As mentioned in another thread, we have decided to put this coming Sunday session into the Sun Inn.

So, we now have:

First Sunday of the month - Monk's Walk: Hosted by Mick McGarry
Second and Fifth Sundays - Sun Inn: Hosted by me
Third and Fourth Sundays - Hodgsons: Hosted by John Nixon/John Yeaman

Also Tuesday's Acoustic Workshop is in the sun every week hosted by Tom Hall and me.

Friday evenings are also in the Sun every week hosted by Graham and Jo

Also on Tuesdays is the tunes/pipes session in the Woolpack with Gerard

As a result of the closure of the Sun Inn the Tuesday night "acoustic workshop" will move to the back room at the Monk's Walk as of this coming Tuesday.

An hour or so of playing from music until about 9.30 then a sing/playaround for the rest of the night.

We had our first Tuesday session in the Monk's Walk yesterday and it went well.

Although I know that we are at Hodgson's this coming Sunday, I would like to see the Sun Sunday sessions coming to the Monk's in future - the beer is better. The pattern then would be:

First, second and occasional fifth Sundays in Monk's

Third and fourth Sundays at Hodgson's

Any opinions on that?

sorry to hear you have been unwell rog -I have spent 4 days in a different bed with the same thing- I know there is the beer argument but I find the smoke in the Monk;s just about unbearable so tend to avoid there -there is a light on in the Sun most days what s going on?

Yes, Mick I spoke to her on Tuesday after our first acoustic workshop there. She says that she would happily have us in every Sunday! But I did emphasis that this is a collective and that it would have to go to the vote to see if we went there on the 2nd and 5th weeks.

Linda - I was hoping that we might hold the extra sessions in the back room (with the open fire) where the smoke dissipates better due to there being no ceiling.

That's great Rog.it certainly gets my vote.
Appreciate the concerns of the non smokers amongst us, but I did put the idea of moving back into that room a while ago and most people seemed to want to remain in the bar. After saying that it worked very well at the Bev. festival so maybe we give it a try and see how it goes.

Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006

The Monksd Tuesday night is ok in the end bit of the bar - its sort of separated from the main bar but sort of connected if you get my drift. Problem was the huge roaring fire that toasted anyone too close. Rest of the room was cool enough. Not sure if it is large enough for Sunday Session but smoke would at least have somewhere to rise.

Hodgsons is a good playing venue and the Guiness is ok but I am told the other beer is not too good and expensive. Mine Host at Hodgsons is ok if a little uninterested. I think there is a function on on the 19th but we could confirm this Sunday and decided were to go. Another offer was the Tiger - landlord is keen but rooms at back are small and large room has thick carpet and loads bookings.

See you all Sunday

Simon and his partner came into Hodgesons latish on Sunday.Unfortunatley most people had gone, but those who remained left them in no doubt on our feelings about the "Sun" and "Enterprise Inns"

After what can only be described as a frank, open and positive discussion,my impression is that Simon and his partner are commited to get the "Sun" back on track both as a great pub and an even better music venue.

We are meeting in the "Monks" this coming Sunday were we will fill all who are intrested in with more detail.

I wish to assure all our loyal fans, friends, musicians and singers who have supported the "Monks Walk" session on the first Sunday of the month, that whatever happens in the future that session will continue to run.

Was.n't making a big thing of the smoking thing at Monk's certainly don't want people to accomodate changes just for me-happy just to accept that I can't go there and be comfortable. Although a non smoker I unfortunately am prone to breathing problems - I am 10 days in to an horrendous chest infection at the moment which I cannot shake off! Lets just hope the Sun is up and running soon and thank goodness we have a choice of venues with Landlords happy to accomodate us!

Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006
From: oombanjo

As I had left when Simon & partner arrived John gave me the gist of the meeting. A thought on this is that it is not just the relief landlords that we want to sit down with, it's also a full time representetive from the brewery, as we are all fully aware without their full commitment to put right the general workings of the pub,and commitment to produce a lasting landlord, it just aint gonna work . So if Simon and his partner are following this thread, set up the meeting, let us know the venue time and date and we will be there to meet you, none of us want to see the pub go but it has to be brought into good order, also the committee fringe will be there, Cheers Oombanjo. ps I'll be at Gainsborough this week end for the first of the year Old time music fest.have a goodun

Yes I do agree John that meeting with a rep fom the brewery is a good idea. But in fairness to Simom and his partner I think it is worth mentioning that this is the first time ever any one from the "Sun" has bothered to meet with us in whatever capacity, that has to be step in the right direction. As Missisipi JoHn has probably mentioned we was told that the "Sun" would not open untill the pub was put into first rate order.

