BS: An apple makes my teeth hurt????

Subject: BS: An apple makes my teeth hurt????
From: Little Hawk

This is an odd thing. I ate a nice fresh Granny Smith apple yesterday, and right away all my teeth started to ache. Not the kind of sharp deep ache like a real toothache, which comes from inside, but a more superficial aching all over the outside of them. They continued feeling that way for the rest of the evening, and they still feel slightly uncomfortable today.

Why would I get such a reaction from eating one apple? I've eaten thousands of apples in the past however many years, and usually I don't get such a reaction. I can only assume it was very acidic, and the acid reacted with my teeth somehow, but why would it?

Anyone else experienced this?

Yes! I believe that I am sensitive to something, perhaps insecticide or preservative, on the apple skin. I don't have a problem when I eat skinned slices of apples, or any kind of cooked apples, only when I bite into a whole apple.

You could take your teeth out before eating one. How you go about it after you remove your choppers isn't my problem. Heck, I just suggest solutions.

Seriously, I'd suspect either abnormal malic acid content and/or something on the skin.

Did you wash it before eating? You really should you know, even the so-called "organic" ones.

Hmmm. Perhaps. This was supposedly an "organic" apple, therefore without pesticides or anything like that. Could Zehrs be lying (gasp!). I shall try peeling the next apple, eat it, and see what happens.

"Prevention: It is best to avoid causes of dentinal hypersensitivity. Acidic food and drinks can damage tooth enamel. From most acidic to least, some of the foods and drinks to use cautiously include ginger ale, limes/lemons and their juices, wine, cranberry sauce, coffee, vinegar, pickles, cola and citrus-based drinks, apples, rhubarb, raspberries, root beer, relish, strawberries, fruit jams/jellies, peaches, sauerkraut, blueberries, pineapples/pineapple juice, cherries and grapes. It is especially important not to brush right after ingesting these foods, because they strip away the tooth's protective layer, and you will be brushing naked enamel, which is more prone to damage."

Above is from a google search. I have very senstivie teeth too.
Mangos are not mentioned LH so your good to go and maybe you have been saying Hillary too much!! Perhaps a changing your word for a while may help!
I use Tea Tree Toothpaste. It helps a lot.

Yeah, right. Thanks for nothing, Rap! ;-) I think you are approaching the problem the wrong way around on this one.

Did the apple come straight from the refrigerator? This may be a problem of temperature-sensitive teeth.

Try putting the apple on the kitchen counter for an hour ahead of time.

It could be a case of root sensitivy caused by receeding gums which in turn is caused by ageing. There is no cure for ageing but there are tooth pastes which contain potassium nitrate which is supposed to block the conducting tubules which are exposed on the root. Get a professional opinion from jimmyt.

Little Hawk:

1) perhaps it was actually the 13 ball from a billiards table and not an apple at all.

2) if not that, I suggest the MOST likely possibility is that you have some sinus congestion and this pressure and pH change created a pain that was in all your upper teeth but was actually a sinus pain mimicing a tooth one. Most people would say ALL their teeth when in actuality it was only all the upper ones, (most closely related to the sinuses) If this is the case, try it again in a few days and I suppose you will have returned to your Pome fruit valhalla. If not, take 2 aspirin with a glass of Reisling, and call me in the morning.   jimmyt (compassionate conservative and lover of all things Canadian.)

No, the lower teeth were definitely hurting as well. Very noticeably.

I am going to experiment now, peel the remaining apple, eat it and see what happens.

Hate to be the one to tell you this, Little Hawk, but you've obviously been exposed to the dreaded Granola Virus. There's been a recent outbreak in Bumfuckistan, Canada's primary source of Granny Smith apples. Tooth pain is merely the initial symptom. It will be followed in a couple of days by.... Well, you're probably better off not knowing what happens in the second stage. Just be sure to have plenty of ice cubes handy. Packing it in ice greatly increases the likelihood that the doctor can sew it back on successfully.

Well, well. Very interesting. A peeled apple does not make my teeth sore. Evidently these "Organic" apples from Zehrs have something on the outer skin that irritates my teeth. I wonder just what that something is? They are kind of waxy feeling, so I assume that they have been waxed to keep them fresh longer.

"Apples are coated with shellac and carnauba wax to improve their shine because consumers prefer to buy shiny apples.

This seems dumb, but it's true!

These coatings are not harmful, but you should always rinse your apples with soap and water or with vinegar before you eat them."

I don't like Granny Smiths myself. Too hard and sour. One bite, and this is what they do to me.

Granny Smiths make great apple juice, but for eating raw delicious, royal gala, macs are much better imo. I find apples easier on my dentition if I slice them first. Then I dip the slices in peanut butter for added nutrition. But I do leave the peel on -- it's the most nutritious part of the apple I've heard.    (I wash 'em carefully, of course).

There's a lot of good ideas there, Little Hawke. Sounds like acid from the very sour apple biting into the exposed roots, caused by gum recession. An ageing process which can occur at any age! And can be made worse by using your tooth brush as a saw. You have to keep on using the densitising tooth pastes: it goes away all right but then returns. How can you eat dreadful things like Granny Smiths! Try Royal Galas or Golden Delicious.
Good luck!

I regard "delicious" apples as insipidly oversweet, bland, unnatural, and lifeless. They are the kind of apple that Walt Disney or Howdy Doody would have invented, had they had the ability. McIntoshes, though, I like.

Any problems with acid reflux? Left untreated over a long enough time, the acids which come back up (reflux) into the mouth can slowly eat away enamel and also make any exposed roots overly sensitive, especially to things that have a high acidic content.

Or....any problems with bruxing? Even a few minutes of grinding your teeth while sleeping can also result in increased sensitivity for some time afterwards.
