National Freedom Day

The 1st state ratefies 13th Amendment:
Slavery is banned throughout all US territory on 2/1/1865

4.      It was after some weeks' sailing we arrived off Africa's shore,
        And 500 of these poor slaves, my boys, from their native land we bore.
        We made them walk in on a plank and we stowed them down below,
        Scarce eighteen inches to a man was all they had to go.

5.      The plague and fever came on board, swept half of them away;
        We dragged their bodies up on deck and hove them in the sea..
        It was better for the rest of them if they had died before
        Than to work under brutes of planters in Cuba for ever more.

Thanks, Abby for calling our attention to National Freedom Day.

I never heard of it before this post.

Azizi, There are a largish number of National officially declared Days (and weeks and months) that few ever hear about. Most of them are set by law and the president then declares them annually. Many others are traditional but the pres. has discretion as to when or if. Few get any publicity except within the organization sponsoring the thing. This one is between - The President may issue... see Cornel Law School

and thewhitehouse.gov I'm not clear Mr Bush got around to it yet. But the web site is usually late (it's run by FEMA) and the announcement may not get there for a while. Several states, cities, etc. kept it, though.
