: Lancashire Lad I would certainly miss it. Depending on my sleep pattern the Radio 4 theme either wakes me up, or I am lulled to sleep with "sailing by" after the shipping forcast. I would rather awaken to this than the news headlines (usually bad) Cheers LL |
25 Jan 06 - 04:03 AM (#1655262) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: John MacKenzie Mark Damazer the controller of radio 4 wants to live up to his christian name by making his mark, he may come closer to his surname by being damned by old Radio4 addicts like myself. Home Truths has lost its sparkle since John Peel died, and he is a hard act to follow. However David Stafford is a disaster, he sounds like a huckster injecting artificial enthusiasm into his every pronounciation. It needs someone with the individuality of a Fi Glover or an Andy Kershaw, neither of whom I like. There is an ideal presenter on Radio Scotland called Tom Morton, who has just the right mix of warmth and cynicism, combined with a wry sense of humour. I'm afraid though as someone who spends most of Feedback shouting at the anodyne, couldn't care less responses to criticism by listeners, of radio producers and controllers, nothing we say will make any difference. 25 Jan 06 - 05:09 AM (#1655296) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: Gervase The UK theme was, for many years, an essential part of my day - if I wasn't in the car on the way to work when it started, I was late. For me it brings back memories of gorgeous sunrises and drizzly dark winter mornings. I can see no reason to get rid of it for yet more news, trailers and speculation. As for Home Truths - that's one programme that gets me lunging for the 'off' switch on a Saturday morning - "Let's go... And why not axed Thought for the Day and Prayer for the Day while they're about it? As a secular humanist, it gets my goat that the BBC ring-fences areas where people can blather utter tripe without fear of contradiction, let alone comment. |
25 Jan 06 - 06:08 AM (#1655323) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: GUEST,neovo For me it ranks with the shipping forecast as one of those comforting constants in radio listening. I heard somebody has set up a website with a petition to save the theme but I've not been able to find it. Does anybody out there have the link? |

25 Jan 06 - 10:09 AM (#1655441) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: Zany Mouse I listen to the radio a lot during the night and always used to listen to World Service (not a lot of choice really if you don't want pop music). The UK Theme was always a relief as it usually meant more interesting programmes. Now though, I listen to BBC7 - there is a god in the BBC after all Rhiannon |

He/she plays a duff note... pauses for a bar or three, then comes back in. Love sailing by - mistakes and all Hate the uk theme thing. All that smart ass two-tunes-at-once malarky. Good riddance. |
25 Jan 06 - 05:49 PM (#1655627) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: GUEST The "UK" theme embodies a lot of my dislikes about music (I won't go into them here), but of course it's become imbued with the romance of the time of day it inhabits, so for that reason I've grown to like it and will miss it (although I'm rarely up that early). |
25 Jan 06 - 05:56 PM (#1655636) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: greg stephens I can't say I love the piece of music wildly, it's had a good run for its money, maybe its time has come. Except, as we know very well, it's one of the few places where they play folk tunes on radio 4(even if in a tricksy neo-classical style). But at least they are playing them. I do think Radio 4 has a duty to portray British vernacukar culture, and I fear this is another bit they are going to eliminate in favour of yet more news with clever-dick computer editing. A depressing thought. But they had better keep their hands off "Sailing By" or they will find out what serious trouble is like. |
26 Jan 06 - 09:08 AM (#1655896) Subject: RE: UK theme lost from R4 From: Bunnahabhain It's a cut down version of Sir Henry Woods Fantasia on British sea songs. It therefore streches the term sea song rather, and british somewhat as well. I had a long rant earlier, but the post got eaten, and other people have covered most of the points. I do wish they would keep their hands off little bits of Britishness like that, and not fiddle with stuff for it's own sake. |

For persons who change work shifts at 06.00 from nights, this is the point of pleasure that the 'Time to go Home' (another remembered radio theme) is almost arrived.