Over to you Simon.

Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006
From: Sir Roger de Beverley

I visited the Sun this afternoon whilst out walking the dog. Here are my first impressions:

Positive:

1.        It was open
2.        It was clean
3.        The toilets were not leaking
4.        Simon & Terry were friendly
5.        The quality of the Landlord bitter was good
6.        The fires were lit and all of the lightbulbs were working
7.        Blues band advertised for 26th Feb and also some Irish band on 4th March

Negative:

1.        The price of the beer has gone up
2.        Naff background music and TV with sound on playing at same time. One or the other - but for me neither would be the best option for this heritage pub.
3.        The pool table is still there – this pub has managed without one for 400 years until a recent landlord put it in a few months ago. It detracts from the ambience of the pub and can hardly justify the rental cost with what it takes. Also the pub is short of seating and needs all the room it can get – the pool table takes up space previously occupied by tables and chairs (not to mention where we used to run our Tuesday night session)
4.        The jelly bean dispensers are still there – see pool table comments above
5.        The "Wer'e(sic) not gay by the way" sign above the bar could be taken the wrong way by some.

Sorry to harp on about smoking but take heed from me, I have been in hospital (coronary care) three weeks out of the last four and i am waiting to be refered to leeds to have an operation or two. I have only drunk beer in moderation and have never ever smoked. Being a singer I often take in diaphragms full of smokey air and this has been flagged as serious contender for the cause of the problem. Now I am not a spoil sport but hey try smoking less, give the non smokers a choice rather than lump it, maybe even have fag breaks or smokeless hours. Accomodate everyones needs like asking for better ventilation, constant bickering of two intransigent parties isn't civilised. I am not saying don't smoke just bear in mind that it is exceedingly nauseous for non smokers to be in a smoke filled atmosphere. Sort it out

20 Feb 06 - 02:57 AM (#1673537)
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006
From: GUEST,ossanscookie

Who is bickering? The people who attend the Beverley sessions know that smoking is allowed . We are all adults and are fully aware of the issue as is people who come - or stay away - from our sessions. Like smoking that is their choice.

The sessions are held in Public houses were smoking is allowed, so it would be intresting to see the reaction of a few of the regulars if we put one or two of your suggestions to them.

So thank you for your well meaning concerns and thoughts, but we don't need them ramming down our throats on every occasion and in every thread.

Well said Osson! To turn the thread away from the whingers, a few of us had a bit of a tune session in The Sun last night, all jolly good fun. When we set up in the back room the pool table was in the way and the TV was blasting out football. BUT once the landlord knew what we were up to, nothing was too much trouble. The telly went off, the pool table was kicked out of the way and a jolly night ensued.
Cheers from sunny Humeltone, the land of the lost paragraph!

This ban on public smoking will hit the coffin makers initially but I'm sure business will eventually pick up and then you can do as you like in your own confined space! Good to see the music is slowly returning to the Sun Inn. Simon and Terry seem very friendly and accomodating. Saturday night was pretty well quiet so I hope business picks up for them.

As I understand it from our discussion on Sunday it is "Hodgesons" this week, "Monks Walk" Ist Sunday in't month as usual.
I thought the issue over the "Sun" was sorted that Sunday but I have been informed since that there still seems to be a bit of confusion on what is happening. I will not be at "Hodgesons" this week, but maybe one of the regulars will be able to inform you of the situation for the future.

The "Sun" is honouring all previously booked "Punch The Horse" gig's the first is on 4th of March.

Take your point about the inconsistancy of start times Eric. When we first started these sessions many moons ago it was a 2.oopm start for the first sunday and others started at 4.oopm I think it developed over the years into this loose sort of arrangement, so maybe we need to look at start times again.

I have been down to the Sun and talked to the licensees, who are expecting us this coming Sunday. I have told then that we will start as close to 3pm as possible and that the session may run on until closing time - contrary to some rumours, there is no act booked at the Sun in the evening (it is Saturday)so people can stay and play for as long as they like.

Real ales on at the moment are:

Taylor's Landlord, Deuchar's IPA, Black Sheep Bitter, Old Peculier and Abbott's Ale.

