A few years back, he came to the Scottish Country Fair (now, alas, a defunct tradition) at Macalester College here in St. Paul, Minnesota, and built a section of dry-stone wall about 10-feet long in one day as a demonstration. (Dry-stone walls are unknown in this part of the country. Most people have never seen one.) It stood for 2 or 3 years after that, but began to deteriorate. Too many students tried to climb on it, I suppose, and "spilled the upper boulders in the sun." Probably no one knew how to repair it properly. Finally, it disappeared, the stones scattered into various landscaping projects, I guess, but I always thought of him when I passed that spot. I like his music, too. I bought a cassette of his songs at that fair, but later someone stole it out of my car. I kept thinking if I ever saw him again, I'd buy another one or two, but I never did. |

Although I'm a bit hazy about the details, now, it was it was, in all other respects, a memorable experience. I'm glad to hear that Dave Goulder is still going strong! |

Not the least about dopey rules. So he went into competition with them, starting his own international hostle system (under the aegis of the Forestry people) and eventually built the system up to a total of one hostle. That's surely where you were. A combination, mountineering/mountain rescue and folksong place where the two would have fine nightly ceilidhs. Auchna- something, near Torridon. Way up. 6 of us went up there, squoze somehow into crazy Angus' 3-wheel motorized scooter. A raging mountain gale when we arrived - couldn't see 10 feet. The Ancient One got blowed into a ditch. But inside was a pleasure. Best was a pig sitting at the top of the Christmas tree, staring into the wind. Auchnasheen? Or maybe that was where his RR Crossing Watch job & the Youth Hostle was. Good website & yes, I'm also pleased he's still going strong. Sadly, the lovely Liz quit singing years ago. But I still sing her versions of Calico Printer's Clerk & Tailor's Breeches. |
