BS: Do you like this new 'pro' hockey?

Y'all, I am really angry down here in Hockeytown South about this so-called "new" NHL. As some of you know, I love hockey, and especially my Detroit Red Wings. My wife, Kelly, and I were fortunate to be able to see the Wings play the Stars over in Dallas yesterday and I think she's madder than I am. When the game ended in a 1-1 tie, and one five-minute overtime period rendered no goals, they went to a "shoot-out." Kelly looked at me and asked me what-the-hell was going on and I explained the "shoot-out" policy to her. As she said to me - they don't do it in baseball, they don't do it in basketball and they don't do it in football - why do they do it in hockey?

She's right, you know. If the same approach was applied to those other sports, say in baseball - when you got through nine innings and the game was tied you go to a homerun derby; say in basketball - when you get done with four periods and the game is tied you go to a free-throw contest; say in football - when you get done with four quarters
and the game is tied you go to a field goal kicking contest.

I didn't pay money to see a damned shootout, I PAID TO SEE A HOCKEY GAME! LET THEM PLAY HOCKEY. What's wrong with doing five-minute overtime sudden death periods until someone scores. I want to start a write-in protest to get the NHL to change back to playing hockey.
The media tell us that the fans LOVE the shoot-out; well, I AM A FAN,
AND I HATE THE SHOOT-OUT! I also hate it that the Wings only get down here two times a year instead of four - but that's another issue.
What do you think?

Well, ya know I almost hate to say this--but I like the "shoot out." However, I'll concede the points on the other sports-although I'd kinda like to see a field goal contest too. But thats just me.

I think they're trying all this stuff to raise the excitement level for hockey, as it's not real popular--I mean, when was the last time you saw a nationally televised hockey game? So, they get rid of the two line pass, and mess around with where the goalie can and can't clear a puck from, and throw in a shoot out. 'Course I can see why you're so jacked up on this--Stars won 2-1 over the Wings...........in the "shoot out".

Iffen they're gonna have a shoot-out, I suggest a that each have a pair of .45 Colt's Revolvers, single action. Winners take all.

Personally, I don't see the problem with a tie as a result. Split the points and go home; sometimes it's a fair result. Obviously, in the playoffs you have to have a decision, but in the regular season (which is about 274 games too long, by the way) why the desperate desire for a winner and a loser? (Please don't just say "It's the American way!")

Hockey should be a great sport, it has the necessary ingredients to be right up there. Instead it's open thuggery, not an ounce of sportsmanship in it. A non-sport and a complete disgrace.

It's funny isn't it? Any other sport would ban you for life if you repeatedly punched an opponent in the face; in hockey it's applauded. I'd have a hard time explaining it to my child if I ever decided to take her to a game.

Cluin, You probably hit the nail on the head with the gambling. I agree, a tie is an acceptable outcome after sixty minutes of play. It was a part of the game for decades, I believe that is still acceptable in Soccer, the biggest spectator sport in the game. I didn't even mind the five minute Overtime that could still result in a tie. I am totally opposed to the shootout. Hockey is a team game, a shootout is not.

I agree. I dislike the shootout too.

However, I also dislike games going into quadruple overtime. Play suffers and even I get tired just watching it.