Last week my glass was filled with a smile and enthusiasm, and tonight well , i was left somewhat astounded. from what I gather the good cops have flown ,The big fella and his friendly wife really made one feel welcome. On a personal note I hope it is only temporary, what was or is the relationship of the 4 people ?? I think I will again have to test my tastebuds with the monks walk and his somewhat more easy to digest jukebox on a Friday night , I will miss listening in tho. thought I was back in the Sun at last...... Hic ooops beer talking again

The Sun is a good pub but seems jinxed for real music. Tuesday night is a good do in Monks but again occasionally in competition with the junkbox.

I recall a story told by Martin, the Wilsons were at Cleethorpes festival and looking for a pub to sing in, they picked the roughset fishermans pub and parked the biggest one of them on the juke box, no one put money in it!

No problems with background music on a Sunday - there would be a riot as the pub is full of sessioneers and the audience.

This Sunday in the sun is hosted by Mississippi John

It looks like the Sun is moving towards heavy metal but says the folk is welcome and hope the two can co exist. It's not working well some Fridays as Black Sabbath isn't getting the kind of atmosphere that's comfortable at the start of sessions. There have been evenings when a good session gets going and the music is turned down, but there is a clash and the folk isn't winning.

The Sun is the best place for a session and snap decisions are a mistake so we are hanging on with Fridays for the time being. We're going to lend them a moving hearts CD which appeals to heavier tastes but won't clash.

The session needs planty of support. Lets stay lively on a Friday night and persuade them to leave Thin Lizzy on the shelf. Lovers of songs can enjoy the odd stretch of tunes and musicians can enjoy occasional songs and we can get what's most important which is a good folkkey thing on a Friday night in Beverley.

How did the session go last night?
Did Thin Lizzy get left on the shelf?
Do you think the people that go in there do so to listen to the music, I know I did. The landlady ( i think she is the landlady ) was of the opinion people who went in on a Friday did so because they had picked up the reputation of the pub!!! some reputation I say, A meeting of Hells Angels no doubt will lift beer sales and eh the pub
has been saved by these fantastic sellers of ales.
I really do hope the musos win the battle of the bands and I hope it happens soon. If the session went well please post which personnel stood behind the bar. If it went well I assume the blonde "landlady" was in attendance, are the four people some sort of syndicate or just family ?
Chalk and cheese I say.
I will not return out of principle and will drink where I feel wanted which at the minute is at the monks with the delightful taste of the wold top brewery although I do miss Timmy Taylors when I do so

We could do with some posters up advertising the acoustic sessions too

Last Friday's session was good but started late. There was music at the bar but once going it didn't bother us. Only one barstaff there and she didn't know how to operate the cd system which was left on a loop.

We understand there is a holding company looking after the Sun and they have employed managers, but the main lady isn't blonde.

This Friday should be a lively one, Stevie is over from Leeds.

Excellent session last night despite loud unfriendly music from the bar. Nice mix of tunes and songs. Everyone in the pub except one grumpy kid said they'd prefer to hear the session and the worst thing is listening to two things at once.

If background noise gets to you the trick is to come early and sit in the snug away from the door.

Barring a miracle I won't make it to the Monk's today - tore a muscle in my back on Friday and am struggling to stand or sit with any comfort.

I'm in a bad way as I was due to see the rheumatology specialist at Hull Royal about my arthritic hand next Tuesday - the hospital has now cancelled the gig, with no date for a re-booking.

Haven't been for ages sorry to hear you are having problems the answer is to arrange a big session night and play mainly tunes and drown out the juke box. Will drag out some of the Hessle mummys and talented kids and mob the place for you Jo. School holidays are the best time.
The black boy session has gone so well with the punters that the pub is often full.Prior to the session starting Alan usually only had a few regulars in.He has also just decided to take out the juke box.
The man is a hero.

It isn't the juke box. It's a loop of CDs that they deliberately play behind the bar.

I'm under the impression that piped music in pubs is for the benefit of the staff, who might get bored serving drinks and talking to customers. The punters go there to talk to each other, play music or listen to it, and the musak doesn't help any of those. Perhaps they should put the speakers under the bar so only the bar staff can hear them?

Unfortunately Tim has his school play on Friday night, so we won't get to Beverley until Saturday. Where's the best place to meet up with 'catters?

Monk's Walk, the Sun, or the Tiger.

The Tiger is a tune session, the other two will be singing (mainly). They're all quite close to each other so you could easily do all three!
