05 Feb 06 - 10:34 AM (#1662125) Subject: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: George Papavgeris The new album (6th overall, 2nd under the Irregular label) is here. Literally, I can see the boxes piled in the bedroom. And soon (20th March) it will be on general release. Titled "For my next trick…", it contains a number of musical departures, not the least of which is my daring to butcher a traditional song. A review by David Kidman can be found here. Most important, you can all now order your tickets for the (one only) launch concert, headlining George Papavgeris and his Los Marbles Monday 3rd April, 7:30pm Travellers Studio Theatre, Harrow Arts Centre Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, Middlesex HA5 4EA "Marbles" for the night will be Vicki Swan (bass & smallpipes), Jonny Dyer (accordion), Saskia Tomkins (fiddle), Chris Green (bouzouki), Jude Rees (shawm & oboe), Jeff Hinds (steel drum) and Dan Waller (lekky guitar). David Kidman will MC and there may well be a little surprise during the interval too… Financial health warning: Please do not order your tickets from the Arts Centre itself – those are for the general public and priced £8. Instead, use this link to order them at £6 only using any credit/debit card (or cheque). The link is not accessible from the main website, it has been put there just for you, and the reduced price is only for Mudcatters and those on my distribution list. Hoping to see you there |

01 Apr 06 - 06:07 AM (#1708085) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: George Papavgeris About 25 of the expensive ones through the Arts Centre and 8-9 of the discounted ones through me (but I have a couple of people on a promise, so the latter number might be 4-5). |
01 Apr 06 - 06:16 AM (#1708089) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: George Papavgeris As the theatre is a 100-seater, we are looking at a pretty full room for the night. I confirmed the bar opening at 6:30 or 6:45pm; the music for the interval is on CD to take along (some surprises there too - but saying no more); and I'm practicing furiously to get up to the level of Vicki and Jonny (who have been practicing for a month now and are amazing); Saskia needs no practice other than a run-through on the day anyway; Dan is running through Anytown downstairs as I write this - he is ready, but it will be his first public appearance so he wants to be note-perfect (and he is already); I am sure Terry will be his usual dazzler on the whistles, and Fleggy has run through Anytown several times with me at the club (and Angelo twice too). Chris & Jude I expect will be on form anyway, and Jeff will want to show off in front of his fiancee. It will be a cracker, if only we can fit 10 of us on the stage for the closing numbers! |
01 Apr 06 - 08:18 AM (#1708132) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: Micca George, I will try and make it, If I do, can I get a ticket at the door? for complex work related reasons I wont know until the day if I can get there, But if I can not, all the best with the Launch |

01 Apr 06 - 12:43 PM (#1708254) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: George Papavgeris Thank you for the advice Breezy! But I rather fancy seventy-one trombones for the closing extravaganza. |
02 Apr 06 - 04:21 AM (#1708663) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: breezy Just passing it on. Watch out for ticket touts, Wembley not yet ready How about a revolving stage for the finish? I hate trombones now a saxaphone would be apropriated you know its all downhill after Monday and he aint got many CDs left because he sold em all the Folk on the Moor last Sunday |

03 Apr 06 - 05:45 AM (#1709357) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: breezy ah ,an example of premature anticipation. Its been an interesting journey from the Blue Bell in March 2001. I cant agree with the revueist in Unicorn. This is not a departure, but a musical continuum. All the best for tonight. Congratulations George, boy doing good. |

03 Apr 06 - 06:06 PM (#1709722) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: Herga Kitty Well done George! In fact, well done everybody - especially those who played for more songs tonight, and on different instruments than they did on the recording. Vicki was marvellous (but George, I think you might be right in thinking that you're not really an ideal Mary Humphreys substitute...). Good luck for tomorrow's interview and your trip down under. Kitty |

Best wishes for the day and for your tour to Australia, maybe see you sometime in the future in St Albans where you've been such a tremendous stalwart of our club since 2001. |
04 Apr 06 - 04:18 AM (#1710008) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: Moses Lovely evening George Great to hear so many talented performers all on one small stage! Good luck with the interview today and have a wonderful time in Oz. Vanessa has already promised to say hello to Freda, Sandra, Margaret, John etc. Give em all a BIG hug from me please. Christine |
04 Apr 06 - 04:36 AM (#1710020) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: George Papavgeris Knackered, face hurting from permanent smile, elated. Last night was a dream, Los Marbles' collective talents were one hell of a platform for "doing my own thing". They were brilliant, one and all, and although Vicki (kitchenpiper) stood out clearly as the heroine of the event, everyone had their moment of glory, their special contribution; and it felt like a "team". And 6 of the 9 on stage were Mudcatters! Back home and a large whiskey later, doing the "post mortem" with David, Vanessa, Dan and Aliki, I could find no flaws that were not mine. I was also touched by the presence of several individuals in the audience - though I will mention only two here: Mary O'Connor, Herga's revered source singer who has passed songs to the likes of Carthy and Coe; and Martyn "the voice" and Dan W-R, broken rib and all had just hopped over from France early for the concert. I hadn't been too happy with the first half (the sound balance wasn't settled, Saskia's fiddle seemed to be on mute); but the second half flowed like water for me. When the page with the acknowledgements came up on my list I thought "surely not - have I missed some song?". Off to Winchester for a dayjob interview this pm - this could end up as a watershed time for me; so, just in case - "Remember me like this"... Thank you all for your wishes and your kind comments! |

04 Apr 06 - 10:28 AM (#1710167) Subject: RE: Album Launch: El Greko & his Los Marbles From: MoorleyMan Just arrived back home, with songs and images from last night's so-memorable concert still resounding. I felt seriously privileged to be there, a very humble small part of the occasion. Thanks for everything George, what an achievement! Every one of the Marbles did a fabulous job, but extra-special credit must go to Vicki for depping for Miranda with such style, she was tremendous. Actually George, I suppose technically you could say that no post mortem was necessary, since nothing and nobody died - it was one of the most life-affirming gigs I've attended, sharing that very quality with your songs and you as songwriter. You're a star! |
