BS: Help: DVD pauses on its own

I just bought a DVD, and halfway through it, it starts to pause to a still for a few econds, then retstarts on its own. it keeps doing this, and then starts to skip over a few minutes. Playing it a second time, it does the same thing. other CDVds work fine. Anyone know what causes this, and if there's anything I can do short of returning the DVD? It's called "Unforgivable Blackness; The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson." Anyone else own this and have similar problems? Thanks.

Hi, Chanteyranger - usually, the problem is caused by the DVD switching layers. Some DVD players don't handle the switch easily. Try it in a computer or another DVD player, and see it it still has the problem. It it has the same problem in another player, then it should be fair to ask the vendor to exchange the DVD.
The Jack Johnson show was a good one, so you don't want to miss it.

Sometimes I've found a DVDs play up just because I've left a fingerprint on the surface while putting it in the machine. Maybe a wipe might sort things.

As McGrath says. Clean it. It's a common problem with rented DVDs.

Thanks for the info! Before I try cleaning it, I should ask whether would it be with just a damp cloth, or are there any recommended cleaners designed for DVDs?

I give it a light once-over with a little light soapy water then dry it on a clean dish towel. You're not supposed to go around the disk in circles but dry across it. I usually just pat it dry without moving across it too much. This works very well, but be sure you don't leave soap or a film on the disk.

You can buy 'disk clinic' machines that polish the surface with a series of rotating cloth covered discs. These work with a cleaning spray and are great at polishing out fingerprints and small scratches. Be careful how often you spray it though, and what with....

"don't leave soap or a film on the disk."

... or lots of lint from the cloth...
